Hidden Gems of Hulu and Hulu+

Prey was fantastic,. I actually thought it was about the videogame at first. Then when I heard people keep comparing it to predator I thought it had a predator type monster with a native american theme. Then no this is a full on in cannon predator movie and dare I say the best predator movie. I have to rewatch the first one but I'm pretty sure it is.

Orville New Horizons was pretty awesome across the board.
I haven't seen the last episode but it is good that they brought back some of the humor in it.

I'm sure nothing beats Arnold's dialogue. Or this:

Ok rewatched Predator 2 after a few decades. Was more entertaining than I thought but mainly because it's so of the era of action movies - TO THE EXTREME! The world is basically Robocop's where criminals have access to a massive arsenal of weapons. All the criminals are so cartoonish - but I bet when I originally watched it back in the 90s I thought those gangs were plausible. You have two actors from Lethal Weapon in this film (Glover & Busey) and its almost like a Lethal Weapon vs Predator film.

Also got some other late 80s celebs with Bill Paxton, Ruben Blades, and I had forgotten about Maria Conchita Alonso who was in so many movies around that time. Plus you got Robert Davi and Adam Baldwin popping up too.

It has one golden line Cop: "I'm a cop!" Old lady: "I don't think he gives a sh*t." which had me laughing.

So was actually enjoyable for a nostalgic trip back to over-the-top action films.

I also enjoyed Prey quite a lot. The last Predator movie I had seen was Predator 2 when it hit VHS back in the day. From what I can remember, I liked Prey better.

I also watched Prey this weekend, and enjoyed it. I loved the fact that much of the cast was Native American, and that the protagonist was female. The changes I'm seeing in the worlds of film and television have been a long time coming, and are hugely welcome. ("More of this please, greenlighters!")

Again, what struck me as I watched was how video game-like the film was. We were shown Naru modifying her weapons, levelling up her skills, solving puzzles... and on, and on. At points, I couldn't help thinking of Aloy in the Horizon series ('Predator: Forbidden West', anyone?)

Indeed, I do wonder about the extent to which successful IPs like Horizon Zero Dawn and Tomb Raider lay the groundwork for a sequel like this. At the least, I'd guess that those IPs appear on chart somewhere when a film like this is being evaluated by a studio.

By the way, I had absolutely know idea that 'The Predator' (2018) existed! Google tells me that it was released in the UK in September 2018. I'm going to assume that it's sh*t, but if it's also on Disney +, then I'll give it a watch too.

I have a kind of visceral dislike of it because of the reason given for why the predators are there.

Prey was good. Not great and certainly not as good as the original (which was the perfect 80s action movie). There wasn't a lot of action but I felt there was enough (my son thought it was a bit boring). Mostly, I felt that the main character's action scenes were just okay.

Spoiler:

And overshadowed by the brother's fight with the predator. It was also a bit odd that he was just like, I'm done here. Just going to wait to get killed.

Overall it was good enough that I'd watch a sequel (but hope it had more action).

We thought Prey was fantastic.

Finally started Only Murders... season 2. Seems great still.

Is that, like, the snuff version of Onlyfans?

It doesn't take much for me to really enjoy a Predator movie (which should tell you just how bad some of these entries are), but Prey had it all. My only issues would be tiny, nitpicky ones not really worth considering, just like the original movie.

Watched The Princess and liked it. The princess bulks at getting married by murdering everyone in her way. Fun popcorn nonsense movie. The actions scenes were filled with speed ups and quick cuts that were hard to watch at times. Old age is catching up with me and those scenes are like watching flashing lights to someone prone to seizures for me. Well maybe not that bad but it is draining.

The movie also had some bad transitions moments unless I blinked and missed something. At one point people are capture then the next moment they are walking about free as birds. Then one person is safely hidden but then they are captured. Minor things I guess.

In this movie the princess gets special training from master fighters from China. I wonder if in movies from China do the the heroes get special training from people in America.

That is my dad's favorite dad joke:
What do they call Chinese food in China?
-food ;P

Watched Prey last night. Pretty good!

Bugged me I couldn't remember where I knew the lead from. Looked it up this morning, and she was in Legion as Kerry (actress Amber Midthunder).

Feel better now that I've got that settled in my mind.

Wow, I didn't recognize her at all and I loved her in Legion.

I’ll watch anything with Joey King in it. Love her acting.

Watched The Killing Sacred Deer and liked it. I just watched Dual where everyone was deadpan and it is the same in this movie. Everyone acts weird to everything. I didn't know what this movie was about. I thought it was going to be a Native American movie about white people killing someone named Sacred Deer. Nope.

The movie is about a doctor that might have killed someone because he was drinking before a surgery. The doctor then takes the guy's son under his wing. Because of the oddest I thought he was molesting the kid. Nope, just a weird deadpan world.

The kid at some points decided to kill a member of the doctor's family. The kid also forces the doctor to pick who will die and if he doesn't pick someone they all die. The meat of the movie is how the family is dealing with this.

This movie didn't go where I thought it would. I wasn't even sure what type of movie this was. At time I thought it was a dark comedy. Other times maybe a thriller. Oh an Nicole Kidman is in it and I love her. And I don't know what the title means. I don't recall anyone being called sacred deer but maybe one of people that died was someone's sacred deer. Hmmm now that I think about the title probably refers to the dad the doctor killed but I could be wrong.

I give this movie 8 WTFs out of 10.

I started watching season two of Only Murders in the Building. I thought all episodes were out by now and was planning to finish it tonight … apparently I was wrong. Good news is I only have to wait a couple days to see the final episode of the season.

Yeah we mistimed it as well. Got to the last new episode on Wed. Doh.

Did the same thing. I could swear I saw stuff saying the last episode was out last week.

Prey was f*cking awesome.

Finally got to Prey. So damn good. I'd love to see that in a theater.

I'd agree with that. I read an interview after I watched it that the main actress did like 90% of her stunts. Which is impressive on the one hand for someone who hasn't really been in action stuff. But on the other, I think those limitations may have contributed to their needing to use so many cuts and speed-ups.

And comparing the stairway scene to the Oldboy hallway scene is maybe not a good expectation to set, ha (which they did in said interview).

The main henchlady's weapon being a whip also made for some odd action scenes. I don't think (given the above approach and limitations) it worked in terms of making the fight scenes engaging.

Not bad, but I wouldn't buy it on Blu-ray, if that makes sense.

I think I can see what you mean, but I don't consider those things as representing video games. If anything, those video games adopted cinematic tropes and approaches to narrative/storytelling. And that's a part of what makes some of those games excellent.

The movie was good at setting groundwork, then calling back to it, cause and effect. But Naru wasn't really leveling up, IMO.

Instead, her character is shown as being observant, and then later she'd act on those observations. And it showed her training to tell us this is a character who's been working towards a goal. But she's not like increasing hitpoints or unlocking a skill tree. It's lots of small Chekov's Adolini's guns, really.

On a certain level, Naru really isn't physically or skill-wise much different at the end of the film than the beginning, which makes her persistence when she fails and working around her limits more impressive, I think. And your character being basically just as strong (or weak) as when you started isn't something a ton of games do.

So while I personally don't agree and I'd say HFW, Tomb Raider, etc. didn't lay the groundwork on any measurable or tangible level, it's an interesting idea and maybe I'm wrong.

Well stayed up late tonight and watched it at midnight. Fantastic finish!

Yeah, it finished strong.

Agreed. Excellent season finale.
