The Last of Us Remake, Factions and HBO TV series - Catch All

Despite all its overlords' recent bad decisions, I signed up for Max so I could watch HotD, knowing this would be coming. I want to watch it, but I also want to replay the original first again, it's been a little while.

Sweet Jesus. I have chills on chills. Looks incredible and those clicker sounds…

Yeah, it looks really good. The only thing I'm going to have to adjust to is how different Ellie looks from her in-game counterpart, but I suspect that will only take me half an episode when the show releases.

The clicker looks perfectly terrifying.

my favorite gaming podcast Get Played released an episode on The Last of Us part 1 remake today and as usual it's excellent. Highly recommend it.

Get Played Last of Us pt1 pod

So looking forward to this.

Craig Mazin is on a podcast called Scriptnotes with another screenwriter. I was telling a friend, who doesn’t play games at all, how exciting the new HBO trailer was and he said he listened to this podcast a lot.

I've been listening to Scriptnotes for years, and I find it very enjoyable. The other writer is John August, who has written, among other things, Big Fish, Frankenweenie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Nines, and the live-action Aladdin remake.

Oh interesting. I hadn’t heard of him before.

Listening to the podcast and thinking about Chernobyl, I remember a scene, early in that series, where people come out onto a bridge to watch the disaster at Chernobyl from a distance. There was a gentle breeze blowing and you got the sense of the unseen radiation washing over those people. I remember thinking you could show the spread of spores in The Last of Us in a similar way. That was long before The Last of Us show was announced.

I remember perfectly watching that scene with the wife. She saw a look on my face and I couldn't explain w/o going down the The Last of Us rabbit hole, but she was very curious about where my mind was wandering to

It’s just a delight to hear these guys being incredibly excited by the HBO series.

Edit: I swopped out the previous video as there were some odd comments (unrelated to The Last of Us) later on.

The HBO show is premiering 15th of January apparently. How exciting.

There seems to be a second trailer for the HBO show but I couldn’t be more sold on it so I don’t think I’ll watch.

Edit: Apparently the trailer had over 8 million views in 48 hours.

I’ve been watching some of my old Uncharted Multiplayer videos and it’s gotten me very excited for The Last of Us’s new multiplayer. Hopefully we might see something at the game awards but I wouldn’t be shocked if we didn’t.

Less than a month to go. The friggin’ quality of this thing.

Sounds like we might be getting a Part 3. I’m glad if it’s true.

Spoiler:

I don’t need to follow Abby and Lev but Ellie is at rock bottom and I’d like a better ending for her story, whatever that might be.

Interesting! I would love a third game!

Bring it on!

Naughty Dog are assembling a writers’ room for their next project after the new Factions.

While I wouldn't mind leaving those characters where they are:

Spoiler:

The one issue I have with the split perspective structure of Part 2 is that the notion that the Fireflies are sort of sh*t gets a bit lost in Abby's perspective, so I wouldn't mind returning to them if they bring that theme back and hit it a bit harder by having Abby confront it.

man... they could finish Part 3 by the end of the year if only the stopped remaking the first game every 18 weeks...

Two weeks to go. Doesn’t feel real. I need to work out where I can get HBO in the UK. I think it’s incorporated into NOW TV.

Holy crap. Naughty Dog have shared another concept art image.

Some slightly longer interviews:

The videos above are lovely short interviews but they are obviously purely promotional in nature. This is a more indepth chat with Neil Druckmann about the creation of The Last of Us, how creating the show presents different narrative opportunities, his inspirations inside and outside of games and what he thinks about the future of gaming.

Aaand reviews are coming in, which is very weird. I think part of me still feels this can’t be a real thing. That a story that means so much to me has been so lovingly and successful (by the sounds of it) adapted into another medium.

I can't wait for this show to premiere!

.

I feel like I was there.

They don’t talk about the HBO show that much. It’s mainly Troy high on the buzz from the premiere (which is nice to see.) It’ll be interesting to hear from them when they’ve seen some or all of it (always a fun listen regardless.)

I don't know with 100% certainty that I want to relive the emotional rollercoaster of the game but I'm 100% certain it'll be fun watching everyone else go through it.

Is it just me or did episode one look like it was shot on VHS? Had that soap opera hyper-realism look. It didn't look like it was shot on traditional film. Maybe just how it decoded on my tv?

Thanks,
Chad

Looked fine to me on my tv, and I would have noticed otherwise.

I thought they did a great job with this episode. I enjoyed the small changes they made, and thought they did a great job setting up the world and characters. Very much looking forward to the rest.

Not needed, but episode 1 was fascinating in that it exists. Really enjoyed it. I kinda miss Fringe. That was a weird era.
