Help me build my PC: 2024 Catch-All

Any news yet on Nvidia 4090 today?
$2000?

edit: looks like its $1699 for 4090, $1199 for 4080 with 16 GB and $899 for 4080 with 12 GB

Wow, I mean it isn't as bad as expected but still really awful. The 3080 MSRP was $700 so that is a huge jump to $900 and $1200. I hope AMD eats them alive. Nvidia is still not reducing 3000 series prices, even to launch MSRPs!

Those prices are insane

4090: $1600
4080: $1200
Fake 4070: $900

My next PC might have hit a roadblock for a while.

Also the size of that card, what...

I like that, Fake 4070 ;P

So I guess 3090 tis should be ~$800 now? Who would get one over a Fake 4070 if it is priced any higher than that?
I mean, it has to go like this now:
Fake 4070 - $900
3090 ti - $800
3090 - $700
3080 - $600
3070 - $450?

It probably should be called worse.
It seems like it is not two 4080 cards with different RAM. They are entirely different cards, misleading customers being the only purpose of their name.

Have Nvidia ever pulled something like that before? At least there used to be be something like Ti, "Super" or whatever to slightly differentiate them.

I know people are both sidesing this between AMD and Nvidia. But just wow, Nvidia... How can you trust them on anything? They obviously have zero respect for gamers that built their business.

Gamers don't sustain their business any more though do they?

Guess I'm waiting for the AMD announcements in November then

On a positive note, the new DLSS appears to bypass cpu bottleneck if you have a lower end cpu with a high end card. So people may start making budget builds with an i3 and a 4090

What do you all want to bet that they'll be selling every one of these that they can produce at or above MSRP for the forseeable future?

I believe Jensen has actually been quoted as artificially limiting supply of the 4000 series to inflate pricing.
So sellers and scalpers may try but I just don't see it or see it working very long since RDNA3 is around the corner and without miners, the "gotta have" market is drastically smaller.

Plus, oh man, the used market is going to crash big time for the next several weeks.

Absolutely they have, but it's usually on the lower end.

The GTX 1650 had multiple iterations, not even counting the 1650 Super. There were versions on three different GPU iterations - the TU117 version, TU106 version, and TU116 version, the latter two featuring GDDR6 and the first one featuring GDDR5 VRAM. Then there was also a GDDR6 version of the TU117 one.

All of which NVIDIA simply called "GTX 1650".

Similar stuff was pulled with three versions of the GT 1030, the GT 710, and probably some others I don't recall.

Anyone else have pcpartpicker tab open and swapping filters for 6700, 6800 and 6650 for price drops?

Those prices are awful. EVGA bouncing makes even more sense now.

I hope AMD beats them up this time around. I don't really believe they will, but I'm going to hope for at least another month and a half.

Some in selling a 1080 in the trading thread. Is that a meaningful update if I have a 1070? Is it possible to put two cards in a PC and have them work together for IMAGE(https://c.tenor.com/sN_5F7jnD5oAAAAd/tenor.gif)

I don't think the bridge Nvidia thingie works with two different models, AFAIK you had to have two identical cards for it to actually function.

And I wouldn't think it is much of an upgrade either.
The good news is radeon 6600 is $250 and the 6650xt is $280. Either of those would be a big boost over a 1070, are newer tech, won't get much cheaper and won't break the bank.

That sound even better. I guess switching from Nvidia to Amd is as simple as popping one out and the other in? I assume AMD has some software to keep the card updated too?

I'm the one selling the 1080, and even though I'm speaking against my own interests here, no, you probably should not buy it as an upgrade over a 1070. You're looking at about a 15% uplift.

Some of the hidden worn edges are being revealed by tech streamers.
Apparently those prices are for the founders editions, so expect AIB's to charge $50-100 more for each skew.
Second, the 12GB 4080 does not have a reference cooler design so those are more than likely going to be priced over $1000 easily. (Yes, $1000 for a 70 series gpu)

It is very funny how quickly people picked up on the fact that they genuinely just renamed what should have been the 4070 and have just started calling it that anyway.

...and doubled the MSRP over last gen

Some of these designs are chonky!

Even if AMD is in the ballpark it won’t matter…Nvidiots will crucify them and your average gamer will hard pass.

I think we're fast approaching the point where we need to rethink the whole expansion card model of PC building.

Suspending a 4-slot monolith in the air, held up only by a PCIe slot connector and maybe a stilt, is just asinine. The next generation of PC cases need to lean hard into secure mounting of GPUs and connecting them to the PCIe slot via a cable.

The question is, how many Nvidia loyalists are still around? I know the ones that want the latest greatest hasn't diminished. But I'd wager the "Nvidia or Die" population has taken a hit.

And if AMD has a 7600xt that costs $450 but is faster than a 6900xt, I mean at some point, you just gotta go with reason.

That would be funny if gpus become mounted like HDDs and SSDs are mounted on PCIe cards.
It makes sense as one embiggens and the other shrinks.

It also makes sense with the increase in power requirements, and the non standard/split connections.

Those cards are still screwed into the back of the system, right? I suspect that the OCIE slot and i/o slot in back are the only design elements that can be counted on, so they pretty much have to design based on that...

I’ve not had an AMD card since the early 2000s. I’m now actively waiting for AMDs announcements in November.

I never thought I would see a GPU bigger than the 295x2 I had. Nvidia apparently took that personally.

I don’t have brand loyalty but I haven’t bought an AMD video card in over a decade and I keep remembering being pissed off at their drivers but my info is way out of date and I have zero recent experience.

These days I rely on DLSS (which may matter far less now due to FSR improvement) and I absolutely love Nvidia Broadcast mic noise reduction. Is there anything as good as Nvidia Broadcast out there yet? Last I tried things like Discord noise cancellation they were a poor approximation. I like how broadcast impacts my mic system wide and I don’t have to trust each application to have a solution.

My reaction to the price of 40XX was to think I’d just find a 3070 TI for now and wait for Nvidia to fix their pricing but maybe I should seriously consider AMD? I use a 2060 today (not super).
