Playstation 5 Catch-All

Dipped into Metro Exodus on PS+ Extra. I'd initially ignored it as "just another shooter", and one that launched on PS4 initially...but I'm having a good time with it!

Silky smooth, gorgeous graphics. The lighting on PS5 is exceptional. I was immediately impressed by how soft the shadows looked. There are also a few moments where enemy's have flashlights that are quite blinding, it makes great use of dark spaces.

4k, 60FPS, ray tracing. Not an expert with these things so just have a look here.

It suffers from a few of the blockbuster FPS problems in that there's a lot of exposition and hallways/shooting galleries, but it's a great game to try if you're subscribed to the service. I may not finish it, but I'm glad I gave it a try.

Is there a wall mount or something for these? I don’t like having consoles out in the open. My PS4 Pro is attached to the back of my TV with a vesa mount but I don’t think the PS5 will fit.

Yes there are a ton of wall mounts available. Varying price points.

I went with this one

Playstation Direct has the digital edition of the PS5 with God of War for $460 right now if anyone is looking.

They also have the GOW disc edition for $560.

Ironically, you still don't get a disc for the disc edition.

In honor of real tree.....

If I buy The Last of Us II for PS4 on disc and put it in my PS5, will it work?

Forgive my PS5 noob-ness.

Yes

And it's a free upgrade to the PS5 version.

As long as you have the disc-version PS5 obviously.

Although I think the PSN store is matching all the direct sale prices this morning.

So for instance you can buy Horizon: FW digital for $30 PS4 version and get the PS5 upgrade free. Same with GoW 2018, Nioh 2, and a bunch of others.

Notably not true with a couple of games. But for the most part buy PS4 and get PS5 free was a thing.

Thanks. Followup - will it do any upscaling or the like, or will it be just like playing the PS4 version with a PS5 controller?

Edit: Thanks for the explanation.

You'll have to specifically install the PS5 version.

So if you have disc PS4 game, you have to keep the disc in to play the PS5 digital version that you install. If digital, you just select the PS5 one and never install the PS4 one.

Is there a PS4 Pro mode on the PS5 for PS4 titles that support it?

PS5 will automatically play PS4 games as if it was a PS4 Pro, rather than a PS4 base. A handful of PS4 games were patched to play even better on the PS5 than they did on the PS4 Pro (God Of War 2018 among them), but not as well as if they were native PS5 games.

Pretty sure it is. Think that's how I finally played Left Behind on TLOU.

I would like to be corrected if I'm wrong, but I think there isn't a PS4 Pro "mode"?... either the game is coded to take advantage of extra resources or not.

I can say with certainty that some PS4 games perform better on a PS5. (Yes, the PS4 version.) It was a big thing how Control was almost unplayable from low frame rate when first shipped, but was much improved on a PS5.

Yes, that's right. The game just acts as if you have a PS4 Pro. Which is why it's good to double check online for each individual game because sometimes it's a case where the framerate in the "Quality" mode is unlocked so it runs just as well as "Performance" mode on PS5 but nothing in the game indicates that.

Somehow, impossibly, I saw a man purchase a PS5 retail for the first time in my life on Monday.

I've wanted to buy a PS5 or whatever the new XBox is for a while now, but I also didn't want to do any more work than "walk into store, point at console, buy console, walk out" so it's quite nice to see that I may finally be able to purchase one like the lazy American I am.

New State of Play arrives Thursday, featuring Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

State of Play returns with its first show of 2023! Get ready for new looks at some anticipated games from our third-party partners, as well as a first glimpse at five PlayStation VR2 games set to arrive later this year. Then, settle in for more than 15 minutes of all-new gameplay details and updates on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the next game from Rocksteady Studios.

It all begins this Thursday at 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern / 9pm GMT / 10pm CET on Twitch and YouTube.

Oh nice. I’m willing Suicide Squad to be good.

Question about VR.

I'm not that interested in VR games. They usually look a bit lame to me with the floating hands and gimmicky/forced game play mechanics. So VR isn't really for me.

But I do like the idea of playing eg. FPS games (eg. Battlefield) and using the headset as a monitor but have the controller do alle the moving around/game inputs. Basically to get more immersed in the game.

Does it work in that context? And is it worth it?

You mean use a VR headset to play a game flatscreen style? That will be worse than playing on your monitor/TV; VR lenses are round, so to fit all of the rectangular image onto the lens you use about half of the lens. It would be the same as playing on a HD monitor in a darkened room.

People seem to be excited about the fact that they can play flatscreen games on the PSVR 2, although Sony's stated the resolution will be no greater than 1080p (on the up side, the internal rendering will be the full PS5 resolution, so you'll get anti-aliasing from the downsampling to the 1080p image). If you have a 4K OLED, though, it will be worse than watching on your TV.

Was hoping theater mode would be cool. Might have to cancel my preorder.

I bought the nreal air AR glasses and they do what you describe and do it very well.

Watch a few videos on youtube about them like this one https://youtu.be/Oq-n9WJBI0Q

Personally I love them. They work with the PS5, Switch, Steam Deck, etc.

I'm eager for a Playstation Showcase in the next few months (there has to be) but I'll take anything from Playstation at that minute. I'm really hoping Rocksteady can hit a level of quality of the Arkham trilogy with Justice League but the live service part has me worried. Still I'll remain hopeful until proven otherwise.

Yeah looking forward to tomorrow's State of Play but I'm very eager to see a full Playstation Showcase with Sony's first party studios on display at some point this year.

It sounds like Jeff Grubb has heard there is a showcase planned for sometime just before E3. Which makes sense.

Ok. Here we go

VR games just leave me bored. Probably something you have to experience

Having tried VR once. I can see how several of those games would be very impressive in VR. When enemies are as big as you they don’t need a lot of detail to be an intimidating presence. I wouldn’t go near a driving game in VR for a long, long time. I did a four lap race in VR and was ‘travel sick’ for three or so hours afterwards.

Next months PS Plus games include Ghost Wire Tokyo, Battlefield 2042 and Tchia. I’d like to try the first and have toyed with buying the other two.

I’m still onboard for Suicide Squad despite it being live servicy in the extreme. I really like the spirit in the game. I’ll need to see reasonable reviews of course.

Several games I am interested in but nothing that has blown me away.

I am a bit disappointed in Suicide Squad. It felt like an arena shooter. when they kept saying it was in the universe of the Arkham games I hoped it was a bit more like those games in gameplay not just name.
