NFL 2022: The Week 1 thread

Mmmm I dunno guys.

Even if Allen was an average QB without Diggs he's a still a truck of a human.

Ramsey got torched LOL

Bills Bills Bills

The silver lining of all this is that as long as Josh Allen keeps playing this way, his career won't be as long as other star QBs.

Please tell me that there's actually an episode of the new Quantum Leap where the main character leaps into Joe Montana. I mean if Scott Bakula's Sam Beckett can leap into Lee Harvey Oswald, Elvis, and Dr. Ruth, why can't this guy leap into other celebrities?

Yeah. Ryan Mink put it best

“If Lamar Jackson took as many hits as Josh Allen, people would lose their minds”

Apparently he gave up a perfect passer rating of 158 graded by PFF as in he was really really terrible.

I never understood the hype. Every time I saw him vs Rodgers/Davante they just fed on him. Unless I'm having selective memory.

I stand by what I said.

Seriously, tho, the Rams still have a ton of talent, and they won't play the Bills every week. (Next up: ATL). But that O-line is kind of a hot mess at the moment, and Stafford still makes 3-4 head-scratching throws each week.

As for the Bills, believe the hype. They looked great last night. Glad to see new OC Ken Dorsey (aka Cam's former QB coach) call such a good game.

I didn't watch a lot of Stafford last year, but is he really that bad at reads? He looked completely lost if Kupp was covered.

You know, a QB trucking defenders is bad enough, but maybe, just maybe, avoid stiff-arming with your throwing arm?

In an absolutely stacked AFC where the playoffs are guaranteed to be a bloodbath in a 17 game regular season where injuries absolutely WILL mean the difference between success and failure, using your star QB as a battering ram in week one is the boldest of bold choices.

The guy who is analogous to Allen's style of physical play is/was Cam Newton. And we saw the toll it eventually took on Cam.

Lamar has a leaner frame than those guys. It would be suicide for him to play that way.

You mean former 49ers QB and Bay Area native, giving his old team's division rival a little "Niners send their regards".

Cam Newton would like a word:

But, yeah, I had the exact same thought. GOTTA PROTECT THEM THROWIN' DIGITS!

That's not exactly how it played out. Cam's shoulder injury in 2018 was the result of TJ Watt spearing him. In 2019, Cam hurt his left foot first on a sack, then really hurt it when he got stepped on. (Can't recall if he was in the pocket or running.)

I won't say that all of Cam's battering ram tactics didn't wear him down over time (and Ken Dorsey knows that better than almost anyone). But the two big injuries that undid him were both ones that pretty much any QB could suffer at any time.

And to no one's surprise, Lamar is playing for $23M this year.

That wear and tear has an accumulative effect though, which includes becoming more prone to injury, and being prone to more severe and longer lasting outcomes when injury does occur.

So while you can rightly point out that any QB might sustain injury in those same situations, I don't think you can isolate the severity of those injuries from the wear-and-tear built up prior to sustaining them. The injuries may have been unavoidable, but the outcomes might have played out very differently.

Even a brand new ring couldn't produce any fans.

Stafford should get a refund for his surgery.

If you figure he would have had around a $48m/yr average on a new 5-year deal, he's lost $25m of earning power this season. That means the deal he signs next year needs to jump up an extra $5m a year ($53m/yr) just to break even.

And I think leapfrogging Aaron Rodgers' $50m/yr by $3m is a tall order. And leapfrogging it by enough to actually come out ahead seems extremely unlikely, unless Lamar brings home a ring this season.

I just don't get the endgame.

Allen Lazard is doubtful this week, so Operation: Replace Davante is not off to the best start.

They are totally losing the first game this year but hopefully not in such epic fashion as last year.

Uh . . . Sammy Watkins isn't hurt yet?

George Kittle told reporters he felt "significantly better" today, and will do "everything he can" to play on Sunday. So we'll see.

Well he began training camp on the Non-Football Injury list, so he's been getting his injury time in, don't you fret. He's just between injuries right now.

Here I'll make it easy for you guys.

"It's ok though, Christian Watson is back from missing the entire preseason recovering from knee surgery."

Everyone knows 4th round pick Romeo Doubs is the new Davante anyway.

What's even more impressive about that play was it was on Earl "Weird Kink" Thomas, who was no chump when it came to putting on the hits.

Hey, quick question:

What are you all using for streaming this season? We cancelled regular cable and I'm covered for TNF for (most) of the season via Amazon Prime.

But I can't seem to figure out the buffet options for getting the most coverage with one plan.

NFL+ only works on tablet/phone and won't have out-of-market games.
Sunday Ticket requires DirectTV (no-go).
Hulu+ requires an add-on of live TV (?).
YouTube TV seems to have everything (CBS, NBC, FOX, plus ESPN) but is $70/mo.
SlingTV will give me CBS, NBC, FOX but no ESPN for $35/mo, but can add ESPN for another $25 (?).

I really just need Seahawks to watch with my son, so I think I can get by with Sling for FOX, I'd miss maybe one CBS game (which we can go to a BWW or something), the sole TNF game on Amazon, and call it good?

What are you all doing?

I cut the cord last year and used an HDTV antenna to get the local Ravens broadcast. It gets choppy sometimes, but it's free.

When I was a poor grad student, I also used the HDTV antenna and I went to a bar for ESPN games. It can be affected by weather, though. Now I'm out of market so I splurge for Sunday Ticket. I'm really hoping the next NFL streaming service is not tied to another provider.

Otherwise, the basic Sling service seems like your best option. The Hulu plan with ESPN will probably cost you the same as as YouTube TV, I think it's $75/mo.

Making your child suffer through a Geno Smith offense? CPS has been alerted.
