NFL 2022: The Week 9 thread

Hear me out on this: Pete Carroll retires and the Seahawks hire... Mina Kimes.

Jeff Saturday is the first NFL head coach with no prior NFL or college coaching experience since Norm Van Brocklin became coach of the expansion Minnesota Vikings the year after he retired from playing.

Sounds like they're pretty certain, and the MRI will be to assess if there's further damage.

De'Vondre Campbell, who was injured himself a week ago on Buffalo's turf, went off about the turf fields the team has played on the past two weeks.

Well.... Ford Field is a covered stadium. Not sure if they could pull off what the Cardinals and Raiders do.

Buffalo has no excuse.

I'm sure Odell has opinions on turf vs grass also.

But yes seems like a no brainer if you ran a team you would want to ensure your players don't play on a surface that could hurt them even if the difference is marginal considering the type of injuries are not.

Then tear it down and build one that isn't. If they can play football outside in Ann Arbor, and they can play football outside in East Lansing, and they can play baseball outside in Detroit, they can play football outside in Detroit too.

More realistically, the league should devise some stringent safety standards on playing surfaces, and severely penalize the teams whose surfaces don't meet those standards. In turn, those teams should ratchet up the heat on the turf companies to devise surfaces that prioritize safety and "give" over minimizing upkeep. Even with "modern" turfs, we always hear the same thing from players: it's like playing on concrete.

Michigan Stadium is turf. Spartan Stadium is one of the few Big Ten stadiums with grass but that's a fairly recent development (2002) and there seems to be some discussion about going back to turf.

Maintaining grass up here after October isn't particularly easy and the college season effectively ends at Thanksgiving (all northern bowls are in indoor stadiums or Yankee stadium for some stupid reason).

That said, give it a couple years and it'll regularly be 60 in January so none of this will matter.

Hometown officiating has started early.

Oh i'm so excited for this.

Funny seeing 2 QBs saying that it wasn't PI, defending an interception.

It only gets better:

"Yes, he is fully experienced enough. Yes, he is fully capable."

"He's the best man for the job. There's no question about it, in my mind. ... If he turns us down, we're not here today."

“Look we’re the fourth winningest franchise in the league since 2000. That means in the upper quartile of winners were in the top quartile of that upper quartile.”

I was going to prop your Mina take, Ratboy but now we've got all these awesome Irsay quotes. Can't believe he dropped this one:

"Best man for the job" (!!!)

The analytics guys have too much fear? They're the ones saying go for it on less than 4th and 5 from your own side of the field!

Ravens starting their late game self destruction.

lol. Yeah. That delay of game penalty got me pissed off, but it looks like there was enough left to close it out.

The Ravens didn't show anything new. I described it to my friend as the "brunch menu" version of the playbook. There was some good execution though.

Who knew that great defensive play and rushing for 6.5 yards per play was a recipe for success? Nobody!

If the Josh Allen UCL is as ugly as feared, Keenum is not taking that team to the playoffs with that remaining schedule.

I see 5 losses without Allen.

Imagine if the Colts win next week. And they play the Raiders, so it's entirely possible to win by sheer accident.

Lol, yes. It's a lose-lose scenario for McDaniels because they'll get no credit for winning and they'll call for his head too if he loses.

And then we get interim head coach Rich Gannon.

Other options...

Saturday was a 6-time Pro Bowler. Obviously Mark Davis can't choose any of these scrubs with fewer Pro Bowls!

I present to you, 7-time Pro Bowler and the new head coach of YOUR Las Vegas Raiders... #1 all-time leading punter, Shane Lechler:

I'm not at all convinced that Chris Ballard is an actual person, and not just Michael Rooker pulling a fast one.

Speaking of lookalikes, Janikowski looking like Dana White in that pic.

I'm pretty sure Jeff Saturday went to Best Buy, found an employee playing Madden, and offered him to be his play caller.

Frazier is a native of Corinth, Miss. and graduated from Murray State with a degree in computer science.

Dammit, why did nobody tell me that going from state school computer science grad to 30 year old NFL playcaller was an option? Fresno State's guidance counselors have some explaining to do.

if (selection=='F1')
{
// the F1 key was pressed
printf("PASS THE BALL TO THE OPEN GUY:");
}
else
{
// other key was pressed
if (selection=='F2')
{
// the F2 key was pressed
printf("GIVE IT TO THE GUY WHO RUNS FAST:");
}
else
{
// other key was pressed
if (selection=='F3')
{
// the F3 key was pressed
printf("uh, PUNT:");
}
else
{
// other key was pressed
printf("Please only press F1, F2 or F3.");
};
};
};
return a.exec();
}

Are we entirely sure Irsay hasn't fallen off the wagon at this point?

We are absolutely not sure of that at all.

In the clip of Chris Ballard linked above, Irsay didn't exactly look like he was all there.

How pissed is Josh McCown that the former player with no coaching experience beyond high school who gets a head coaching gig isn't him?

He also played QB at Murray State, so there's that?
