Fabulous Final Fantasy Franchise Discussion Catch-all

Anyway this weekend I finally did those first 3 sin battles. And then Inside Sin, and good grief how much longer is endgame? Fighting Seymour again?!

Jeez.

Anyway looks like a whole other area then maybe finally at the actual end point of no return.

And I was right, was able to completely dominate the couple of story boss fights. Lulu does double cast flare 9999 every time since I never did do the lightning dodge for her weapon. Anima just did 20k regular attacks against everything. There was some enemy inside sin that does 7k when you kill it but I just killed it with Anima and shrugged off the damage instead of having a party wipe. Hehehe

Maybe I can push through this week and beat the darn thing finally.

FFX is finally finished!

And yeah Aeons and stuff, I was way overleveled. The final real boss fight that you could lose... Yuna summoned Anima, and overdrive did 217k damage. Hehehehe. Game.

Final cutscene was as expected, after revelations earlier in the game.

Definitely want to get to X-2 at some point.

Please mention when you do start X-2; that might be the kick I need for me to play it again.

If FFXV's theme was "Boy Band Road Trip," then FFX-2's theme is "Jpop World Tour!" What would the world do if the single millennia-old sanctimonious and hyperjudgmental church that held 90% of a planet made of tropical islands in its iron grip was suddenly and completely proven wrong and overthrown overnight? The answer is wear less clothing and go f*cking nuts. Plus, the dressphere system is awesome.

F*ck it, I'm installing now.

Yeah, I like how X-2 gets to tackle the question of "what happens after the world is saved?" It's not perfect, but the dressphere system is great, and it's fun checking in with everyone to see how they're getting on after the first game. I don't recall the actual plot very well, and having to replay to get the true ending (unless you PERFECTLY follow a guide) is a pain, but I do intend to replay it at some point.

Oh so maybe a guide? I definitely won't have time for 2 runs

Honestly I wouldn't recommend trying to follow a guide. It makes the experience more stressful, and it's very easy to mess up and miss out on the 100% completion. It's a complete experience still, and you can youtube the real ending if you want.

X-2 also has a significant story branch at one point, and a New Game+ that makes it very easy to get the 100% completion if you follow the different branch. (You can actually end up with more than 100% completion pretty easily.) Although you might want to follow a guide to get the "mascot" dresspheres that aren't available until the end of the game; they are very powerful and can help you breeze through a new game.

And IIRC, the "real ending" is just a short additional cutscene.

Yeah I did grab all the extra summons in X. It might have made things too easy in the main game but it was fun.

Guess that bonus stuff sounds similar. Maybe I'll just check a tips article and not full guide.

I can’t believe I they are making another Theatrhythm game. I thought for sure the audience was limited to me and me alone.

Very excited.

I played Curtain Call a bit. It was fun, didn’t put a ton of time into it, but I’m glad to see one on the Switch. Probably pick it up eventually.

There's at least two of us. I consider Theatrhythm to be an absolute system-seller-tier game for me.

I also imported a Japanese 3DS for two reasons: because I wanted the liquid metal slime edition (IT'S SO PRETTY) and to play Dragon Quest Theatrhythm, which was not the least bit disappointing!

I like this. I wish more game devs understood this. I probably should be playing either games like FFIV or indie games, because I can’t think of many companies making reasonably sized RPGs.

Count me in as well. Nier music too? Now I'm committed to the DLC.

Yeah, as much as I love the Trails series, the Cold Steel games are just too long. Sky felt great with my completionist blind play through clicking in around 50 hours. And it did not require a replay to see everything.

Thank you again to LastSurprise and hbi2k for turning me on to the No One Can Know About This podcast. Their latest season of FF8 perfectly complimented my playthrough that I just finished, and it gave me hours and hours of excellent entertainment that is unmatched by anything else I’ve listened to this year.

And hearing them go through an entire bonus season just to do the Queen of Cards quest and collect all the Triple Triad cards? That was so amazing and therapeutic to hear someone else suffer through the same ordeal I just went through. To give you an idea, they spent 15 whole episodes doing pretty much just those two things, which is longer than entire seasons for other games they’ve played. So yeah it was a total nightmare, and it was so fun to hear all their ups and downs trying to pull it off.

Anyway, for anyone that hasn’t checked out that podcast yet — I highly recommend it.

You're welcome! I love those guys. For some reason, Ryan absolutely losing his s*** at infuriating video minutes gets me laughing like none other. Cannot wait for Season 9.

New trailer just dropped

Summer 2023 cannot get here soon enough.

I'm still not very optimistic.

Should we make a FF16-specific thread or keep it in here? Seems like discussion always migrates here eventually so I have no problem keeping it in here.

I imagine when it releases it'll be good to have a XVI-specific thread for detailed game discussion/questions/advice, but otherwise yeah, the discussion will probably happen here.

Umm, this really should be in the Ask a Question thread.

;P

Seems fine to keep it here until the game is actually out. Then if there is enough interest maybe it gets it's own thread.

Anyone checking out Crisis Core today? I want to finish my FF7R replay and do the Yuffie DLC finally before starting. The reviews were pretty good for it overall, and I never played it on PSP, so I'm looking forward to finally playing it.

I did play on PSP and while it was fine, I have zero desire to revisit it. If the reviews were rave, maybe.

Finally, the pixel remasters are coming to consoles!

About damn time!

I finished replaying FF7 Remake, along with the Yuffie DLC. I still absolutely adore FF7R. I love the battle system, materia is still really fun to tinker with, and overall it really is one of the best Final Fantasy games in years. This was my first time playing the Yuffie DLC and really enjoyed it. Her suite of abilities is really fun, managing to combine melee, ranged, and magical attacks in satisfying ways. The boss fights were fun spectacles, and figuring out how to take them out efficiently made me feel smart for experimenting with her abilities.

I've also managed to get halfway through Crisis Core this weekend. This game is fun to play, but the presentation and structure are really lacking. Poor voice acting, lots of inane, superfluous cutscenes, and a structure that makes sense for a portable console but just feels grindy and padded out now. The main story seems pretty lean and missions don't take long. But there are hundreds of side missions that give items, materia, and other rewards. Some of the rewards are quite good overall, and make the main story missions pretty trivial. But they're very repetitive, and most have only external quest text to give them different context from the rest. The combat system itself is fun, but the slot machine nature of the "DMW" for summons, limit breaks, and materia and character leveling is just bizarre. I hope to never see it again once I'm done.
