Questions you want answered.

I have paid for Fastmail for years. Great service, more privacy focused, and has a lot of bring-your-own domain options. Here is a referral if you want to try it: https://ref.fm/u11920349

I've had Tutanota for a minute now, and I'm slowwwwwllllyyy migrating stuff over to it, and leaving all my spam in Gmail.

https://tutanota.com/

Usability-wise, a little rougher around the edges than ProtonMail. But it's also only 12 Euros a year.

The email aliases are the biggest drawback/point of confusion. You get five free aliases, but what's confusing is that once you delete them, it doesn't "free up" a slot. You're just stuck with it.

The bizarre workaround is to buy the add-on for extra aliases. Then let it expire. And when it expires you can pick which ones to keep. Super weird.

Other than that, no complaints about the service itself so far.

Thanks everyone for the good recommendations for de-googling!

I'm going to go through and compare features and maybe do some free version test-drives to see which service ticks all the boxes. As well as the services recommended here I'm going to also test out Zoho's personal product, Zillum.

I'm glad there seems to be some good choices out there.

Anybody have recommendations for a PC printer, either jet or laser, color or black and white? Not that I want it answered, I'd like some answers.

Looks like I get to be the first to recommend Brother laser printers. The HL5450DN I've had since 2013 is still the most reliable printer I've ever owned.

I find printers to be a lot like routers. If you go by recommendations, you'll never find one that's universally liked. That being said, I've been using an HP P1102w for the past eleven years, and while it's not perfect, it does the job.

I used a HP OfficeJet 4650 for the last few years.

I have not had issues with brother printers. My general plan is just to go to the store and buy one of the brother printers.

Yes, Brother printers. Any Brother printer. I'm not one for "brand loyalty", generally speaking, but I can't see myself ever switching to a different manufacturer. (We have a [now discontinued] MFC-J995DW, and it's superb, and - crucially - the ink lasts foreeeeeeeeeever.)

If you want a workhorse that just works for years, get a Brother laser printer.

If you want to print occasional color, I recommend one of the HP Instant Inks, or the Epson equivalent.

The Brother inkjet I've had for years loses connectivity about 20 minutes after being switched on, we gave up on using the wireless connectivity years ago because that just plain didn't work, and you often need to send things to print multiple times before one will print.

It is also the least sh*tty printer I've ever owned.

Printers are awful.

Yet another for Brother printers. The old Brother laser printer I have has the old "out of toner" sensor that you can fool with a piece of electrical tape. It's the best. Unfortunately they have since switched to a different system. I think I've replaced the toner once in my printer, whereas my dad's newer one, they have a garbage bag full of toner cartridges. Mind you, my parents are old, and still print everything so ymmv.

I’ve had the same Brother laser printer (HL-2040) since 2006. I’m more worried about it not working with more recent operating systems than I am about it breaking down.

If your printing needs are on more of an on-demand basis (like, a couple of things printed per year), consider ditching a home printer altogether and utilizing the services of your local library, or Staples/Kinkos/etc. Most places charge only a few pennies per page of B&W, and not needing to deal with draconian ink or toner policies may be well worth it.

Otherwise, yeah, +1 for a Brother laser printer.

I've had an Epson Ecotank for about 5 years. In that time, it's used one full refill of all the inks. Imagine trying to get four or five years out of the chipped ink tanks other companies use. You just take the ink and squirt it into the tank. Quite fast to join the wifi too, when it's turned on.

Had my Canon MF212 b&w laser multifunction for years and it just keeps on keeping on.
I never print in color so b&w was the way to go, the toner carts last forever and 3rd party toner is cheap and works fine.

Yeah I haven't had a printer in 7 years. Library has been my go-to. You get 10 free pages per month or something here. Still don't think I've used 10 pages total.

We have a Samsung C430W laser. No complaints so far.

What's a good site nowadays to buy and sell computer hardware besides eBay? I'm looking to sell an old MacBook and maybe buy a used Mac Mini.

Swappa still works. You need to be really clear about the condition of what you're selling, and put up with people trying to haggle. I bought my Mac Mini off of there.

Another vote in favor of Brother laser printers. We have the HL-L2350DW and the only issue we had was it failing to wake from sleep when we tried to print via WiFi and that was a pretty simple fix (just wasn't a super easy to find or obvious setting).

We've had an Epson XP-7100 inkjet for a couple of years (4 or 5) and it works well. Low amounts of paper that can be kept in at once though.

Oh sh*t..

Our Samsung we've had for 10 years and a second hand one at that. It's finally had it.

What's the Burger King version of McCafé called? They've had a Jack's Café in a city Hungry Jacks here for ages and they're finally rolling it out everywhere.

(Also they now have self service kiosks and they ask you to input your name, gross)

err... Throne Water?

Anybody know farley3k IRL? He's usually pretty prolific in the Post a Picture thread, but he hasn't posted anything since the 15th. I'm... mildly concerned, but who knows. Maybe he just needed a break.

Noticed the same. Last played game on Steam June 17. Try a PM?

Hopefully just summer vacation and taking 2 weeks with family.

I noticed he hasn't posted in a bit also. For some dumb reason I decided to check on everybody I haven't seen or heard from in a long time in real life or virtual life. So far I was just to dumb to figure out they had posted but not in the places I was use to seeing them post in. I didn't know you could check their posting history in some cases. Anyway hadn't gotten to farley. Hope he is okay.

It is vacation time...

Or he could be pulling a RatBoy move. Disappear for 2 years make us all think you're dead, then come back one day and post all day long every day like nothing happened.
