The Some Like It HOT TAKES thread

The type of people who value animals over humans have long fascinated (frustrated) me, in my experience it's mainly two types with overlap:

1. People who have been betrayed by fellow humans, and love animals for their predictability (even in their cruelty animals are indifferent and mostly predictable)

2. People who like something they can control, unsurprisingly these do not tend to be cat people

More on the hot take side would be my thoughts on the dark origins of wanting to have a pure-bred dog, including certificates, lineages etc. In other words: animals have to suffer because we cannot let go of our racist delusions.

I am surrounded by people who have told me they'd choose to save a puppy over a baby. Some of them I think really believe it.

I require more details from this scenario to make a final decision. Am I returning the creature to it's owner or is this an adoption scenario where I have to take care of it for the rest of it's life? What am I saving it from? I assume I can try to save both but one may need to take priority. How many stairs are involved? What age/breed is the creature? Can it follow basic commands?

I gave a simple scenario. A puppy and a baby in a river and only enough time to grab one. Nobody has said baby so far.

I'm still waiting for someone to also respond to the fact that apparently it's fine that dogs are good for being shot at, especially when they "don't know how to act".

Unless I'm misreading the response?

FWIW, I ignored it because it's just some dumb edgelord sh*t.

In that case I know I would try to save both but fail. Who got saved would come down to who was the least wiggly at that time.

I'm actually fine about most breeds, and an see the justifications for it RE: temperament, and more predictable health outcomes, however, I am still fervently anti-all Brachycephalic dogs.

The only game that can dethrone Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines will be an HD remake or remaster of it. All other games will fall short.

Bloodlines is a great example of why modern games with floating waypoint/quest markers are garbage.

I fully expect Bloodlines 2 (if it ever happens) to ruin the game with that.

I wonder if I'll enjoy Bloodlines 2 as much if it's not just as clearly 75% done as the original was.

Spoiler: *

Except Zelda 2: Adventure of Link. That game's weird.

Do Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks count as 2D? From memory of the two, only the boat sections of Phantom Hourglass actually plays on a 3D plane. If so, they severely drag down the average. Like, 2D Zelda's have a bit of hit and miss, but 3D Zelda's have been all varying degrees of hits - no misses.

So I've been playing through some Zelda games recently. As it turns out, I've only beaten about half of them, and I intend to work on improving that metric. What led me to post my earlier hot take was mostly in reference to me working my way through Minish Cap (which I finished a few weeks ago) and Skyward Sword HD (which I just now finished).

For me, I think it doesn't come down to the 3d-ness of the game, but rather the exceedingly wonky controls that those games seem to all have - camera controls for the most part. I've only played a few minutes of Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, but I suspect I'm going to hate touchscreen-stylus movement controls, even in the more "2d" areas of the game.

For whatever it's worth, aside from the controls in Skyward Sword (camera and sword-waggling, specifically), I thought it was a pretty fine representation in the Zelda franchise. But tight controls are kind of a serious sticking point for me in action/adventure games like these.

For what it’s worth if you run custom firmware on a DS or 3DS you can find patched versions of Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass that use dpad controls.

Oh reeeeeally? I might have to do some investigating. Thanks for the heads-up.

A modded 3DS is a wonderful thing.

That's true, but I'd rather use my Steam Deck. DS emulation on the Deck is super awkward.

Sour cream. Overrated. Mostly pointless.

Easily substituted with plain Greek yogurt.

Whipped cream is pointless.

Sour cream is the secret ingredient in the best donuts and coffee cakes. Yogurt works in a pinch but it ends up a little denser.

Greek yogurt is gross and smells like feet.

Nope.

Dried milk powder, apparently.

Food that is so spicy it hurts to eat is pointless bravado. I love a good afterburn, but I want to be able to actually enjoy it, not just taste pain.

Generally I agree, but sometimes I want to fight through the pain a bit to taste the food.

Works great in cheesecakes as well

What a trifling opinion.

There’s a whole “sour cream sucks” conversation and not one hipster has wandered in to mention labneh or crème fraiche?

I….will be that hipster.

Agreed, but still broadly with Phishposer, at least RE: "stunt sauces" made with whatever godawful mutant pepper they've devised now that is a literal threat to your health.

A good hot sauce, to me, makes my mouth burn, my nose run, and still has me going back in for another bite because it's so good.

Yup. Different people will have different thresholds for that, but that kind of nuance doesn't belong in the hot takes thread.

I am rising above a hot take / stealing hot sauce joke but it is very hard. Away to the dad joke thread to try and cleanse my punning need.

Catie's Classroom is a million times better than Blippy. Fight me.

I don't know what Catie's Classroom is, but I agree because practically anything has to be a million times better than Blippy.
