[Discussion] Mass Shootings - Yeah, we need a thread just for this...

This year is the deadliest year ever in terms of mass shootings. In a political climate of polarization, it becomes harder to suss out legitimate information from the misinformation propagated by those with political agendas. Complicating this more is the continual resistance of 2nd amendment advocates to allow for political talk surrounding these massacres. This will involve political discussion to see if there are ways we can all agree might be good ways to prevent mass shootings.

This discussion should involve the details of any current, or future mass shooting, and how they compare to past mass shootings. How are they the same? How are they different? Do gun laws have an impact? Does the race of the shooter affect how we treat them? What makes one a hate crime and one an act or terrorism? Are these shootings the price of freedom?

Well there are teachers with guns...they just happen to be gainfully employed in shooting ranges, police academies and the armed forces!

Another angry white kid, more dead people

Shooting at Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, leaves 6 dead and more than two dozen wounded

Shooter unsurprisingly turned out to be another Trump supporter. This one was a right-wing rapper. His youtube channel was just pulled down but one of his music videos was a hand-drawn animation of him shooting up a school. Definitely no red flags there.

Sounds like someone who should have MORE guns!
And while we're at it, let him have all the ammo he desires too...

Spotify hasn’t pulled his account yet and I listened to a couple of his songs. It’s not as superficially propagandist as some self-described right wing musicians but one song does reference Ben Shapiro, which makes two mass shooters that have directly mentioned him by name in their work.

Eh, until the shooter is off the streets and in custody, I'd be wary of jumping to righteous posturing on which side is to blame.
Anyone remember the reddit detectives "solving" the identity of the Boston bombers?
There's a lot of misinformation out there at all times.
Maybe it turns out to be correct, but often is not or not quite.

It’s possible the shooter could be someone other than the one the cops named, but in terms of “sides” it’s statistically pretty safe to blame one side in particular.

Arrested after a car chase and somehow wasn't shot by police 60 times unlike another person who was unarmed and who hadn't just shot dozens of people.

No word if the police got him some Mickey D's or Wendy's.

I'm not going to say that all Trump supporters are crazy, homicidal motherf*ckers, but there sure seem to be a f*ckload of them.

Can’t believe we are at the point where we have to be specific about which 4th of July mass shooting we’re talking about.

Edit: ah, looks like it might just have been someone taking a couple shots at some cops.

Still, people running in panic in Philly is not good.

Apparently something happened in Orlando too, people got spooked, maybe thought fireworks were gunshots, and a huge mob evacuated.

Celebrating last weekend felt a bit like throwing a birthday party for your racist relative in hospice

So how many mass shootings did we have yesterday?

One for sure in Chicago. Philadelphia still under investigation.

Orlando, Harrisburg and D.C. were people being panicked by fireworks. At least what I've read so far.

Well, I mean, we still haven't cleared "The cops shot a kid" yet.

The editor's note on the article is that the sound of all the children screaming from inside the classrooms has been removed.

Gotta use that hand sani! Kids have so many germs.

Cops only actively shoot kids that look like my son.

I don't know. It was primarily a brown school.

Edit: Nevermind looks like a prank or mistake in downtown Chicago today.

That chicken sh*t is classic deflection

I suspect some of those parents are either law enforcement or have family in law enforcement they can't exactly talk to at Thanksgiving if they say what needs to be said. So beating up on the media seems like the only thing they have available to them.

They're angry because they released the video before the families got to see it - never mind that the shooting was almost two months ago - and now they're screaming "OMG spoilers" as if nobody had any idea that a video about a school shooting would involve someone going into a school and shooting.

"We must blame them and cause a fuss before somebody thinks of blaming us!"

Spoiler:

Blame Canada (or, since it's Texas, blame Mexico)!

Here we are again. Good guy with a gun lets three people die in a mass shooting before becoming an overnight ring wing hero

Intentionally worded to point out the cruelty of the right’s rhetoric.

It’s disgusting but yet completely on brand that this mass shooting is literally what their American dream looks like..sure innocent people got killed but wow did that good guy with a gun save the day! If the GOP could have 20 of these tragedies a day they would be ecstatic.

Fun Story: Republicans used to be pro-gun control until the NRA took over the party because they wanted to keep guns out of the Black Panthers.

Stay classy my friends.

Whoo! A potential future star may have been born! The Greenwood, Indiana mall good samaritan! I can see it now! The man's face superimposed on rambo flags!

Kidding aside, glad he stopped the bloodshed but I just couldn't resist the absolute possibility of this scenario happening.

Don't underestimate the ruling recently where a "good Samaritan" ran down his ATM robber and shot at him missing completely and killing an innocent 9 year old girl. Since he was in the act of defending his property apparently that's 100% a-ok to kill someone by accident.
