Help me build my PC: 2024 Catch-All

Yeah Rob, but then you recommended a $500 CPU.

Well I wasn't sure what your budget was for a CPU. You could easily do a 5600X for around the same price as the 12th gen CPU you mentioned.

Or 5700X if you are willing to spend 50 bucks more, and get some extra cores.

Either one of those would be great.

Except that benchmarks for AMD next gen just released. The 7600x is 22% faster than a 12900k in single core...
If you weren't already planning to replace the mobo, I'd say forget it. But since you are already going to replace the mobo, then I'd recommend either going super cheap or waiting for next gen might really be worth it.

Waiting it definitely on the table, at least until the current stuff is discounted.

The next couple of months could be very interesting with regards to pricing...

I've also heard the new stuff is going to be power hungry! Or maybe that's just the GPUs. Probably wouldn't hurt to wait.

AFAIK the only power guzzling offender will be Nvidia.

Okay, final build! I'm too impatient to wait for Fall, and the Ryzen discounts are pretty nice right now. Record low price, etc. Paying a premium for the mini-itx motherboard, but the portability is worth it for me. One funny sticking point is I wanted to use the front USB-C on the case, which the GIGABYTE B550I AORUS PRO AX lacks so I had to go another way.

I also wanted to do an AIO install for the first time, so I'm paying a premium for that too since quiet is more important to me than saving a few bucks. There's some nice fan options these days, but I couldn't resist THE TUBES.

- Ryzen 5600X (the 5800x was interesting, but I have my Macbook Pro 14 for video/audio work, and this is a gaming box.)

- ASUS ROG Strix B550-I motherboard

- Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB

- NZXT Kraken X53 240mm AIO

- NZXT h210 case

Existing PSU, SSD's and stuff will transfer over. Nice. Shipping, tax, etc. about $650 us.

Thanks for all the input folks! Really gave me an excellent starting point.

Congrats! When does everything arrive?

Not soon enough, I would think.

This coming Friday I would think.

It's not too late to change your mind and get this Aquarium PC case

Build done. Ended up going with the 5800x (discount was so good). Pics on Twitter!

Wow, you did just squeak that 2080ti in there
Congrats!

Look at that beautiful AIO mounted with nice, even pressure across the CPU.

Mice: The Anker Vertical wireless served me well but it’s been sporadic even with full batteries. I went with a smaller Roccat Burst. Hopefully it just works and doesn’t hurt my wrists.

Evoluents usually work flawlessly for about 3 years or so, with everyday use...

Not sure where I saw this video but I'll drop it here. It interested me since I'm still running a GTX 1080.

Conclusion is, if you still have a 1080, wait and hold out for the next gen, which is where I'm at. I think I said something similar to the following a couple years ago: I'll be waiting until next year to look at upgrading.

The 6600 is a big jump from my rx580 but even I am probably holding out for a 7600xt.
The 6600 is probably bottoming out where it won't get any/much cheaper than $250.
But if the 6700xt gets down to $350, I may have to snag it.

I remember someone asking if 10GB 3080's still existed in any reasonable quantity and not being fully confident in saying plenty of them are still getting made. Well, I shouldn't have doubted my instincts.

I was in Microcenter yesterday.

They have over 100 10GB cards at original MSRP just sitting in the local store now

Asus, EVGA, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.

Shelves of 20+ 10GB cards from all of them, sitting right next to similar numbers of 12GB cards, Ti's, 3090's, etc.

And noooooobody buying, which I find pretty hilarious. Nvidia eating sh*t right now is a small joy but I'll take it before they finally release the new lineup and manufacture some magical reason to inflate pricing by huge percentages again.

I haven’t bought my PC yet thanks to a delay in some of the funding for it. Now I’m wondering how long I should wait for ‘next gen’ CPUs or GPUs to come through.

That plus the cost of living crisis here in the UK probably meaning I’ll need the money to pay my energy bills in any case.

Its kind of in flux ATM.
Nvidia still has a ways to come down with current gen but they are still dragging.
AMD current gen reductions have seemingly hit bottom on the low end. Many speculate that the 6600 won't go lower than $250 but there is a rumored price cut happening in September.

It still makes zero sense to buy high end right now as they are still inflated. And within 3-6 months next gen will make current high end moot in price performance.

If the 6700xt hits $350 (currently at $400 after rebate) I may have to grab it. If the 6600 miraculously goes down to $200, well that will probably indicate that the 6700xt will be $350 but in case it doesn't, the 6600 is a steal. (obviously depending on what you currently have...)

I just don't see Nvidia coming down enough to warrant purchase. They will always carry an Nvidia premium and they need to choke on it.

C'mon Sept 27!

I am ready to build a new rig.

It will be interesting to see all the early adopters versus those that are waiting for Q1 and the rumored Zen4 X3D variants. (leaks are that its rev 2 of X3D that fixes some of the limitations of rev 1 to allow them to clock higher)

It will also be interesting to see if Nvidia makes even small pricing cuts which would trigger bigger AMD cuts.
The 6700xt already has 1 model selling for $380 with a bunch more listed at $410. They are primed to hit $350 at which point, BAM, sold for me! But then indecision steps in because the 6800 non xt is a big boost over the 6700xt and might be too worth the extra $50-75.

I think I'm waiting for (any) black friday deals on the new gen, and figure I should be safe to a AM5 gen 2/3/4 upgrade path later. For now, I want that new shiny. Still rocking an old 5820k paired with a 3080 (I got on pricing error) and am seeing definite bottle-necking.

I am still barely hanging on with AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core Processor 3.50 GHz, with my 2060 Super RTX.

I can't even upgrade to Win11 with my current set up.

You may want to consider getting a huge boost from a ryzen 5600 now and use it for 9-12 months while waiting for availability and/or sales on the 7000 X3D chips in the future. Maybe you can piece meal the parts, looking for black friday type deals on DDR5, and cheaper mobos will also be out by then. (so you have a choice of spending $150 instead of $300 for the ones available at launch)

I’ve been thinking similar myself. I’m still using an i7 4770k and RTX 2060. Going to a Ryzen 5600 would be a big jump and they are really cheap right now. I could grab a 3060TI as well if I can’t wait for 40XX.

I've been without a PC for awhile and am looking to get back in. I'm on a super tight budget as im just a med student living off loans. looking to scrap together whatever i can. Does anyone here have spare parts they're willing to throw my way? looking to keep the thing under 500

Laughs with my i5-4670K, 16GB DDR3 RAM and GTX1060....

Its not a bad option for you either. Just note to tack on $60-120 for an AM4 mobo with ryzen 5000. (which won't work with ryzen 7000 AM5)
