Kind of nice that trump's announcement that he will run again isn't a big issue. It isn't the headline on any new site I go to, didn't get mention here.

I wonder if that will be the way it goes. He constantly tries to capture that lightening in a bottle with grand reveals but never makes much interest.

Yeah that announcement got buried very hard. Mostly bad timing with the whole Poland missile crisis. Trump didn't even make front page reddit for me. While reddit conservative were hugely negative in the comments.

The only news I saw about it was the clip where he said anyone dealing drugs should get the death penalty. And his cult applauded.

Of course that's wink wink black people dealing drugs. Not his son being on cocaine all the time.

Best case scenario is that Trump loses a bruising and highly damaging Primary to DeSantis and then, out of pure spite and bloodymindedness, runs as an independent. That'll split the right-wing vote and guarantee a landslide Democrat victory.

I would *almost* be moved to send Trump a campaign contribution to make that happen.

Trump's getting a slightly different treatment from Rupert Murdoch this time around...

There was also a nice bit in Axios this morning about how Stephen Schwarzman, a GOP megadonor who dropped millions on Trump in 2020, said he's not giving Trump a dime this time around (at least in the primary). Schwarzman is the 2nd GOP big money donor to swear off of Trump.

It would have been easier to impeach him either the first or second time.
The GOP definitely would have faired better in the midterms if they had impeached him...

Not that I expect this much, but it would be lovely to see at least some of that typical Republican violence and intimidation directed at one another instead of toward vulnerable populations and folks sincerely trying to make the nation and the world a better place.

Best I can do for you is occasionally directing it toward folks paying insincere lip service to making the nation and world a better place.

Man remember how Trump running in 2016 was such a joke

I'm just sick of him, to be honest. All his destructive behaviors and policies aside, I just want him to GTFO.

Yup.

Every time someone starts with "think of all the good that he did", I know I am listening to someone with which I will be unable to find any common ground. We disagree fundamentally on the very concept of citizenship, governance, and human decency. This is a person I could not count on to make even the most obvious of moral decisions.

Luckily, I am pretty confident that you(and I) aren't the only ones to feel this way. I hope that this goes badly for him.

Facebook to Fact-Checkers: Remember, Trump Is Off Limits Again

Meta’s own policies around fact-checking political candidates may be pigeonholing them into hosting a groundswell of new, immaculate Donald Trump-authored ravings.

The former president officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on Tuesday evening in front of a rowdy crowd at his Mar-a-Lago estate. That single act of formally declaring his re-election bid triggers Meta policies preventing the company’s third party fact-checkers from intervening on politicians’ posts. And even though Trump himself remains banned on most major platforms, the fact-checking ban still applies to content crafted by him that’s then shared by others on the platform, according to a company wide memo obtained by CNN.

WTF? Politicians are the people who most need fact-checking!

Whomever came up with the mental wrangling that is fact checking only applies to people who tell the truth...

There's and Onion headline for ya!
"The arduous task of fact checking the truth"

I don't know why we need to protect Bill's marriage but it is progress I guess

Senate clears key step to protect same-sex marriage with bill

Because a not insignificant number of people want to deny Bill of that right. Including what seems to be a majority of SCOTUS

So it will get ruled unconstitutional by that same SCOTUS unless we add some more judges right?

They really should switch to white robes.

I expect Trump will spend the next two years going from one public meltdown to another, like a spoiled toddler desperately trying to maintain the focus on him. Fine. That's Trump. Nothing new here.

But what's going to be quite something to witness is all the formerly boot-licking Republicans criticizing Trump and shouting he's "gone too far" as if they didn't conveniently ignore, if not openly praise, the exact same things from 2016-2020. The lack of self-awareness will be astronomical, from the politicians and media elite all the way down to average R voters.

As for Trump vs. DeSantis, I think one of the main lessons DeSantis has learned over the past few years is that Republicans, and a large chunk of independents, love what they'd call a "strong leader" but might more accurately be called a "bully". DeSantis is biding his time, focusing on the libs to establish his conservative bona fides. But when the time comes, he will assert his dominance and punch the other bully in the face with a devastating series of scathing attacks. I expect it will quickly and decisively neuter Trump's political career once and for all and a new king will be enthusiastically crowned. Unfortunately, I don't anticipate a long and bruising primary in 2024.

Moms for Liberty-backed school board members fire superintendent, ban critical race theory

NBC News wrote:

On Tuesday evening, the Berkeley County School District in South Carolina swore in the board members who were elected last week, six of whom were endorsed by the conservative activist group Moms for Liberty.

Within two hours, the school board had voted to fire the district’s first Black superintendent, terminate the district’s lawyer, ban critical race theory and set up a committee to decide whether certain books and materials should be banned from schools.

In addition, the board voted to replace the chair with Mac McQuillin, a local attorney and one of the board members backed by Moms for Liberty.

...

Early in the meeting, according to video posted by the district, the board moved into executive session. Shortly after it returned, Kathy Littleton, one of the Moms for Liberty-backed members, moved to terminate Tiffany Richardson, the district’s in-house counsel, and retain Brandon Gaskins, a lawyer who was deputy chief legal counsel for former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.

Moments later, McQuillin moved to terminate Deon Jackson, who was appointed superintendent last year, and replace him with Anthony Dixon, who had worked in the district as an administrator. Dixon will be the district’s second Black superintendent, after Jackson.

Audience members gasped at the firing of Jackson and Richardson and shouted in disagreement.

“All right, listen up,” McQuillin chastised the audience. “We’re going to be respectful in this meeting. You may not agree with our votes, but I ask that you please be respectful and calm. What kind of example are you setting for our kids, disrupting a meeting like this?”

Love the "we just executed a coup, but y'all better be nice to us because of 'won't somebody think about the children?'" energy.

Leopards something something something

"Stop yelling about your face being eaten, it's upsetting the kids!"

Moms for Liberty are the worst.
Love how "liberty" stands for banning discussion of institutional racism.

Nancy Pelosi To Step Down As House Democratic Leader

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Thursday that she will step down from leadership, a seismic change for Democrats that ends her historic 20-year run atop the caucus and clears the path ahead for a new generation of leaders to take the helm.

“I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress,” she told her colleagues.

Appropriate timing. She gave a good speech that was warmly received. Let's get some youthful (under 60) leadership in there.

According to Geoffrey Skelley at 538, "New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries appears a likely choice to succeed Pelosi". And according to Wikipedia, "Hakeem Sekou Jeffries is an American politician and attorney who has served as the U.S. representative for New York's 8th congressional district since 2013". His birthday is August 4, 1970 (age 52).

So there you go.

Well, he's got the right complexion and first name to trigger a whole new round of sentences that start with "now I'm not racist but" and kvetching about birth certificates despite being born in Brooklyn NY, and call it the leftist version of "owning the libs," but I'm all about that.
