This Friday is the last Friday we get to play Overwatch 1.

Sorry, I've only been skimming the news on this. Does this mean that everyone who has bought Overwatch 1 can no longer play it? Or simply that the devs will no longer be working on that iteration?

My understanding is that it's gone. No longer playable. You can play Overwatch 2, however. Your skins, money, etc. transfer over. It will also open all your loot boxes for you. I had 750 loot boxes opened for me and had 65k coins instead. I think that happened last week or so. Anything you really want to buy you should buy now. Loot boxes are going away, too. Money is earned by playing and can be spent on what you want. They call it Overwatch 2 but it's really Overwatch 1.5. Overwatch 2 is free but people who own OW1 get a few bonuses in the first season of Owerwatch 2. You can find more info on that here.

They've stated that they will have an arcade mode with the original OW ruleset, but going forward it will be the new format and client for OW2 being used for the base game

Have they said anything about regions or matchmaking, or will you still not be able to choose your region?

No clue on this. Nothing in the initial release info that i remember

That was helpful. I thought I was never playing again, but F2P, I guess I could try again since lots of new people will be around, maybe I won't stand out at sucking so bad.

I've kept the old one installed and getting rewards for login or from Amazon Prime or whatever. But I haven't actually played a match in 2 or 3 years probably.

I haven't seen anything changing what is current, so would assume it is still going to not allow you to force your region and only connect u to the best ping server.

Huzzah. Guess I'll try OW2 for a week and bounce off because of the region thing then...

Tonight, Friday, I will have up a custom OW lobby for for GWJ v GWJ action. will start it up around 6pm PST (9pm EST). Will also be in Discord chat. Feel free to hop in.

So, what happens with console versions? I wonder if starting up overwatch on the console will just prompt you do download Overwatch 2?

In my PS5, the Overwatch Icon has been updated to Overwatch 2. When I selected it, I could only download the original.

For existing PC players and Watchpoint Pack owners on PC, Overwatch 2 can be pre-downloaded now! This download will happen automatically in the background if you have automatic updates enabled on Battle.net, otherwise you must manually begin the download by clicking on the gear icon on the right side of the play button and selecting "Check for Updates." For existing console players, this can be done starting at approximately 9:00 a.m. PDT on October 4.

Before charging into Overwatch 2, ensure that your account is secure by turning on SMS protection, a measure that all players must take in order to play Overwatch 2 as part of our Defense Matrix initiative that promotes healthier player behavior in game.

The last day of Overwatch is on October 2 and will be followed by an all-day blackout so that we can get our servers ready for launch. In the meantime, take this opportunity to spend your credits* on Overwatch seasonal cosmetics, all of which are now available for a limited time, or give your Overwatch 2 experience a boost with the Watchpoint Pack! This bundle will award you with some exclusive cosmetics, 2000 Overwatch Coins, the Season 1 Premium Battle Pass, and immediate access to the latest addition to Overwatch's roster: Kiriko.

Servers are off but preloading still works....sort of. Been getting 100k per second since Saturday afternoon. I'm at 14% so far (though to be fair part of that is my laptop shutting off after 30 minutes of inactivity).

if you click on the download speed you can turn off the preload bandwidth limit and then it goes fast.

Blizzard says they are under DDOS attack. If you can't get into Overwatch 2 that's why

I think that is just their default blame reason on launch days when their servers can't handle the people and new game versions.

Currently there's only 20,000 people ahead of me in the queue so I'll be playing sometime around November. Waited and it got down to 800 then it went to searching for game and went back up to 8000. Guess I should just watch the latest episode of LoTR and try again later this week.

"Disappointing" is the general feeling i'm getting from the gaming community about OW2. Makes me wonder about the long term viability of the franchise...

I like that they're requiring a phone number but also see how it would be an issue for some (especially anyone with kids who don't have a phone).

Or people like me who uses a Google Voice number which was ported to Google Fi and still considered a VOIP number so it never works

Yet that's not entirely accurate... the 10s of thousands of people trying to play would say otherwise. It's just some content creators and they don't comprise the 'community'. Just a vocal minority.

You have there a pessimistic view, i offer a hopeful one...

end of the day neither one is 'right'

Blizzard can of course turn it around. But at the moment, I see enough overlaps with the mess that was BF2042.

Issues that BF2042 had/has that OW2 doesn't:
- BUGS. BuGs. bUgs
- Broken XP progression so players couldn't earn to progression on battlepass, mastery ranks, cosmetic unlocks, etc.
- Terrain clipping, glitching, extreme light flickering triggering photosensitive players
- Basic Tooltips and Player Cards missing
- Cost $60
- Battlefield Year 1 Pass ($40) for content was delayed 8+ months
- No ability to group up and play with your friends

Issues that BF2042 and OW2 have:
- Day 1 server issues
- No single player campaign (expect OW2 will have PvE sometime in 2023)

Can you explain that one because that's not just a case of apples and oranges, but more like apples and pontiacs.

There's also a question of can it turn it around vs SHOULD IT turn it around.

End of the day this is still Overwatch. If one had a positive view of the game before launch you will still have it. If one had a negative view before launch nothing drastic has changed that is going to change that. Like taking a car to get a new paint job. When its done it will be shiny and new looking, but it will still handle and play the same. So ones opinion of the car prior to the paint job is going to carry over.

Anybody been able to get in yet?

I tried during the day yesterday and again at night but kept getting the server error message (Series X).

So I've had a quick go at lunch today. It had been a year or more since I last played Overwatch properly but this seemed much the same, 5 on a team being the major difference. I wasn't expecting the lack of post game stats and medals, play of the match and then it's onto the next game.

Having a quick search I think this is a pretty common issue... Although I updated from Overwatch 1 to 2 it appears everything has been reset, as if I'm totally new to the game. I had to do the training and am now able to play the casual quick play matches only, not able to play any other game mode, nothing else is unlocked. Majority of the characters were locked at the start too, played a few games and the classic characters of old are becoming available to me. Finally none of my skins or other custom character bits earned in the previous game have transferred to Overwatch 2. Not checked credits and all the other bits and pieces, but assume they aren't there either. Hopefully this'll get sorted and I'll get my Junebug back!

I'm looking forward to dipping toe some more into this iteration.

I played a bunch of games last night and I had a blast. It was great to be able to shoot at my opponents instead of my opponents' shields. It was also nice not get to get stunlocked by 4 different characters in a row.

That should not be the case. All skins, other character unlocks, stats and currencies from old game carry over. Sounds like possibly your old account was not linked to whatever B.Net account you used yesterday.

Or possibly an issue between merging console and PC accounts. Seems to be a common issue for others on the forums same as you.

Mainly, the crap server launch, which is a Blizzard staple.
The season pass stuff (yes it FTP to start though), which I'm not necessarily against. I just don't think Bliz will make it worth it or keep up their proposed schedule (again, Blizz staple).

I hope it does continue to improve and work well. I would love to play again. But Blizz has spent their good will bucket and no longer gets the benefit of the doubt.

It was linked, pretty sure. I checked on Bnet, when logging onto my account on the site it showed my game time earlier in the day on overwatch. I'm on PS4 so maybe that's the issue?
