Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

I can't wait for this work day to finish, so I can binge The Umbrella Academy season 3.

Too many series!

I can recommend the mini series "Clark". It's the story of one of Sweden's most well known criminals, Clark Olofsson. He's the guy that the term Stockholm Syndrome was coined after. It's well acted, slick production and has a lot of humor to it. I am a bit too young to remember the robbery, but being Swedish I do have a bit of a bias towards Swedish content.

Yeah, the people who still go "a billion services and there's nothing to watch" cannot make me roll my eyes fast enough. They are clearly living in a nostalgia bubble where they forget that the old days were usually along the lines of where you basically spent your Friday night deciding if you were going to watch Full House and Step by Step or two episodes of COPS.

What is so common these days are people who go "what do you mean you haven't watched it yet?!?!" with my response being "I literally have 50 series ahead of it", or me browsing through one of my services and going "Whoa, this has that actor I like and sounds interesting....and apparently has had 3 seasons already?"

I'll get paralysis about starting a new established series sometimes because I don't think "this sounds interesting" or "so many people recommend it." I think "this is a 40+ hour commitment" and then scroll through the movies for 30 minutes before firing up YouTube.

I've gotten to where I don't feel I've got the emotional stamina to commit to getting invested in something with a payoff so I either watch YouTube or something I've already seen before.

I'm in this post and I don't like it

I am here with everything these days, shows, movies, games, books, etc. It sucks.

I just got to mental state where I could start watching Ozark again. Season 3 came out right around lockdowns starting and I just couldn’t emotionally watch it.

Now I’m a few episodes from finishing season 4 and enjoying it- but very glad I didn’t force myself to watch during lockdown.

Good for you.

I loved the show and also bailed on it during COVID. I still don't feel I'm up to watching it so it just taunts me every time I open Netflix.

So I watched Interceptor instead and it was 99 minutes of absolute trash staring a woman I thought was the jacked doppleganger of June Diane Raphael who couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag. I thought it was a vehicle for some MMA star I didn't know, but it turned out to be Elsa Pataky, Chris Hemsworth's wife.

Go on.

Damn.

Also was in at least one of the Fast & Furious movies as a Brazilian cop or something.

I thought all that was obvious from the trailer. I didn't waste my time with it.

"Or something?" Elsa Pataky's Elena appeared first in Fast Five, and appeared in 6, 7, and Fate. She was indeed a Brazilian cop assigned to The Rock's team as a translator, but was swayed to join the Family by Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto, bonding over their similar losses. She and Dom have a child who, of course, is named Brian. Such uncultured swine here in this thread, no appreciation for the classics.

Once Michelle Rodriguez came back, she was gently put aside with a bullet in the head (for now at least... death is, uh, malleable in this franchise).

Anyone seen Umbrella Academy season 3? I did not like what they did with Allison.

I didn't make it this far in the comic, but the shift in her tone/character was way over done. Sure there's some justifications, but not for everything she does.

The fact that I have a new puppy in my life is a big factor in how my mental state improved to be able to handle a dark show like this again. But also the fact that I have a new puppy is a big factor in why I didn't have time to watch any episodes of it this weekend even though I really want to finish the show to find out what happens.

I've had The Umbrella Academy on my List since S1 debuted. I gave about 3 episodes a spin on Saturday. Hm... is this a typical slow series start? Should I give it another episode or two to get better?

Absolutely. It's the typical "we need to introduce all the characters" slow start of the show. It gets wild. Loving S3 so far and I thought it was really cool for them to address Elliot Page's transition and build it into the storyline.

Keep going. I may be biased because this is one of my favorite shows currently on Netflix.

Agreed, it's also one of my favorites. That said, I'd put S3 as the weakest of the three seasons so far, but only just barely.

I'm watching RRR with my brother this week.
this feels like a movie you need to watch at the theaters and cheer along with everyone in the theater.

short of that, I'll just laugh out loud at pretty much every scene.
I first heard of RRR through Patrick H Willem's YT channel

I was on the fence until I decided to look up Natu Natu on YT.

I didn't like it either, but we're not supposed to, as they're not done with her story yet. The showrunner has said he had a 4 season plan for the show from the start, and it seems pretty likely Netflix will pick it up for the final season.

I know I'm late to the party but I finally got around to watching season 3 of Love Death and Robots. Really good, after the underwhelming season 2. Didn't quite match the best of season 1 but was more consistently good. "Beyond the Aquila Rift" and "Sonnie's Edge" remain my top episodes overall, but "Bad Traveling" manages a very close third.

Finished The Umbrella Academy and loved season 3. I thought this was the best season so far. Didn't care for what they did with Allison and would have liked more from the other school. Also that rape scene should have been a much bigger deal.

Completely out of the blue last week, my brother texts "So...RRR?" and asked if it was, as he felt, the best action movie since Fury Road, and the best romance of the century.

Happy for the Umbrella Academy enjoyers, good to hear they're doing right by Elliot Page, I tried it, but for me it's the best example of my issues with Netflix's algorithm-driven, play-catch-up approach that takes two or three of my likely searches and creates something that's sort of like any of them but not as satisfying. But hilariously in this case, and I gather this was an issue with the comic series as well, the pitch was "What if superheroes, but also The Royal Tenenbaums?" which, okay...that's the original X-Men. "Yeah, but, with this quirky, weird 60s vibe?" which, yes, that's the original X-Men. "No, no, like, what if the superhero mentor was a distant, manipulative jerk like Gene Hackman?" which...again...that's the original X-Men, that take on Charles Xavier has a long, rich history. "Ok, ok, but what if the superheroes, say, say they don't get along, but they still love each other, because at the end of the day, they're family and all each other have?" which, yes, that sounds like the archetypal team of X-Men. "Sure, sure, sure, but suppose the superheroes have, like, sexual hangups and angst, and trauma, and deal with, like, issues of identity?" which...that's all the X-Men, literally every single one. "Yeah, but, suppose their powers are weird and kind of suck, so they sort of hate having them?" which...that's 99% of the X-Men. "Okay, okay, what if they're also trying to avert a future apocalypse?" which, dawg, that's most X-Men stories even if we don't count those featuring Apocalypse. It probably goes other places, but it didn't grab me enough to convince me it was worth it to see.

I think that's a problem with UA the comic book then.

Not the first X-Men copycat and won't be the last

It's absolutely a x-men "rip-off" (more of a they were supposed to be a super-hero team like the x-men but failed and fell apart 10 years ago) but the reason I powered through the first few episodes was because I love watching Robert Sheehan.

For me, the appeal of Umbrella Academy is about 75% "it's like x-men but without the baggage of several decades of comics"
