Year of Trek

It's an homage with satire made with love. I could see why some folks would see it as a lesser Trek, but not me.

I consider it lesser Trek, but it’s still better than Disco and Picard.

Lowered X is clearly being made by people with a lot of affection for classic Trek, and I'm glad that it's bringing so much joy to people, but I just plain don't find it funny. Humor is subjective, etc. etc. etc. I attended a watch party once (same Discord server that did the TOS / SNW double feature) hoping that being in a social environment with other people would allow their enjoyment to rub off on me, and it had the opposite effect. Being in a chat with a bunch of people who were having a great time and just plain not feeling it was kind of a lonely experience. I dipped out early.

Reading this thread, I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed Picard (once I got rid of my "seek out new life and new civilizations" preconception).

Season 2 of Picard was "fine" but they made the central time travel plot so unbelievably convoluted to get everyone in to it that it made little sense. Very definitely had to switch your brain off a couple of episodes in and just go with it.

Same here. I loved it for the characters, and avoided considering the plot beyond a vague sense of what was supposed to be happening.

That's fair. I can get behind that, since the whole

Spoiler:

Rios stays in the past, which breaks all the rules regarding time travel

thing was so "easily" accepted by the rest of the crew. Among other things.

Forget it, Jake. It's Q.

Season 1 of Picard was spectacular with a sh*tty finale. Season 2 of Picard was OK with a spectacular finale. That's my official take on it.

I can get behind your take for Season 1, if you count everything after episode 1 as “the finale”. It started off extremely strong, and just devolved into fanservice.

And not even good fan service.

I'd be a little afraid to meet the fan who felt serviced by the Icheb cameo.

I mean it's fan disservice. I'm always going to be angry about how dirty they did Hugh. Always.

Action show set in sci-fi universe with lead actor now 80+ who is best known for his character's diplomacy...hmmm....

I don't know if I said it here, but before season 1 of Picard, I posted somewhere that Patrick Stewart having more say in how Picard was portrayed was a huge red flag for the series, because that's essentially what happened to the TNG movies, and how we got Action Picard for First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis, each getting progressively further from the character we had in TNG, and not in a, "the character developed and changed because of the story," way, but in a "the actor got bored playing this character and wouldn't come back unless we wrote him differently," way.

Patrick Stewart: I think this is a fantastic opportunity to say some things about real-world politics, like Brexit and such.

Also Patrick Stewart: I, an Englishman, would like my character to bang his Irish housekeeper who is half his simulated age and twenty times his chronological age.

Posting this here as it feels the most appropriate place.

Nichelle Nichols - Lt Uhura - has passed away.

Book review of her 1994 biography (she was 62)…covers a lot of ground: ‘relations’, MLK, racism: https://sliverofice.com/blog/the-man...

I just knew that the first response to this would mention Pulaski.

Then again, that line was exactly why I posted this comic.

Spoiler:

I actually kinda liked Dr Pulaski's short term as the CMO.

I completely forgot that Lower Decks starts next week!

Also, as someone in the twitter thread pointed out, this is the appropriate (and NSFW) #10:

OMG NEXT WEEK

I'm currently watching MST3K with my daughter. The movie is Ice Cream Man, starring Clint Howard and David Warner. I didn't see any tranya.

It also includes a handful of well-known people including, for some reason, Steve Garvey.

I enjoyed the 1st ep of S3 Lower Decks. 17 million scoville!

I am about 75% through Orville Season 3, and, man, episodes 5 and 6 were intense. Pretty great.

While I was quite impressed with season 3, it really felt like they were taking classic Trek Storylines, bringing them up to date with current issues and spinning them out to hour and a half long episodes. Granted they’ve explored the issues in somewhat greater depth than most single episode trek shows manage, but overall there’s a lack of originality to it that weighs it down.
