It's the preseason. Falcons fans are convinced Desmond Ridder is the future because he did well against Detroit's 3rd string. I think it's safe to say you shouldn't just Corral for his performance there and there are plenty of other reasons to judge him instead.
Corral on tape last year was so far from an NFL ready QB. I would expect this year to be an exercise in "learn how to run everything that's not an RPO" for him. Ideally he would be a complete non-factor in the Panthers QB drama this year, but who knows what pasta Rhule is going to throw at the wall in search of stickiness.
There is a lot of talk in Baltimore about this UDFA kid from Fort Valley State named Shemar Bridges. He had a bunch of catches in the preseason game against the Titans including a jump ball TD where he used every inch of his 6'3" to outheight his defender. A couple folks on Bleacher Report and elsewhere have identified him as one of the surprises of the UDFA class.
I looked up his Pro Day numbers (wasn't invited to the combine) and they look pretty unimpressive. A 4.66 40 time and a really pedestrian cone drill. His vert looks good as does his wingspan, but on the whole, his measurables reveal why he went undrafted.
I went to his college tape and though he had a bunch of really nice contested catches where he plays like a big guy playing big, there were also a bunch where he belly caught passes rather than trusting his hands. Also, being a big guy with a slow 40 time translates into slow off the break and cuts.
I liked what I saw on Thursday, but I also see why he got skipped by so many scouts. I want to see what else he produces in preseason. Hopefully against a first team defense.

Corral is simultaneously a referendum on Matt Rhule's abilities as a talent evaluator (poor) and as a talent manager (also poor).
Also, after three weeks in camp and OTAs, etc, Corral's floor should be "shows promise" instead of "objectively terrible."

The Collective Bargaining Agreement contains specific rules restricting football meetings and other activities prior to the launch of the offseason program. Surely, however, players (like highly-paid quarterbacks) welcome the intrusion on their quiet time because, for them, most coaches and executives would expect that they have no quiet time. Garoppolo, by all appearances, simply took full advantage of the fact that the 2011 CBA gave players much more of an offseason than they ever before had.
Still, coaches want franchise quarterbacks to be all about the franchise, all the time. It will definitely give someone pause, especially when it comes to making a significant investment of cash and/or trade compensation for Garoppolo.
Yeah, his trade value now is basically nonexistent.

Looks like the football gods are once again gearing up to wreck a bunch of 49ers at the start of the season by having them play on the road on a trash playing surface.
Bears kicker Cairo Santos has described the current state of the Soldier Field surface as so bad that it's "reckless" to have games played on it.
Apparently it was bad enough that the MLS team that also plays in the stadium moved their home game, because the field wasn't going to pass MLS standards. Which apparently are more demanding than NFL standards, given the Bears and Chiefs played preseason week 1 on it.
On a good note, the Niners may have found themselves yet another 5th round gem.
Samuel Womack III looks like he has the inside track on the team's starting nickel job. He's been the best nickel in camp, and followed that up by intercepting Jordan Love twice in preseason week 1. He's a short but long-armed press corner, who fell in the draft because of that shortness and because he played in the MAC.
For the Jaguars, I'm going with Ryan Santoso, the kicker version of Jared Lorenzen. He's 6'5" and 270 lbs of former Minnesota Golden Gopher.
Update here, the Jags cut the other kicker that was in this race, Elliott Fry, with an injury designation.

Wow. Apparently, Dave Gettleman was so fixated on drafting Saquon Barkley no matter what, that he refused to pick up the phone when Denver called. Elway apparently loved Darnold, and after the Browns went with Baker at #1, he was looking to make a monster offer to move up to #2.
Denver was sitting at #5, so the deal would have been at least #5, the next year's 1st, and at least one other pick, probably a 2nd or 3rd either that year or the next. And probably more honestly, if Elway was so motivated to move and everyone knew Gettleman would have to be given an offer he couldn't refuse to move off of Saquon. Hell, the Giants might have still gotten Saquon at #5.

This goes to one of the arguments PFF makes a lot: your talent evaluation is never as good as you think it is. Having more picks and taking more stabs at it is the most reliable way to get talent, and conversely, trading a bunch of picks in order to draft one guy is more often than not a losing proposition that will look foolish in hindsight.

Seems that Rhule is holding a tryout for centers, too: It's the newcomer (Bradley Bozeman, a three-year O-line starter with the Ravens) vs the returnee (human turnstyle Pat Elflein). But Bozeman got hurt during practice today so maybe the competition is over.
Also, Bozeman has struggled some in camp. I don't know what's up there.
I can put on some weight and play center. Granted, 6-foot-zero is a little short for the position, but my 32.5" arms and 9.75" hands are pretty much right at the mean average for the position!
I shudder to imagine what my 40 would be at 305 lbs though...

Reports out of Seahawks camp are that after years of lackluster drafts, Schnieder/Carroll finally hit paydirt this year, and the offensive line actually looks... good? Now that Lock has Covid Geno will have plenty of time to check down, at least.
Reddit had a post yesterday asking about which NFL players are the undisputed "best" at their position. As in, the guys that essentially have no debate about them being #1 at their spot.
The consensus roughly landed on 4 guys that qualify:
DT: Aaron Donald
PK: Justin Tucker
FB: Kyle Juszczyk
OT: Trent Williams
Quenton Nelson was brought up, but his fall-off last year pulled him back down into the pack.
Some argued for Tom Brady, but a different QB having back-to-back MVPs threw water on that one.
Jalen Ramsey got some mentions, but guys like Jaire Alexander and AJ Terrell are too close for that argument.
Matthew Slater came up and might have the strongest argument to be added to the list, but "special teamer" isn't really a position, even if the Pro Bowl treats it like one. When you look at the Patriots depth chart, you'll find Slater under the wide receivers.
