NCAA Basketball 2022-2023 Catch-all

Lots of action last night/yesterday. #16 UVA was killing #5 Baylor, though Baylor came back towards the latter part of the 2nd half. Still lost. Then #19 Illinois took down #8 UCLA, which sets up a Illinois v UVA tomorrow (11/20/2022)

Indiana hung on against a scrappy Xavier.

Duke was in a fight with Delaware early, but pretty much destroyed them in the 2nd.

Notre Dame and VT eked out wins over their opponents.

And FSU... I don't even know what the heck to say. They were up 17 on Florida at the half... and then the wheels came off. Yeesh. 0-4 start for the Seminoles.

Clemson handled the Bellarmine team by 10 that beat Louisville by 1. Ugh.

UNC looked better in the first half today, came out in the 2nd and let James Madison close the gap somewhat, but eventually took care of business. Miami got pummeled by Maryland, and it looked like Wake was mostly handling Loyola.

UVA and Illinois are in a low scoring battle. More of that grind-it-out, slow-tempo, make-you-work-for-EVERY-SHOT gamestyle that Tony Bennett's UVA teams love to bring. They've got some shooters this year, looks like. More than just Gardner. Could be an annoying matchup again.

I say this and they go to OT.

On the women's side #1 SC vs #2 Stanford is happening now. Cardinal up late.

And #7 Louisville is playing #3 Texas in the Bahamas at 730 tonight

Good job Loyola Marymount!

And today is loaded. Top 10 Baylor UCLA matchup right now and Kentucky v Gonzaga at 730!

Better than NFL Dallas blowout right now. College Hoops is back

CofC wins the Charleston Classic!

Beating an undefeated Va Tech for the trophy after beating an undefeated Colorado St and Davidson in the earlier rounds.

Cougs only loss was to UNC in a game where they led for the first 30 minutes.

Oh and they just signed their best recruiting class ever (43 in the 247 composite.)

Gonzaga wins easy. I still hate Timme but happy to see Kentucky lose.

Cards women beat #3 Texas by 9!

Ohio took Michigan to overtime on a wacky pass that ricocheted off the backboard with 2.1 seconds.

#3 Houston on the road at Oregon starting now!

Well sh*t. That went as expected. Arkansas wore us down and blew it open with about 10 minutes left.

Cards look bad. Real bad.

Yay. We finally won a game

I tuned in early in the 2nd. Saw them close it to 5, then all of a sudden they were down 13. Arkansas looked pretty capable. Tough draw.

SDSU downs Ohio State 88-77.

Cal is off to its worst start in program history (0-5) and other than Kansas State, all losses have been to middling schools in non-major (or downright minor?) conferences. 4 of the 5 losses have been at home, and 3 of those teams have had to travel 1000s of miles to play Cal (Kansas State, Southern, Texas State).

The program is in total shambles. Any respectable team would have fired its coach by now, but here we are. It is an unmitigated disaster, everyone knows it, but our hamstrung athletics department can't or won't do anything about it.

Dude Louisville is getting embarrassed 54-20 halfway through the second half right now.

And we already hired our new coach that was supposed to get things right.

Haha

So I don’t think that that Louisville and San Diego final is gonna happen this year.
Ouch!

You're also just now coming out from underneath that cloud of NCAA investigatory whatever... Maybe things will get better on the recruiting trail from here.

Who is going to come play for a coach that can't win 3 games and gets embarrassed by any other power team?

Cincinnati did look bad today too. I guess there's a chance of a close game tomorrow. But I doubt we win

The rest of our schedule has 2 wins tops unless they dramatically improve

I dunno... It's kind of a chicken and egg problem. Not trying to be flip about it. Losing seasons are freaking painful.

Plenty of room here in the deep end of the pool for you Stele. Its a race to see who gets our first win!

Our next 5 are

@TCU (are they good at basketball too? heck if Sonny Dykes was coaching their basketball team, they'd probably still beat Cal)
@U$C
Arizona
Eastern Washington
Butler
@Santa Clara
TX-Arlington

we're definitely staring at 0-8 before another series of non-conference games.

Maybe y'all should have hired Jason Kidd before the Mavs did hehe.

Cincinnati looked not good yesterday. Maybe today will be interesting. If not...
Maryland
Miami
FSU (maybe?)
W KY
Florida A&M

0-10 feels likely then FAM feel good game. Belmont then Kentucky and nothing else that I would predict as a win right now after that.

Your road definitely looks harder than ours, but the fact that we're staring at 0-10 with a bunch of scrub teams (other than Arizona and U$C) is pathetic...

As far as coaching.. Jason Kidd for sure is the fun "what if" pick, but a much better, realistic, and much more exciting choice is former Florida State assistant, now current 5-0 Missouri coach, and most importantly 4-year Cal starting guard Dennis Gates as head coach. They haven't beaten anyone either but at least they're 5-0 not 0-5 against the same lackluster schedule.

Cards 0-6. Your move, Bears.

Tennessee looked bad against Butler in the Bahamas last night, but ended up winning by 26ish. Don't know what that means. USC today.

If only they drew Alaska to scale this would be even more impressive for Cal.

Fairfield barely has enough room for their logo.

From kenpom:

171 Louisville ACC 0-6
210 California P12 0-5
235 Fairfield MAAC 0-4
264 Northeastern CAA 0-4
286 Monmouth CAA 0-5
303 Jackson St. SWAC 0-4
337 Alabama A&M SWAC 0-5
340 Central Connecticut NEC 0-6

UNC survives against a Portland team that was apparently hitting around 70% from the floor at one point? Yuck. My prediction still stands, play like that against Iowa St and we'll record our first loss

Down goes #1. I guess Tyrian will have more.

I was busy watching UNC lose a football game at the same time.

...

Sigh.

I mean, why is Bacot directing traffic on the offensive end? Good lord. Those 3 turnovers just sealed our fate. That plus an absolute baller performance from Caleb Grill. Good God. 29 points, and pretty much from anywhere he wanted.

Ah well, better to lose now and try to figure out what's missing. They haven't been dealing with the pressure well at all.

I knew that was going on too, because my dad and brother were love texting it. Baaaaad day for the tarheels.

And down goes #3 Kansas, breaking a 17 game win streak. Tennessee beat them 64-50 in a street fight of a game in the Bahamas to win the tourney down there. Kansas never led.

Not the prettiest of games, but seems UT learned at least something from that horrible loss to Colorado a couple of weeks ago.
