No Man's Sky Catch-All 2.0

I picked this up recently after having picked up a Quest 2 and had a couple other buddies that were playing. They stopped but I've got about 60hrs in now questing for ships that I've seen posted on the reddit NMSCoordinateExchange thread, base building and just general exploring seeing what the next planet holds.

Co-op is true co-op when you join someone's server your character, inventory and ships gets teleported to the system they are in and you can explorer and base build together. You then create a local location save in their world when you exit, and the next time you can go back to your own world.

I enjoy the VR option of the game especially in cockpit, but the controls are too imprecise for base building so I've been playing non-VR lately, it is also easier to just bounce in and out of the game without the headset step.

I'll update with my NMS friend code later, haven't really delved into the community events much but they sound fun.

Definitely check out the Galactic Hub and Alliance of Galactic Travellers. Both are wonderful communities.

I played some with my brother this weekend and was delighted to learn that the old "Play 6 hours to get to the Nexus, THEN you can coop" guide is out of date. Like Redhwk describes, we were able to start from minute 1 together and do the tutorial side by side. We both started in VR (tethered Quest 2's) and both abandoned it for pancake mode after the first session. The performance was pretty bad. We didnt do much to try and optimize that other than drop all the graphics settings.

Its a little quirky, playing coop together. The game doesn't really understand group ownership of a base very well. For example he placed the base computer. I built a teleporter in the base, but the game considers the base HIS, not OURS, so I can't actually teleport to it (The game always says "Downloading", seems to be a bug multiple people have seen with no known solution) I ended up having to make a mini-base 1km away so that I can travel there. I am guessing I will have to keep doing this, which is pretty annoying.

I initially had the same issue with my buddies base, couldn't TP to it. Once I had got that mission done on my own instance though I was able to use his TP in our multi games.

My NMS code is Z382-6QBF-525ZM

yet another another another content update dropped today and brings overhauled space combat, pirate activities, and new ships and locations:

Looks amazing! Especially those new ships and combat pilots. Looking forward to the Xbox drop. I am still working on the Living Ship Quest, but getting close to the end of that, and building out settlement buildings.

There's a problem for the next few days of pirates mobbing player bases, so maybe wait until it's patched. If you're on PC.

Those new solar sail ships alone make me want to reinstall.

I wish NMS had a new game plus thing going. I like starting a new character for updates, but it's a huge drag feeling the pressure to spend hours just system jumping to buy inventory slots.

That’s where I like the expeditions. They really jump start you with items and upgrades. I just wish they weren’t time limited.

New expedition has dropped, runs for the next six weeks. Plays into the just released free pirate expansion, with an outlaw theme.

There are Twitch drops running for the next week or so as well if you want free stuff. 3 hours a day nets you decorative items, skins, pets, ships, etc.

Endurance Update- revamped/expanded freighters and fleet mechanics, larger and more diverse asteroid fields, improved space visuals, new space encounters

Downloaded to the Xbone and checking it out now!

Psyched for a new expedition! The last one was stressful with the permadeath, looking forward to a more chill experience this time. The freighter stuff and the new space details looks incredible.

As an aside, there’s a No Man’s Sky Twitch campaign right now, drops include Class A multi tools and Class A ships, having these in your no man’s sky inventory can give you a nice leg up on doing the expeditions. Lots of cosmetic drops too.

How does the Twitch stuff fit in?
Nevermind, I think I figured it out.

Watch the NMS streams that have drops turned on, connect your NMS platform to Twitch, then collect the drops in game in the anomaly from the vendor who also sells items for quicksilver.

Thanks for the heads up on the Twitch drops!

Yes, thanks for the heads up

Got two of the ship drops from Twitch, and they are nice. Love all the new freighter stuff! I made a little glass tunnel and some exterior walkways, so cool! Almost got a rebel ship, too.

The cape is really cool, but I do see a lot of Moon Knights.

There is so much to do in this game that it is a bit overwhelming, but man is it fun to fly around with the different ships.

How long does it take to get to the point where you’re able to build a base? And separately, a fleet?

My biggest problem with most crafting/survival/exploration games is just how long it takes to do cool things.

I perceive the time investment as giving incentive to explore and upgrade your gear. It gets you moving around the galaxy and facing challenging environments. This is a game where your progress snowballs; it does not proceed linearly. Once you can get enough money and set up a teleport portal (my version of beginning a base), the trading circuit can make you tons of money pretty quickly. In the course of which you'll visit many different types of systems, with tons of quests, new ships to buy, animals, plants and geology to discover, and gear to upgrade. After you get your first base going - mine is no longer functional since I built it before one of the big power revisions - you will want to start selecting systems and planets for other ones. Somewhere in there you get your frigates, which have their own missions you can send them on and they can be upgraded too. And that's all outside of the event seasons, which offer one-off experiences, and main questline from the original 2.0 update.

If you play this as an ongoing pve instead of "Oh, I built a base, I'm done" you'll have a blast. If you demand more than just random environments - which is actually more realistic than not, I believe - then you might want to wait for Starfield, or play the X series or something else like that.

Everyone's got their own tastes. Basically, for me, "cool things" are earned, starting with surviving the first 20 minutes. Once you have that down, everything after is earning upgrades in different situations and figuring out how to get them.

Maybe I've missed something over the years of this game, but is there an easy way to know which system you want to hop to? It seems like it need to go to the galaxy map. Which means in ship and in space, which is annoying when I'm planning.

Beginning base building starts pretty early, although your access to parts in the beginning is pretty limited. Just basic walls, lights and some technology pieces. You'll get your first freighter after 3 to 5 warps to other systems, and you can start getting frigates almost right away, I think. Less than 10 hours, I think.

The next expedition is coming very soon and will focus on the freighter and freighter base, that would be a really good time to check it out. Expeditions give tons of good rewards pretty quickly, and convert to regular normal mode saves after the time is up.

Part of the appeal is the various meandering approaches you can take; I started up a new game recently, and the first distress signal I found was a C-class Hauler that was worth about ten million credits when I sold it. That let me buy a bunch of Drop Pod Data to pretty quickly upgrade my Exosuit inventory, which is always one of the annoying things at the start, and it helped me jump past those slow parts of the game.

One tip if you want to make money; save your nanites for S-class multitool Scanner upgrades. You'll start making ridiculous sums of money just scanning plants and animals, and you can build up a decent little chunk of change so you can buy a better ship. It's an easy way to regularly earn some income, and, if you scan all the animals on a planet, there's a big bonus chunk of nanites. Secondary tip; underground creatures seem to not spawn regularly, so, if I'm on a planet with those, I generally don't bother to try to scan all the creatures because it's a pain.

One thing for me is I really don't like base building at all and I play NMS for the exploration aspect. I bounced hard off Fallout 4 because it kept wanting me to upgrade a town for a bunch of NPC dorks I didn't care about. I will say with the latest update being able to just drop cool rooms onto a freighter it's much better because I no longer have to care about planetary bases at all, ever again.

The new freighter focused expedition is live!

So I've picked this up with the sale surrounding the release of Endurance, as a very therapeutic alternative to Fell Seal which I played for the various gaming clubs.

I'm not very far in and it's great, if a little directionless which I can struggle with as I get to grips with it all. Base building would probably work better if there was somewhere I found I'd fancy building a base at.

However, I do have a quick question - is it worth just doing the expedition before it expires? I know you can get stuff if you complete it to bring into other saves, but I'm not sure if it's worth learning a whole bunch of stuff to do with freighters before I really learn the game, or just carry on and try and come back to it later. Assuming the game will let me.

I think it’s worth it. The items/nanites/credits it gives you are pretty nice, and it does a good job of helping you through the milestones. You can trash and restart your freighter base when you’re done, and you’ll have a great head start on the game as a whole. One tip, try to complete the optional milestone that requires you to visit someone else’s freighter base, it gives you a complete portal glyph set which can be a big help if you want to portal to specific ships/multi tools or locations down the road.

I am actually of two minds about this expedition in particular. It does not do a good job of introducing you to many of the game's mechanics like some earlier expeditions, or a normal game. A normal game starts with a lot of quests for early mining, crafting, installing studf in your ship and multi tool, and other things, but the expedition only provides help for the freighter stuff, and kind of assumes you know the basics already.

So, it depends on your tolerance for looking up stuff online or in the game's help system. All of the early game quests should become available when you convert to a normal save, but in the meantime you may flounder a bit or not know what you are missing.

Then again, you can get a lot of help here, or PM me, or ask questions in a bunch of Discord servers.
