@ Roguelike games

Thanks A_Unicycle. It looks fun. I grabbed it on iOS to play on iPad in bed.

Crosspost from the Steam Deck thread:

For fans of Vampire Survivors: 20 minutes Till Dawn appears to be solid, especially for $3.

Nothing to see here. Go play Cult of the Lamb.

Just not on consoles (crashed twice in the same spot for me trying to get through the 2nd boss (so still the tutorial really)) and it seems like there are performance/input lag issues on Switch. It'll be fixed at some point but will it be weeks or months?

I believe there was some chatter in this thread earlier about Rift Wizard. I noticed it was on sale today and bit the bullet despite my poor history with the more traditionally-learning games in this genre. While not ASCII, the crude graphics and way the information is presented made me cautious.

I'm already in love. The information is clear and easily accessible, the UI just works, the the core gameplay is a devilish little twist on the formula. You have a spellbook with hundreds of options, combined with passive skills and varying ways of upgrading spells. It's all just there, available from the start for you to begin tinkering with.

The goal is to create a strong synergistic spellbook and clear each of the 25 randomly generated rooms. This is made more difficult by spawning blocks that leak out enemies if you aren't quick to destroy them, varying status effects and a massive amount of enemy types. You get to preview 1 of 3 rooms to go into after clearing the previous, with each containing different arcane circles or shrines that give you points to upgrade or further modify your spells.

It's on sale right now and I can't recommend it enough. Don't miss out

(Also I know I said they were crude graphics, but I genuinely like them. The sprites all have a lot of character!)

Nowhere on the Steam page answers this question: Is it turn-based or real-time?

Turn-based.

Purchased, thanks!

It is a sprite-based roguelike in classic style.

This game (Rift Wizard) is incredibly good. But also very difficult. It really requires you to plan ahead for eventualities. You will have to play it a lot and die a lot until you know what you need to plan for. I have played a ton of roguelikes and this one is probably the least tolerant of reactive play. Make a plan towards specific strength goals for best results. There are a hundred ways to win and a lot of them don't jump out at you. It could last you a lifetime. I also love the graphics. I wish this game was around in the 80's when I had more time.

Tried Slice and Dice on Android last week. Pretty fun. I have some store credit so I think I might pay the $7 to unlock the full thing.

But if you want it, the full game is also $7 at itch.Io but there it comes with the PC version and the Android version both. So if you're not getting it free on play like me might as well buy there for both versions.

Slice and Dice is fantastic. It's just had a massive content update that I'm itching to sink my teeth into.

One of the best games I have installed on my phone!

Also glad I could sell somebody on Rift Wizard

I bounced off Rift Wizard but I really should give it another try. What bugged me the first time was that it felt like it was full of newbie traps- interesting-looking builds that could never really hold up.

Tried it out after your post and then bought it. Been having a lot of fun with it.

I kind of agree, qaraq, but I think in this kind of "finish the levels" Roguelike, as the difficulty ramps it's designed to make you die and learn what the new increment requires, and work out a way to accommodate it. It seems like a way to stretch the game out, where you learn how to plan for each level in a way that affects how you build, and you only develop that knowledge through experience - multiple failed runs.

Dicey Dungeons is stupid fun. Grabbed it on Switch for $2 last week. Tried the intro for each character, as you are forced to do. Robot is my early favorite. Thief seemed interesting until I stole the turn into a bear power from some enemy and then got stuck as a bear for the rest of the round. Actually made it to the 4th floor that way but ran out of steam. Then I couldn't win as regular thief the next try. So he's the only character I failed 2x with so far.

Inventor is tough, scrapping one of your items every fight. Just when I have a decent setup I have to blow it up. I got caught with not enough damage and failed that intro episode as well. Haven't tried again because I did 2nd warrior episode and now 2nd and 3rd robot episode. I'll get back to those episode 1s eventually.

I think my favorite moment as robot was when enemy ice something cast all freeze on me so I cast 13 dice to get a perfect overload, then used that "dmg x roll" with a 1to do 13 damage, hehehe. And there was an achievement for 10 1s in a row so I guess they figured that would happen. Pretty cool.

It's very good (so is the music!). I'm still trying to get used to the Switch controls because I first played it on PC. They've done a good job porting it over.

I had no idea there was free DLC, so I'm keen to brush up on the game then try it out.

Finally won with thief last night on attempt 3, pretty smoothly. But inventor just lost episode 1 again. It's damned frustrating. Get good equip, then trash it. Rinse, repeat. Eventually I am stuck with a choice of 3 things I don't want to get rid of and then the next fight screws me. Again, couldn't do enough damage.

Like I have an item that you can use any dice on, does 3 damage and returns the dice. That's just 3 free damage, every turn. And it offers you to turn it into "roll another dice" use once per turn power. Well that might be more than 3 damage, but it might not. But if I don't have another attack item to slot it it's definitely worse. And in general the permanent power is just worse than the active one. I hate it.

Think I'm going to keep going with other characters and ignore this one for a bit.

There's a huge difference in difficulty between the different characters. The hardest ones require a lot of luck with the RNG to complete a run and it can get a bit frustrating.

Just FYI, Peglin has had several major content updates since I last posted, and the game is much more varied and complex than it was before. And they are still adding to it! It's a nice, relaxing peg and ball game, with enough going on to keep you thinking as you play.

Hey so Cult of the Lamb is really damned good, and I've only just barely scratched the surface. Roguelike mixed with a bit of city-builder and a hint of survival? Yes please!
