Star Citizen Catch-all

Are you kidding? I bet that's exactly why plenty of those devs are there.

Game dev teams get scaled down and people end up job hunting at the end of a project. A project that never ends? It's like government work!

Any dev that's super concerned about shipping a product has to be long gone by now.

MMOG’s get developed faster than this. The simple fact is nobody wants to spend a decade working on anything without some measure of completion.

Both of my kids were in elementary school when Star Citizen launched.

They're both in college now.

When Star Citizen launched, the Jacksonville Jaguars had only 7 winning seasons in franchise history.

Wait, that's actually changed?

Funny, the one project I worked on that ended up being cancelled was a (UK) government project.

Government work is generally hard, boring and - as you can see - often goes derided by the public even when it's valuable. People see the giant Social Security buildings, drab and aging, and rant about the lazy workers who are gobbling up tax money for their huge houses and big boats and such. But ask them about whether they'd like to see SS go away and they will *shank* you.

It would be very nice to see people not just casually reinforce the idea that government work is a sinecure, because on the whole, it's not. It's underpaid work mostly doing things that are important to the functioning of society at a basic level.

/rant

My take on SC is that, yes, it is a huge scam, but I know people who are actively enjoying the experience. If they have the disposable income to purchase and walk around a ship that will never be able to do much, that's fine. I don't judge how people derive enjoyment. These people actually enjoy SC more than ED (apparently one of the later expansions broke ED). So more power to them. For me, I may buy S42 if it is ever released, but they won't get a drop of my money until then.

This thread reminds me of that time back in 96 when I paid full price for Battlecruiser 3000AD.

This has long since passed Derek Smart levels of debacle.

Careful, you know what happens if you say that name two more times . . .

He already got banned from here, right? Or is that a false memory I have?

No, it's true.

But he can always make another account and get banned a second time!

I honestly don't think he'd feel the need to conceal himself.

This thread hasn't had a post in 7 months. Surely there's something to talk about?

Apparently last month, they merged in the "Persistent Entity Streaming" (ie. stuff stays "in world" instead of just despawning when players leave) update. Which they insisted would not "bog down" the servers.

The reality, of course, is that the servers were instantly bogged-down to the point of uselessness. A state which seems to have not changed much in the past month and a half, given the increasingly frustrated tone of the SC Reddit:

"I’d love to log in for an hour and feel like I’ve achieved something meaningful instead of time wasted because of game breaking bugs" (1)

"Tried playing [the] other day. 2 and a half hours before giving up... I managed to get from Lorville to Everus." (2)

"It's true but more and more I tend to believe it's never going to happen. Obviously their method is out of the box and the scope of it all is colossal but it's simple facts like hey I'm playing a space game that they've been working on for 10 years and raised $550 million for and I still can't eat a f*cking hotdog because I click buy and nothing happens so I walk away and fall over and die." (3)

Someone also wondered why Squadron 42 (the game that was supposed to beta release Q3 last year) doesn't get talked about much by CIG. According on the people that read the newsletters, there's nothing really to talk about.

I get the newsletter for Squadron 42 and I have to give Kudos to the folks that write that sh*t. I mean... epic nitpicking of features that are clearly the only things keeping this game from launching.

In April they worked on getting AI players to throw grenades.
April 2023.

"AI Content implemented various leisure behaviors into the campaign’s capital ships and supported an initiative to change console UI screens based on AI animation. The team are currently working on clustering NPCs together for a more natural look at tables and seating areas. Security was also added to various game locations to add further depth."
They're gonna update the screens that NPCs are interacting with!!! MIND. BLOWN.

Just let me pew-pew in an updated Wing Commander Universe before my kids are old enough to do it for me.

Total funds raised puts Star Citizen just ahead of Dominica in terms of GDP. American Samoa is next.

GDP for a year, or for the period?

for a year, fortunately! There are still a few final stages of capitalism to go through.

whoops

Wrong thread with 'Star' in the title?

"We've switched out the leading brand broken space game with our new product STARFIELD. Let's see if the players notice..."

Guys, have you heard? Star Citizen has released!

At least, that is what their legal team argued in a letter to a dissatisfied purchaser seeking a refund. While they ultimately offered a partial refund to the user, the letter was two pages stating their case why they believe they are not required to do so, including how the player's hours of play time: "shows use and enjoyment of the game and rebuts the false allegation that the game has not been released" (emphasis mine).

So, there you have it. In the opinion of Star Citizen's legal team, the game is a released product, and thus refunds should be limited and restricted to the same standards of a final released product.

Just to update this, the Jaguars now have 9 winning seasons in franchise history.

Got this in an email update today:

Attention Recruits,

We are excited to announce that Squadron 42 is now feature complete!

As we move into the polishing phase, we’re fully focused on optimizing and fine-tuning all aspects of the gameplay experience to deliver an unprecedented cinematic adventure. To celebrate this milestone, we have gathered our core development leadership from around the globe to share what this means.

Thank you for your continued support of Squadron 42.

I'm not sure I understand "what this means" means.

Came here to check in about this.
Watching the youtube video about it. Uncanny valley faces to the extreme.

I thought the characters looked better than Starfield's.

I'm actually looking forward to this now, which surprises me no end after all this time.

At about 25:00 in the video: "When can I play it?"

Roberts: "When we have the locked release date you will be the first to know."

Well, then.

I'm looking forward to its release in 2027.
