Welcome folks, and happy “96th Anniversary of Houdini’s last performance” week!

When Harry Houdini took to the stage at the Garrick Theater in Detroit on October 24, 1926, he had already received the infamous gut punches that ended up being fatal. He also had a broken ankle—it was the broken ankle that had prevented him from standing and bracing himself for the gut punches. But he went on with his show, passed out during, was revived and finished like a pro. He died a week later on Halloween. You may all celebrate by holding a seance on Halloween night to contact Houdini, which is a tradition in magician circles.

Bayonetta 3 drops amid some controversy over the last-minute change of voice actor for Bayonetta. There’s conflicting allegations of underpayment and overdemands. I don’t know the truth of it, but let’s not go after the voice actors, eh? There’s usually corporations being corporationey at the bottom of these feuds. The game itself has been a long time coming, and looks as stylish as Bayonetta normally does, with her hair-based attacks. The new thing is that Bayonetta can now summon demons. While holding a shoulder button down, you fight as the demon, and this can be for just one hit to finish a combo, or for most of a fight, while Bayonetta dances to keep the demon under her thrall. There will be different types of demons, with different movesets, to choose from and equip to your hotbar. Also, these demons can bond with Bayonetta’s weapons to provide different special moves when equipped. There’s also another playable character, Viola. All up, it looks as exciting and glamorous as Bayonetta fans could hope for, maybe even a better sequel than Bayonetta 2.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II also drops this week. This is the Infinity Ward CoD, using the new IW engine. Apparently the different CoD devs had been using different engines up until now, and from now on, they will all use this one. The campaign will feature events ripped from recent headlines and the multiplayer will be same-same, but different, in ways that only folks who play each annual instalment will understand. There’s so many CoDs that the devs can rummage around and pull out mechanics from past entries. Swimming is back, as is diving into prone. One new feature is hanging from ledges. You can peek over the ledge and fire a pistol, but I wouldn’t stay there too long.

Victoria 3 is the long-awaited sequel to Paradox’s grand strategy game that starts in 1836 and goes to 1936. I guess you steer your country through the later stages of an industrial revolution and see if you can cap it all off with a massive world war ... or try to avoid it. Despite the vast amount of real-world conflict that took place between 1836 and 1936, Victoria 3 focuses more on society and economy, although some countries will be more primed for war than others. People have a surprisingly complex set of needs, and Paradox loves to model these complexities. It’s more zoomed-out than the personal family dramas that dominate Crusader Kings 3 but more approachable than, say, Europa Universalis IV. It’s all presented with Paradox’s signature beautiful maps. This has been 12 years in the making and incorporates much of Paradox’s recent lessons in UI and how it presents information to the player. If you love layers of nested tooltips, and wrestling with supply and demand, then this is for you.

Frog Detective 3: Corruption at Cowboy County is a whimsical game with the premise of solving a mystery. The main fun is in the quirky encounters with other characters, rather than having to exercise the little grey cells. Enjoy what will be the last game in the Frog Detective series.

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord finally comes to consoles, giving couch gamers a chance to experience this renowned medieval sandbox action-strategy RPG. It will also finally leave Early Access after 2 years. Take the plunge to find out why that one friend dropped out of all your other online gaming groups these past 2 years and now only drinks mead.

Resident Evil Village is getting a big expansion in time for Halloween. Re:Verse is a multiplayer mode, finally here after numerous delays. It’s 2-6 player deathmatches. When you die, you can come back as one of Resident Evil’s signature monsters. Winter’s Expansion includes another chapter of Village, set a few years after the events of the main game, and you play as Ethan Winters’ daughter Rose. Rose has freaky, unwanted powers and she has to head back to Castle Dimitrescu to get rid of them. It’s in third-person mode and Rose never quite runs as fast as you want her to, harking back to original Resident Evils. Although you do get a gun, it’s ineffective and more of a last resort—the focus seems to be more on evasion. The expansion also unlocks third-person mode in the main game and 3 new playable characters in Mercenaries Mode (which is a time-limited wave mode) … including Lady Dimitrescu herself. Fanservice ahoy!

Star Ocean: The Divine Force is this week’s JRPG. One of these 100-hour, 6th-entry-in-a-series kinda JRPGS has been dropping every week or so for the last few months. Does anyone have time to play them all?

My GOTW, on pure style points, is Bayonetta 3. It looks surprisingly good considering it’s out on the Switch, whose hardware is definitely showing its age by now. It could be the last game your Switch ever runs before collapsing in a heap like the Bluesmobile, but what a swansong!

Comments

Star Ocean looks good even thought Tri-ace is gone.

I'm excited for Frog Detective 3 (the whole series will be on GamePass) and I also think Dave the Diver looks really cool.

Does anyone have time to play them all?

I mean, isn't this what people mean when they call me to ask about my retirement plan?

You'll still be button-mashing your way through the text-based dialogue

Absolutely! Eventually, I will be able to claim that I've played every possible variation on Disco Elysium, and not just a handful of variations of "sad feminist comrade cop."

How very dare you do that to Kim.
