A bit more than I'd hoped. But I'm curious
I was hoping they would hit $499, but I'm not surprised by the price. It's still very cheap compared compared to similarly powered hardware on the PC side.
I am underwhelmed by the 11 new games announced for launch, so I'm hoping that there are at least a few more reveals in store for that, or at least some other good stuff within the launch window.
I am definitely going to attempt to at least pre-order on the 15th for now. I'm sure they're going to be tough to get for a while.
I'm also surprised by the lack of a Half Life: Alyx announcement. I thought that would come hand-in-hand with the release date and price reveals.

As was I - many of the games looked pretty janky, with pretty clumsy animations and terrible writing, and most of them looked like they could run perfectly well on the current PSVR. On the other hand, the shooters mostly looked competent; on the other other hand, I don't like shooters.
However, the June State Of Play had previously revealed a number of AAA PSVR2 games -
- Resident Evil 4 Remake will have "PSVR2 Supported Content"
- RE8 will get a full PSVR2 version (and I believe it's free for anyone who already has RE8)
- The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Chapter 2 - Retribution
- No Man's Sky will of course get a full PSVR2 update
- Horizon: Call of the Mountain (also of course)
All of those have me quite interested, and while I'm not a betting man, I'd be pretty tempted to lay down money that there will be an announcement of both Half Life: Alyx and an Astro-Bots game within a month of launch when they really roll out the hype.
Last week, I actually cleared space under my TV for a PSVR2 set-up. (Thank you for your years of service, Yamaha surround sound system.) But I'm wondering now whether I'll buy one.
I agree with you, Evan E, that the slate of launch titles look distinctly uninspiring. Five fairly generic shooters, plus one stabber/slasher (is that a genre?). And a handful of curios, including a borderline distasteful child kidnap 'thriller'. The only one that stood out to me as a potentially fun and uniquely-VR experience was 'Tentacular'... and I'm not prepared to shell out 600 notes for that!
I have to disagree though that some of the games looked "janky", Evan E. 'Cities VR' and 'After the Fall' looked sh*t! And there wasn't any actual gameplay video at all from two games!
The fact that PSVR2 won't be backwards compatible (putting out of reach games like Moss) means that I'm now leaning towards not buying PSVR2 at all.
I received an invite to pre-order the PSVR 2 from Sony. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the base setup (so no Call of the Mountain included) as well as the charging station. Man, that price....but I'd rather it be quality than not.
I am tempted. Really tempted but that cost is just too high.

I was hoping to find one, but I got nada. These sign up events from Sony never pop for me. It's quite annoying.

They don't usually for me either. This was the exception--for whatever reason.

I received a preorder invitation email today, but I’m just getting settled after a U.S.-to-UK move for work and also have to fund a flight back home for the holidays. Dyni, I don’t know if it will work or not, but if you PM me your email address, I will forward my invitation to you.

I appreciate the offer, Vypre. I suspect it won't be that simple, but I'm happy to try if you're sure you wouldn't like the invite yourself. I'll PM you.
As far as I know, the link in the invite is customized to the PSN account used to request the invite, so they can't be shared.
But, you know...if someone got an invite and isn't going to order one, I'm totally okay with you ordering one and shipping it to me. I signed up for the invite the first day you could, and have been re-signing up with increasing frequency in the last week, but got bupkus. Apparently I squandered all my Sony luck when I got a PS5 on launch day.
Sony, I want to give you my money!

It'll be at retailers as well. It's an open question whether they'll be able to match demand for them on day 1.
Yeah that's the way they did the direct things for PS5 systems, tied to PSN name.
Looks like I got one, and it says you have until Nov 18 morning to order. Don't think my wife is going to go for that much money though.

This is what I was expecting, but it seems to have worked for me.
My bank contacted me this morning about it being potential fraud. Once I had them clear that charge, they had me try the preorder again, and I received the order confirmation right away. So if anyone else here gets an invite they don't plan to use, it's worth the attempt to share.
Glad it worked for you, Dyni!

Wow, that's good to know! Thanks!
Apparently Sony knows and doesnt mind that I passed my pre-order invitation to someone else as I have received another. First interested party to respond to the thread gets it. Sorry - no Coffee Grinders; I want to make sure it is passed to a legit Goojer and not some bot and/or scalper.
Edit: I just noticed a note at the bottom of the email that says the offer is exclusive to me, but I have checked the invitation I forwarded to Dyni and confirmed it did too. So, be aware that it may or may not work this time around.
You don't need an invite anymore - I placed an order just today, and I've never received an invitation (although I've filled out the form requesting one multiple times). You do need to log in on the PS Direct site - prior to logging in, the PSVR2-only and the PSVR2/Horizon bundle will be listed as Out Of Stock. Once you log in, that notice will change to an Add To Cart button.
This month's Edge magazine contains an article on PSVR 2. It's balanced and well-sourced.
My takeaway is that there is neither enough compelling content at launch, nor enough support from major developers post-launch to justify the £500+ price tag. And Horizon: Call of the Mountain is still the only announced game from a Sony-owned developer.
At best, PSVR2 is looking like a Year Two purchase for me. But I'm also considering giving it the PS Vita treatment, and waiting to pick one up after Sony announces that it is discontinuing it and the price drops substantially.
Interestingly, among other things, the article notes that Half Life Alyx remains the best VR game on the market.
Teardown videos for the PSVR2 and controllers from Sony:
I decided to cancel my preorder for now. As a Quest 2 owner, I need a few more titles that I can't play there before I can justify this purchase.
Capcom also posted a trailer for the PSVR2 version of RE8. It looks really good:
They are doing so much more with VR specific mechanics in this than they did with RE7 VR.
Yeah, well it doesn't take much to use more VR mechanics than they did with RE7. Also looks like I'll be playing my second RE title sometime in the future.
It has begun! Got the notification my PSVR2 preorder shipment went out this evening.

Mine said it shipped on Friday, but that it is on-track to be delivered tomorrow.
Mine's at a UPS sorting center about five miles from my house - it's virtually here!
Thank you, folks, you've been great; don't forget to tip your waitresses.
RE4 Remake VR has started development, will be released as free DLC for PSVR
Considering how good the VR version of Village looks, this has me considering skipping out on playing through RE4 Remake at launch and waiting for the VR version.
Here's some extended gameplay of Village:
*grumbles* Now it looks like I might end up playing three Resident Evil games in my lifetime...
*grumbles* Now it looks like I might end up playing three Resident Evil games in my lifetime...
Pretty sure RE4 on Wii is the only one I've ever bought and completed. Played some early 00s ones with roommates back when but never bought myself.
Mine arrived, now for those kids to head to bed!
I did have an opportunity to try out Horizon a few months back and the visual fidelity was absolutely incredible. I'm not sure the gameplay was entirely my cup of tea but the spectacle of it was certainly worthwhile, will be fun to experience the whole game. Can't wait to check out Gran Turismo tonight as well.
Played for awhile last night and it's pretty incredible... when it works. There's clearly some software/firmware issues as my controls were pretty regularly not working, buttons not being recognized etc. For example:
* Horizon, left hand wouldn't respond to triggers
* Demeo, left hand wouldn't respond to triggers
* No Man's Sky, button presses were not working, couldn't even get into the game
Disconnecting and reconnecting the controllers helped a bit, I did get Horizon and Demeo working and No Man's Sky worked briefly, but there's clearly issues. Reddit is reporting the same. Things worked great in Pistol Whip so it's clearly software and not hardware issues. Didn't notice any of the "tracking drift" I had with the original where everything had a slight wobble even when standing still. When I didn't hit controller issues it was amazing.
When it did work though... wow is it good. Here are some real quick thoughts on games I tried:
* Pistol Whip is amazing. It's basically Beat Saber meets the movie Baby Driver and it rocks. I actually owned it on original PSVR but never got around to playing it because I was not really interested in getting my setup going again. PSVR2 has really low barrier to setup so this is probably gonna get a lot of play
* GT7 in VR is also phenomenal. Did a few races, the level of detail in the car and the lighting are fantastic. Combined with the haptics it really gives a sense of connection to the road. This might become my default way of playing GT7.
* Moss II is gorgeous, that might be the thing I focus on first. I loved the original but the visual fidelity this time around is really impressive. Can't wait to dig in.
* Rez Infinite was bonkers, the head tracking worked for aiming and it was flawless and really natural feeling. Rez is one of my all-time favorite games and this is easily the best version of it. I did play it on PSVR and it was quite good but this felt even more impressive between the visual upgrade and head tracking.
* Demeo took awhile to get working with the controller, but I finally did to spend a short time with it. I actually played this on PC non-VR and didn't much care for the gameplay itself so I didn't understand the hype. The presentation in VR is pretty awesome though and at least at first blush makes up for what I consider to be somewhat lackluster gameplay. We'll see how much I mess around with it but it makes me think that board games in VR are now possible.
* NFL Pro Era (demo) is not something that would usually be up my alley. I enjoy watching a little bit of NFL games (mostly to watch the Packers) but I don't really enjoy football video games any more. While the throwing physics itself are a little questionable, I will say there is something to actually being the quarterback and having to scan the field to find the open player and then trying to make the pass. If you are a hardcore football fan I could see it being interesting but it was certainly a novelty for me.
* Horizon Call of the Mountain I had too many controller issues to get far into this either. Did eventually get it mostly working but my bow still wouldn't stash with the left controller which appears to be a common issue right now. I didn't get as far as I did from my time with the beta so I can't speak much to the game now, but that opening set piece is breathtaking.
Hopefully the controller issues get ironed out soon as those were a pretty significant issue and limited what I was able to try out. The upgrade in visuals from the first PSVR is difficult to overstate. It's like if generationally we went straight from PS2 to PS5 for consoles. I also found the haptics in the controllers and headset to be a great addition without feeling too overpowering (especially on the headset). Adds a nice level of immersion.
Can't wait to sit down/stand up and play more!
