iOS Games Thread Catch All

After clearing away dozens of apps on the iPhone XR to make room for this beast (Immortal), sad to discover it runs rather poorly even with everything turned to its lowest. Great to do that house cleaning tho!

It runs quite well on my 11. Seems fun enough but I’m sure the micro transactions will bite more and more. The main problem right now is the UI. It’s quite cramped and I have trouble keeping the different elements under control. There seems to be a bug where if I pop the chat box up (by mistake) then it refuses to go back down. I basically have to leave and reenter the game.

I have an iphone 8 plus and it works well enough for me. I did download all the additional stuff though. I wonder if it could be a performance hit from maybe downloading the extra stuff in the background if you didn't pre download it all?

I had to do the 12 gig download twice! I downloaded from the AU AppStore (my main Apple ID) then got the message, sorry you’re Battle.net ID is a different region (Japan). So, used my throwaway Japan Apple ID to redownload from scratch. Would have been pissed if it wasn’t FTP but I guess I might have had the option to get a refund.

Just hit lv30 necro.

Yeah I think you're right there. Played the other night when all the on-demand resources have been downloaded and the frame stuttering I had been suffering was pretty much gone. The game is such a beast though. Can only have Immortal and one other heavy game installed on the phone!

I have a level 48 wizard - shavi - on Hadriel if anyone wants to group up.

Been playing on an iPad with all the extras downloaded. Runs well and doesn’t feel too uncomfortable holding it for upwards of an hour and half or so.

Haven’t spent any money and still feel I'm advancing in level and power. Might buy the season pass at some point but I really need to look into the benefits first.

I'm now approaching 500 Combat Rating in Immortal and still cannot find a group to do the Lassal raid.

I've been playing the sh*t out of this. Necro Lv60(24) and Wizard Lv55 so far. Pretty much loving it. It could be that I don't play so many F2P games but I'm having trouble understanding the amount of criticism this game has been getting. Yes, spend $100k on maxing out everything but this is Diablo, that would literally leave you with nothing to do in the game. May as well delete it! Anyway, after playing 20+ hours I was left with the mindset of, I want to spend some money on this game, not on anything in particular, just because I was enjoying it. Which is really the best place you want to be with a F2P game. Nothing in particular jumped out to me as necessary so, after checking online, I ended up buying the enhanced battlepass, which is meant to be the best value purchase. I may buy it again next month. Or I may not. The particularly good thing about the battlepass is that the benefits apply to all characters on your account while many other purchases, say buying a bag of gems, will just give you that purchase for that one character you buy it for.

In comparison, the most heinous F2P game I can think of was Sword and Poker. Loved the first 2 games, then, oddly, Konami released a F2P version. So, I gave it a shot, wasn't bad if seeming to lack some of the magic of the originals. But it had an energy meter, you could play about 3 games then had to wait for it to recharge. Wait, there's a $5 one-time payment to turn off the energy meter! Great! That's pretty much the same as what I paid for the original games. So, I pay the $5, keep playing, yay! Then about half an hour later, I run into a door blocking me from progressing to the next level. Use 3 diamonds to unlock! Either earn diamonds by harassing people on social media or buy them in-game with real money! Now that was deceitful. If I'd kept buying diamonds, I wonder what pay wall I would have hit next? Game deleted.

That’s almost every mobile game released in the last ten years, which is why I’ve played almost no mobile games other than ports of PC games because I prefer the touch interface, or digital board games.

Recently I've played Post Knight (1&2) and now Diablo and I'd argue that they have nothing as heinous as that. The transaction was literally sold as removing the barrier to playing the game but instead only revealed another barrier with a different currency.

I recently went back to Plants vs Zombies HD and Plants vs Zombies 2. I dont remember what PvZ2 used to be like but I doubt it was this uber-F2P-monetize everything... thing which it is now.

The original PvZ had its alternate game modes like I, Zombie locked away behind ridiculous coin purchases, you can grind the coins or.... well the store to buy more coins is down, so that's half the game locked away more-or-less permanently.

That said the core gameplay of PvZ1 is still solid.

I remember PvZ2 always being like that from launch. I went back to it about a year ago. I found that it was nice to buy some plant slots but I could progress fairly smoothly through the game until the beach themed levels. Those just killed me.

Dicey Dungeons is out now on mobile.

Slay the Spire is probably still my favourite in that kind of genre of thing, but DD is good for a change of pace.

I’ve been playing Angrymals which is like worms meets angry birds.

The free Triennale Game Collection Volume 2 is out (the first one is also available & free)
They predictably tend to be on the artsy side of things.

Dicey Dungeons is terrified. Accessible yet deep. I’ve bought it on three different systems.

It really feels like the excitement has worn off. What was the last really big mobile/iOS game? Remember Flappy Birds, Angry Birds, Pokemon Go?

This year is seems like there hasn't been a must play game.

Just this week all I’ve heard about how good Marvel Snap is. I don’t enjoy card games so it got a hard pass from me.

Is it anything like Pokemon Snap?

I've been plinking away at Breach Wanderers. It's early access, but a very competent roguelite deckbuilder. Can recommend if that's a taste you enjoy.

That is because most of it is copycat FTP garbage.

They need to bring Vampire Survivors to iOS, that would be great.

I still play Pokémon Go daily as well as a bunch of otome games, but I didn think there would be an audience here for those. ^^

Diablo Immortal...

The one iOS game I still play nearly every day is Hearthstone. Yes, it isn't an iOS native game, but the implementation is terrific on a phone. The game itself is still good and they seem to be making it easier for people to jump in with little or no past experience. Even when the standard meta feels stale, there are other fun modes (e.g. Battlegrounds and Duels) and some that aren't my cup of tea (e.g. Mercenaries).

But other than that, I've definitely felt that the iOS gaming scene feels pretty uninteresting. I would give my left arm for Vampire Survivors.

Shucks. I'm left handed too. I should've thought that through....

You haven't specified when you would donate your left arm though.
