Giant Bomb Bomb-All

Also Jeff Gerstmann blowing up at his discord chat for their incorrect rapper opinions is the best. I'm really enjoying his podcast and streaming.

Same. I didn't think I'd like listening to one person speak for so long, but I really like Jeff. So it's been his show and Nextlander for my gaming podcasts these days.

Pop culture wiki service Fandom has acquired a whole bunch of gaming and entertainment sites including media sites GameSpot and Giant Bomb, the company announced today. As part of the deal with Red Ventures, Fandom also gain Metacritic and GameFAQs, along with broader entertainment coverage through Comic Vine and TV Guide. The cost of the purchase wasn’t disclosed.

They got sold again? How long until Stop and Bomb are merged into one and half of each crew are laid off?

Considering Tam and Lucy are already considered part of GB, I'd say that's very close to happening.

I say by the end of the year GS will be doing quick looks and the Bombcast will be the last thing that has a contiguous lineage to something that we knew from that site.

And by the end of 2023 giantbomb.com redirects to gamespot.com

I think that would be hilarious, all things considered.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Jeff Grubb talks about the acquisition of GB close to the start of this Game Mess.

Game Bomb and Giantspot are my favorite video games news sites.

I'm sorry.

Edit: Oh that's right, I forgot that Fandom bought Fanatical (formerly Bundle Stars) in 2021, and Curse in 2019.

If you want to watch mayhem and chaos, there's the Great Giant Bombathon happening today, live, in New York, with the entire crew.

It's on Twitch.tv/GiantBomb and standard Giantbomb.com/chat.

It started at noon Eastern, and boy... has it started

I barely listen to the Bombcast anymore, but for funsies I thought I’d check out the latest one just to see how the new crew is doing.

Right off the bat, Dan described eating egg yolks as “gross”, and seemingly not 5 minutes later he went on to proudly proclaim how his favorite thing is to dig old popcorn buckets out of the trash to get free refills without paying.

So yeah… the more things change, the more things stay the same.

Really glad to hear I'm not missing anything ever since I stopped listening.

Dan sucks.

The podcast has been a rotating cast since the changes. Jan and Grubb have been constants while two of Bakalar, Jason, Dan, Jess, Tam, and Lucy have joined. It’s made for a pretty diverse podcast as every week there’s a different line-up.

This week’s was pre-recorded since everyone was traveling to New York. They made a point of barely talking about games so it was far more silly. Dan’s actually been much more subdued and hasn’t been playing a character since coming back.

I still watch most of their content, and enjoy it a lot. <3

Can I introduce you to the true Giant Bomb?

I've been with them, and Jeff's new stuff, since their inception.

I’m rocking all three. Has been very hard to keep up with all the content, though.

Agreed. As Nextlander continues to have old GB cast on their shows, it seems pretty conspicuous that Gertsmann isn't on it. I mean, it happens- they were together for a long time and people grow apart, but it seems that the continued split is a decision and not just an act of leaving GB at different times.

Just my guess of course.

I wonder if there was some resentment when they just up and left GB. I certainly hope not. I want all of those folks to like each other.

I think, right now, it's mostly a matter of letting everyone do their own thing. Jeff is clearly still frustrated over whatever happened that facilitated his leaving of GB. During one of the big events earlier in the summer, Nextlander checked in on both GB and Jeff by swapping over to their streams.

I miss Jeff having folks to talk to. He can certainly fill an hour or two talking but it's just not the same. Has that changed at all for his podcast?

I would not be surprised if Jeff shows up on the NL podcast at some point, and vise versa.

On his latest free podcast, Gerstmann talked a bit about his departure. Rather than recap, I'll just
link it here at the appropriate time stamp.

Over the past few weeks, he's said or done things that certainly brush up against his frustrations with RV and no doubt CBS as well, in particular when the sale to Fandom was announced, he took the time to thank his supporters for giving him the chance to do his thing without worrying about "being traded around like baseball cards," and how much happier he was now that he didn't have to argue to higher-ups that what they do is important all the time.

I've found myself drifting away from GB more and more, getting to the podcast when I get to it. While I appreciate that the new(ish) crew is trying their best, I just don't find it gelling, and it often isn't what I came to the podcast for. While I think Jan is great, and Grubb, Tam, and Lucy are undeniable gets, the latter two are rarely on. Bakalar I like, mostly because he's the closest to my disposition, and Jason is solid, but intermittent and often too low key. I think at the time Jess was a valuable addition, but as that time goes on, her origins as a sh*tposter rather than journalist and her limited tastes show more and more, which is fine, it's no doubt how I'd be on such a podcast, but it's not what I'm into for this podcast. Dan I rarely see--last thing that stands out is him comically overplaying that he didn't know how Molotov cocktails work, which, given how pervasive they are in games, I'm calling bullsh*t upon. Bullsh*t.

The only thing I still get from GB is the Albummer podcast. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I find it entertaining.

I would say Nextlander is who I follow the most from GB Alum, and I listen to Jeff's podcast. But new(ish) GB just felt less and less like GB and it just made me feel sad. I cancelled my sub and dropped their podcasts, other than Albummer.

Sounds like Jeff got the better end of the deal in the long-term, anyway. Hate it for the GB folks still around, I still love those guys, but it's not the same without Jeff around.

I'm actually really enjoying a bunch of the new stuff of the new GB crew. Jeff had got extremely dour the last several years and him going solo has really allowed him to have fun.

The problem I have is there's too much stuff spread across GB, Nextlander, and Gerstmann. I don't have the time.

Agreed.

As crappy and unfortunate as the circumstances may have been, it sees like a thing that's probably for the best in many respects all around.

I've never been a heavy consumer of Giant Bomb content -- just the main podcast and the dumptruck -- but I've actually really been impressed by the way things have come together, and I've really enjoyed the shift in tone that seems to have come from Jan's infectious optimism fully taking the lead o the main cast (and the dumptruck remains as silly and stupid fun as ever).

Meanwhile, it's been clear for ages that Jeff wasn't happy with the circumstances he was working with, and he seems a lot more so now.

That said, the problem of too much content is very, very real. Both Giant Bomb and Nextlander were already on "skip sometimes" status before the split, so I'm afraid it's pretty rare for me to have time to add Jeff to my media plate. Wish I could do it more, but there's only so many hours in the day!

For whatever reason I'm listening to fewer podcast and more music, but I still catch the Bombcast every week. It's not the same but I enjoy it. Jeff has some of Jeff's cynicysm and Jeff has a lot Jeff's knowledge, which helps things feel familiar enough.
