Welcome folks, and happy “Samhain” week!

Samhain was an ancient Celtic festival, practised in Britain and Ireland thousands of years ago, before the Romans or Christianity took hold. Back then, they started the new year on the equivalent of November 1, at the start of winter. The night before, it was believed that the dead would return to their homes and possibly hassle people, so the living wore ghostly masks and costumes so as not to be recognised by the spirits. There was also the practice of souling, where the poor would visit the wealthy and ask for “soul cakes” in return for a promise to pray for the souls of their departed loved ones. Eventually children got in on the act, and in Scotland, it was customary for the kids to sing a song, tell a joke, or perform a trick before being given their treat. You may all celebrate by ignoring people who say Halloween is a purely American invention.

It’s another quiet week, a brief pause before some juggernauts drop to take 2022 out with a bang.

There’s a bunch of hastily-thrown together Halloween-themed indies on Steam, heaps of shovelware for the kiddies, some this-gen editions of older games, and a bunch of horror games.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Galactic Edition bundles in a bunch of character packs from other Star Wars properties, like Rogue One and The Mandalorian, without putting in any levels or missions from them. Seems pretty pointless, really. Although it’s touted as the biggest LEGO game, The Skywalker Saga felt strangely compressed to me. Every film is boiled down to a few missions, like you’re hurtling through the story at 2x speed, without giving a sense of scope or scale. The LEGO Marvel Super Heroes games did a much better job of selling you on a big world packed with secrets to find, and one of them was set in a single city. Look at me, a 46-year old man getting het up about LEGO games.

Broken Pieces is a supernatural thriller. The heroine is exploring a French seaside village that is stuck outside time. There’s puzzling, some combat with shadow monsters, and audiologs galore, as you uncover a mystery involving a cult. You can switch between first-person and third-person camera modes and even change the season between summer and winter at will. There’s also a clock system, where you have to get back to your house by 8pm each night. This could establish a rhythm to your play, but could also just be an unnecessary handbrake on progress. There’s quite a few features thrown in here—the issue is how they all gel together.

WRC Generations is KT Racing’s 7th and final entry in this World Rally racing series before Codemasters takes over. It’s going out with a big bang, offering a whopping 165 rally stages (including the new Sweden and Japan stages) and countless cars, including new hybrid-boosted racers. There’s also a new online league mode. The driving experience is roughly the same as in WRC 10, and looks like driving wheels are a must. The sheer size of this game is leaving some pretty big boots for Codemasters to fill.

OlliOlli World: Finding the Flowzone is a big, final expansion that takes this chill skateboarding sidescroller to the clouds. It’s a whole game’s worth of new levels, with a couple of new features such as gusts of wind that can blow you in the opposite direction and some extreme-difficulty tracks for veterans. This looks like the perfect treat for fans.

Die by the Blade is a 1v1 fighting game where you wield Japanese weapons to inflict one-hit kills. There are no health bars; only one-hit kills. Too bad if you get stabbed in the toe. Punishingly brutal, or brutally punishing?

Yuppie Psycho: Executive Edition is a weird blend of anime and pixellated, Sierra-era adventure gaming. It’s clearly inspired by films like American Psycho and The Devil’s Advocate, as you play a besuited man who is haunted by violent visions and losing his grip on reality. All this while he navigates a new job in a mega corporation's Cthulhu-like office environment. It’s got old-school puzzle-solving, based on finding items and working out where to use them to progress. It could be a fun, retro, Halloween treat.

The Chant is a horror game set at a spiritual island retreat. A drumming circle goes horribly awry and accidentally opens a portal to a dimension called The Gloom, unleashing ethereal terrors that threaten to engulf the island and maybe the world. You play as Jess, one of 6 characters at the retreat. She has to take care of Mind, Body, and Spirit, each with their own stats and upgrade trees, as she explores the island and tries to put a stop to the Gloom. Combat is based on crafting—Jess needs to find stuff to craft different weapons that exploit the weaknesses of different enemies. As she is not a natural fighter, these will be crucial to survival, and sometimes fleeing is the best choice. The production values are quite high, with mo-capped performances from the cast, and the island retreat is a mini-open-world hub with different levels branching off of it.

There’s nothing on my wishlist this week, but I guess I should pick a suitable game for Halloween. The Chant looks like the most cohesive horror game this week. The devs include alumni from Sleeping Dogs and Bully, so there is a pedigree there. One of the most unsettling things from the previews is that your character is barefoot the entire time, even while exploring dense forest and climbing on pointy rocks. Ouchie!

Comments

I wonder if Atari can do the same with Missile Command Recharged that was done with Yars Recharged.

Oh, The Entropy Centre is this week?

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is legit one of the best Lego games.

Missile Command Recharged doesn't reach Yars Recharged level of great, but it is fun. And it can be madness.
