My kids, 5 & 8, are terrified too. They've taken the test about 3x and usually a mix of downplaying it and bribery works. Their schools require a test and letter stating the student is negative if they take a sick day so it was unavoidable.
We've had to do two self-tests per kid each week for months here in Greece. Went very horribly the first time with our five year old. After that...we had her do hers with the other kids and everyone swabs their own nose. Granted...at no time do I believe her swab went in far enough, but I'm not forcing that again, ever.
All we have in Greece are the q-tip ones. Either you do it yourself, or a pharmacist does it for you and enters it into the state system. (Pharmacies are all owned by single pharmacists here in Greece...no chains at all. And most of them are open very limited hours, with only 2-3 in a big area open all day/night).
Since we pinned her down after an hour of trying everything else the first time, and it did NOT go well...just asking her, "do you want to do it yourself like your siblings, or do you want help?" has very sadly made her jump at doing it herself...
There may be a better thread for this, but anybody got recommendations for a Chromebook or similar ultra-low-budget laptop for a 7-year-old? Primarily for homework. Would be a bonus if it could run Minecraft and/or Roblox decently, but not a bonus worth paying a lot extra for.
On the off chance that you are still looking, MicroCenter has an HP Laptop on sale for $299. That's pretty much Chromebook price territory.
Thanks! His mom and grandmother did wind up finding something he really likes, utilizing the time tested savvy-shopper technique called "going way over budget and spending more than is in any way responsible to spend on a device for a young child who will almost certainly break it in a month."
(:
After about a dozen nasal swab tests over the last year my 6 year old can finally do then without having to hold him down, but it is still an ordeal. Where are people finding home salavia tests?
My child's elementary does spit tests every Tuesday.
Unrelated: I just attended her 2nd grade "graduation" this morning and at least 4 boys did the Naruto run to and from the podium. IS THIS A THING? The Naruto run? What are we teaching our children?! Oh the humanity.
Similarly, my daughter had her end of year thing today with all of the elementary classes and multiple first grade boys dabbed at the end of theirs. Kids are dumb.

My kid, 13, is an avid artist (and getting quite good) and yesterday she asked if she can get a tumblr account to seek out mutuals and to post her art. I dont know about tumblr as i have never used it and wanted to ask if anyone has any thoughts on it. Is at soul draining as other social media? What about horrific stuff (violence, etc)? I know social media in general is not great but if someone can talk me through it that would be great before i say no reflexively, that would be awesome.

I would be worried about the mutuals on any of the platforms.
Post may be fine if you (or someone) helps with privacy controls and what gets posted (meaning minimal personal info).
As for the content, they're all a horror show. I am so terrified as my kid moves into middle school next year and will start being exposed to even more of it.
Our daughter's daycare just sent out an email about how they're bringing in an expert from Homeland Security to check their security protocols.
And tonight at the grocery store I saw a dude with his 1yo in his arms and a f*cking Sig on his hip like he's Doc f*cking Holliday.
I live in a blue county.
f*ck this country.
Looking for recommendations for Choose Your Own Adventure or even Fighting Fantasy style books that are good/popular nowadays. I enjoyed those books when I was a kid but the two series seem to be mostly out of print or more expensive than I would expect nowadays. My daughter is 8 years old.
My nearby used book store almost always has a few choose your own adventures in stock (Half Price Books). Check one of those?
Difficult to track down in Japan unfortunately :(.
Amazon.jp has a decent selection of new foreign language books so I usually buy from there.
Quick check on when your child(ren) stopped wetting the bed? What age?
Google has basic advice but asking for real life experiences.
We followed the “Oh crap potty training” book method and did both night and day training at just over 3 years old. We only had a couple of accidents within the first six months, like when she was sick it is normal to backslide a bit at the beginning. Nothing since 4 years old for sure.

Ah bummer. I would offer to buy them and ship them to you, but I think flat rate shipping to Japan starts around $60.

Us too and hasn't peed in the bed since around 3 1/2. Still poops in her underwear pretty often at home though (4 1/2 now) and we are pulling our hair trying to find a combination of reward and punishment that sticks.

I have 4 Fighting Fantasy books I would be willing to ship to you if you like.

Vault of the Vampire
Scorpion Swamp

My 8 y/o daughter enjoys the original Choose Your Own Adventure books. There was some other series she also liked, but there weren't many of them, and I'd struggle to find them again... The oldies still seem to do fine, though.

I think this is one of those things where they are all different. Both of mine were out of Nappies at between 2.5/3 during the day but my eldest was dry through the night pretty soon after that. The younger BBK took 18 months and we were despairing for it every changing until I started going in at 5 to wake him and take him to the toilet which solved all the problems after that. Good Luck with everything.

That would be much appreciated but I wouldn't want either of us to burned by the shipping cost (I have been in the past shipping video games to folks in the US). Amazon's US site reckons they would charge me $14 to ship 4 paperbacks to Japan and, to be honest, I don't think I'd want to pay more than $15-20? Anyway, please let me know what you think, and what payment methods I can use.

The one we tried so far is:
Four More You Say Which Way Adventures: Dinosaur Canyon, Deadline Delivery, Dragons Realm, Creepy House
The problems I have with it so far are no pictures, like zero. Second, there are way fewer choices than you would see in a typical Choose Your Own Adventure. The first story, Dinosaur Canyon, literally has just 15 choices across 100 or so pages, and these are dense pages of fairly small font text. So far we've read Dinosaur Canyon and now we're part way into Creepy House. Creepy House is a bit better, a few more choices and one actual fail state so far. Anyway, I think the recommended age range was 8-12 which I hoped my daughter could slide into but I guess not.
The other series that caught my eye was:
You Choose: Can You Survive Collection (You Choose: Survival)
But after trying You Say Which Way, I think I'll need to research a bit more carefully before taking the plunge.

I'll hit up Canada Post and find out the cost to ship to Osaka and will let you know.

If it's cost prohibitive / falls through, I am also interested in these (particularly the last 3, as i don't think I ever owned those).

One of mine didn't stop until they were 6 or 7. They slept so hard that they just didn't wake up. I had to shake them hard to wake them up. Don't fret about it and dont make a big deal of it. Invest in rubber sheets that wash easily. They grow out of it / learn to wake up.
For those of you investing in 529s, I'm wondering --how much should I aim to stock away for kids' future education? I'm about 8-10 years out in the eldest attending, and the future cost of education seems extremely uncertain right now. I checked my alma mater's current costs and it's like 75k a year... I will discourage that option (private liberal arts). At the moment he's asking about community college (which I'd totally be fine with), but I think ideally would see him going to an in state public university. Wondering what others in similar shoes are thinking.
All I know is I didn't save enough, and could have saved more. Wasn't expecting costs to rise so high, and that they would both be living in residence.
So... Save as much as you can comfortably and/or help then understand that there will be some debt they have to assume, or that they need to save up job money for university. We always let them know that it would not be possible for us to cover everything, and student loans would be necessary. They both worked extra hard to get some scholarship money as well.
Volunteered to "coach" my 4 year old's first soccer team. First game on Saturday and first practice tomorrow or Friday depending on weather. Very nervous, but also excited. Been reading a lot of soccer stuff specifically for U4 to U6 and how to make it fun while teaching. Oh boy!
Good luck! I started my first coaching sessions with my 7 year olds rugby team two weeks ago. So far I’m loving it.
At that age it isn't really soccer. It is just herding cats.
Some will like it, some will cry, some will lay on the ground, some will try to Earth bend the ball.
Having fun is the main thing.
