DC Catch-All [Spoiler Zone]

Turns out the lyrics in the Joker sitcom theme song from the last Harley Quinn was one deep cut after another.

But they f*cked it up.

They f*cked up because the MCU has a lot of humour in it, and they tailor the level of humour to the movie and the characters. They also tailor the tone of the movie as well.

DC didn't. They had success with grimdark Batman, so they figured Grimdark Superman would work as well. (It didn't, and I still think Superman should have been 2 movies). So they put Superman and Batman together, and made it still grimdark (and stupid as well...Martha!!) and it didn't work. WW worked because it fit well with the character, and the relationships with the supporting cast. (Which is why WW84 sucked.) Aquaman was great because Jason Momoa, and Justice League was good because they started to get some humour in there.

But DC has never really learned how to do a combined universe. Only a Batman universe with other people showing up in it.

Lack of humour is more of a personal preference than an actual issue. They f*cked up because they didn't plan far enough ahead. They didn't have a plan beyond kicking another comic movie out the door expecting to rival ones from the MCU. They had 0 tie ins or branches to follow up that would allow for those moments of levity. Nolan's work onward were pulled from stories in the comics that had 0 room for levity intentionally and next no room to expand. Those comics made them millions and they expected the movie crowd to follow and enjoy the same, and the crowd would have probably followed if they had a path forward. The new Patterson Halloween story line has the protentional to do that but again they're f*cking up... and again and again it goes

The big yearly MCU events are there for a reason. Setting expectations. DCEU can barely agree with what ties in or not. What will or will not be made for a year. It won't change anytime soon with WB gumming up the works

God I love that they went there.

I'm so angry about this.

Do what I did and cancel HBOMax.

I'm waiting to see what the status of Harley Quinn is gonna be.

Fair enough. But the WBD CEO appears to want to burn all the bridges regardless of the long term profitability and/or industry side-effects. So YMMV?

Oh yeah I fully expect Harley Quinn to be cancelled, I just wanna be sure first.

I wonder how the DC sh*thead "Mr. Honey Boo Boo is Going to Focus on the Real Stuff" Brigade is taking this latest news? (Just kidding, I don't care, I actually still support a temporary cessation of Doritos and Mt. Dew production so they all starve to death, I just wanted to say that)

The Batman Sequel Gets New Life During Warner Bros. Bloodbath

"Projects are falling left and right but the studio is all in on Matt Reeves' Dark Knight vision."

All desire I had to see any DC movies/TV shows is gone so mission accomplished?

I see HBO as dead to me in less than a month unless they turn around hard.

HBO Max is much more than DC. But having that said, DC isn't going to be the only victim from the merger. I'm on a wait and see mode.

This seemed relevant

It's not lack of humour, it's lack of tonal appropriateness. Superman doesn't need to be funny, but it needs to be optimistic. Batman vs. Superman needs to have differing tonal approaches trying to reconcile over the course of the movie. Justice League needs to have Superman as lead boy scout and Batman as brooding grimdark and Flash as occasional goofball and and and. Taking the entire universe and grimdarking it is - and has - made it a relative flop. DC movies learned all the wrong lessons from Marvel's success.

They didn't take the entire universe grimdark, just those specific stories.

Even though there's a designation of DCEU, but there's nothing that makes it a universe which is my point.

f*ck YES. Best news all day.

Indeed excellent news.

Ya gotta wonder, given the sh*tstorm that Discovery has been causing over there, how many money trucks they had to send?

Especially given this bit: "Sources say the deal runs four years and Gunn will be exclusive to DC."

Oh well, I will take solace knowing we will likely get more of this:

Whether or not I will subscribe to the Discovery streaming platform when the time comes is another matter.

So GotG 3 is finished then?

...this news seems too good. I keep waiting to hear what the catch is.

That’s a lot of cooks.

Funny how two of the HBO Max DC projects that got spared involved him to one degree or another.

My own take on James Gunn going to DC!

Watched Black Adam.

It was enjoyable. Not a great movie like Civil War or Winter Soldier, not a crappy movie like Thor 2. Better than most DCCU movies, not nearly as good as WW. (Note, I don't count the Dark Knight trilogy as part of the DCCU)

Middle-of the pack movie that I enjoyed watching, and would watch it again.

The post-credits scene was good though.

Someone additionally pointed out that, while this decision seems to be a good one, it's also part of Mr. Honey Boo-Boo's pattern of replacing one woman or OC executive with multiple white men.

Marvel and DC? Gunn has an open relationship?
