Painting Miniatures

Wow! Super cool.

I'm sorry for your loss. I love the paintjob, especially the depth on the face!

I've been struggling with burnout most of this year, but inspiration struck last night and I managed to paint something I'm proud of White isn't easy, so it was a good challenge!

Call me Pork n Gravy, because I'm on a roll

Nice, is that one of the Underworlds warband? I was thinking of chopping weapons and using for Blood Bowl vamps team.

Yeah, it's the Underworld's Crimson Court Slowly getting through them.

And here's the freebie model of the month from Warhammer!

It's been a while since posted, but I have been painting, mostly Blood Bowl. I even won Best Painted team at a NAF tourney...

I haven't painted as much as I'd like this year, but here's some progress.

First, I finished up 500pts of Tyranids and am having my first game tomorrow. Pretty nervous, hoping I actually enjoy playing! Had limited experience with some Death Guard last year, but the game is still very foreign to me

Slowly understanding how to paint whites while adding a "fleshy" tone to it.

Here's a Necron from the Imperium magazine. I've always loved adding pink to my models, so I knew I wanted bright pink energy weapons!

And finally, I'm enjoying the free monthly minis. It's a nice chance to paint something new.

Well done, nice detail work.

I've been clearing out some of my backlog, and this week finished up the loose ends on my Death Guard army.

They're cool models with a tonne of unique details, though I always get a bit carried away with the weathering effects.

MORE DAKKA PINK

Cool, is that one of the new space dwarves?

It is indeed! Leagues of Votann/Squats.

Been in a bit of a hobby slump, but I managed to find a Fungoid Cave Shaman and was pretty keen to get some colour on him!

Pretty cool!
Mainly been painting blood bowl here still... Painted up an Orc 3rd edition team, 20+ years old I guess, just to tabletop standard for a tourney. Then it's been mostly building other team minis, painting one player up and then building another team... And so it goes on. Need to settle on one squad and finish it!

That looks great! A real fun guy!

I am looking forward to an enforced week or so break over the xmas period, and some of that might be to finally make some more progress on that massive box of minis I backed on kickstarter.

(Full disclosure, I also have two more massive boxes of minis from the same company that I backed which should arrive at some point next year, AND I just backed ANOTHER big box of cheap-ish minis on KS the campaign of which just wrapped up in the last few days.)

*sweats in not enough storage for that many minis*

Are these the Blacklist fantasy minis? I Have painted up a few now... For blood bowl use.

yep. I backed the original and then the second box (plus strech goals) INCLUDING the horror mini box (plus stretch goals) they released inbetween as an addon to that second KS. So...that's a LOT of minis. (though give their delivery track record it'll be a while before they show up I reckon)

And THEN recently i backed this one: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bamdungeondelvers/forged-adventure-series-1/description

WELP. No excuses to not hit that mini backlog now I guess!

What a haul! I love that battlefield basing set, I bought one last year and still have fun with all the different bits! The snow is particularly nice.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Army Painter wet palette. I'm eyeing off one of those, or the redgrass wet palette but am unsure how much better it would be compared to my cheap home-made one. The extra size would be a huge benefit, but it's also >$50 here which I'd rather put towards miniatures.

Spoiler:

Just an old Tupperware lid with a paper towel as the sponge which I layer some baking paper over. It works really well but I can't leave it overnight or anything.
--------------

In other news, I've almost finished my backlog of Gloomspite Gitz! I never wanted to collect a horde army, but I absolutely adore these little guys. Everything about them just clicks with me. I love the chaotic silliness of the faction, but also that I'm free to paint with multiple colours! They just don't get boring!

Over the Christmas break, I tried to paint 5 models a day. It got a little tiresome near the end, but it's so satisfying stepping back and seeing them all come together like this.

I've tried to balance speed/efficiency with quality for the stabba goblins, not bothering to highlight the cloaks too much; the yellow shields are the focus so I spend more time there (and some brighter highlights on the face as usual!). Yellow over black was maddening at first, but I slowly got used to working up in layers, slowly...so slowly...

I think my initial thoughts re: the wet palette is : It's nice to have, but I don't think you'll get much more out of it than with your homemade one. It's technically got a little extra tray inside for a coupe of brushes, and a place for dry mixing which might make for a nice portable little kit, but I can't see me using that aspect of it. Having the lid helps as well but it's not airtight (and pretty loose, in fact).

Thanks Pyxistyx, sounds like the size would be nice but not a huge upgrade given the higher price of these things. Oh wells

I recently stumbled onto this video and it left an impression with me. As someone who has a bit of a chaotic approach to painting, who tries to do a little too much without a firm plan, it really hit me and made me think about the process. Be neat first, make things readable, then detail later if you can.

After watching it, I was inspired to pull out my Colossal Squig print that I'd been too intimidated to paint. I went for a similarly readable paintjob with less going on but more defined colours. It's my first mini of 2023, and I'm really proud of it!

The little nose guy was a mini I got in a batch of 3D prints off Etsy. I've wanted to add him to my Squig army for a long time and thought he'd be fun on the base of this one. I didn't know until yesterday that he's a character from Berserk , oh well! He'll still be my funny little Nose-Squig to me.

Surprise!

And a size comparison. It's the biggest thing I've painted yet!

So painting cleaner and more readable is a big goal for me moving into 2023, along with being more present in the process and rushing things less.

Anyone else have fun 2023 plans?

no match for Henry Hatsworth though!

My plans at the moment are to just carry on and complete painting my new Heroquest set. I've already finished pretty much all the furniture (bar one chest) and a half dozen figures. The furniture was super fun to paint. (will update with pics shortly)

Actually I had the idea of drawing out new board tiles for Heroquest, and writing up cards for all the creatures in the Blacklist minis boxes. But we'll see

IMAGE(https://smackfolio.files.wordpress.com/2023/01/img_20230104_151702940.jpg)

I forgot to include a couple of tables here, but they are just plain wooden tables, so whatevs!

and here's the three heroes I've painted so far (including the alt femme barbarian from the Frozen Horror pack)

IMAGE(https://smackfolio.files.wordpress.com/2023/01/img_20230104_151844021.jpg)

Not much can match Henry Hatsworth

And nice! that's a sweet collection. The furniture looks like a joy to paint, I don't think I've ever tried something like that.

Love the Warrior on the left, the snow looks great and so do the tattoos!

The Blacklist fantasy series 1 boxes that I thought I'd never see should FINALLY be arriving tomorrow after the ages and ages of US distribution limbo insanity, so I popped in for some inspiration and unsurprisingly there's a ton of amazing work in here. I'll read back through the thread, but any favorite tips/tutorials for the clueless would be very welcome as I haven't delved into this before.

Did you get a shipping notice? If so, who was it from? I filled out the thing with the people who are now shipping it but haven't heard anything.

Made some progress on Grinkrak's Looncourt. I really love this collection of minis, and I'm putting in 110% effort to make them look as good as I can!
