This is why we need federal voting regulation. Ensure proper paper ballots, counting, and chain of custody at every level. f*ck these fascists.

Border Patrol investigating coin memorializing treatment of Haitian migrants in Del Rio

Miami Herald wrote:

A controversial moment captured last fall on the U.S. southern border of an officer on horseback chasing Haitian migrants with his reins raised like a lash in Del Rio, Texas, has been memorialized on “a challenge coin” that has led to an investigation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Images of the incident led to a public outcry and national scandal, with President Joe Biden demanding accountability for the officers and the Department of Homeland Security launching an independent investigation into the treatment of migrants there. Nearly a year later, the results of the investigation still have not been made public.

The unofficial coin, a token of memorabilia, embraces some of the most controversial elements of the scandal, where video footage appeared to show white border agents using their reins as whips against Black migrants.

For some, the images invoked grim reminders of slave patrols, and for others, the historical mistreatment of Haitian refugees in the United States.

“Reining it in since May 28, 1924,” the coin reads on one side. “Yesterday’s border is not today’s border.”

Images obtained by McClatchy and the Miami Herald also show a warning on the rim of the coin: “You will be returned.”

Forty-one of the coins were recently sold on eBay for $15.19 apiece. Advocates have also come across images of yellow and black coasters showing a man on horseback with his reins in the air, chasing a family of three.

It was not immediately clear how many of the coins were made or distributed.

Sounds like at least 41 U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents need to be fired, though what really needs to happen is a purge of the entire agency.

The Log Cabin Republicans of Texas were shocked that the leadership of the Texas Republican Party denied their permit to have a booth at the Texas Republican Party Convention, which is currently going on in Houston.

In absolutely unrelated news from the convention, attendees voted for this language to be added to the state party's plank:

IMAGE(https://i.imgur.com/77XHmf0.jpg)

The attendees also voted to have the plank include language deeming gender identity disorder as "a genuine and extremely rare mental health condition," requiring all official state documents to adhere to "biological gender," and allowing civil penalties and monetary compensation to to “de-transitioners” who have received gender-affirming surgery, which the platform calls a form of medical malpractice.

The plank also requires Texas students “to learn about the humanity of the preborn child,” including teaching that life begins at fertilization, and requiring students to listen to live ultrasounds of gestating fetuses.

And in general batsh*t conservative craziness the plank officially says that Biden "was not legitimately elected," and rebuked Sen. Cornyn for the high crime of taking part in bipartisan gun talks.

I guess I really don't understand Log Cabin Republicans, especially when I haven't seen this much legitimately threatening anti-LGBTQ language and actions coming from conservatives in decades.

Also from those same proceedings, Dan Crenshaw Confronted by Angry Republicans Calling Him 'Globalist RINO'. And they also referred to him by an ableist insult first perpetuated by, wait for it, Tucker Carlson.

The "angry Republicans" were rocking Proud Boy gear.

I guess Crenshaw and Enrique Tarrio had a falling out. That or far right is just eating itself now.

Crenshaw dared to give a hair's width of ground on gun regulation and them chickens are coming home to roost...

As bad as the anti-Trans stuff is, let us not undersell how big this is. Because this is the party, every meaningful part of it is embracing anti-Democratic lies. Top to bottom.

There are pretty much zero good roads from here.

So after texts from Sen. Ron Johnson's chief of staff were revealed at yesterday's J6 hearing saying that Johnson had a package containing an alternative slate of electors for Wisconsin and Michigan that needed to be delivered to Pence Johnson is now trying to claim that he didn't know anything about anything, that the package -which he didn't know what was in it--was delivered to his office by an unknown House intern who just said it had to be delivered to the VP and the entire thing is just a big non-story.

That’s nuts…his chief of staff literally texts what’s in the package…so that guy is getting thrown under the bus big time..sucks to be without receipts when the music stops. Who would ever work with this guy again?

The State of Maine v. Parole

Maine was the first state to eliminate the possibility of parole. Now, a hard-nosed state legislator and a once-incarcerated PhD student are making the case that parole deserves a second chance. Can they sway a political establishment wary of looking soft on crime?

No one should be surprised that Ron Johnson is an insurrectionist and traitor, even with the ample evidence that he tried to help overturn a legitimate election.

Ugh. I guess it's just as expected, though.
How's your sense of self-defense feeling now?

So does SCOTUS drop the abortion ruling tomorrow afternoon in order to avoid additional news cycles or do they hold until the very last day so they can flee the area?

I believe they flee the area and then release the ruling after giving themselves a 6-week head start.

528: How serious is the SCOTUS concealed gun ruling?

At this point, I'd be happy to have Biden, et.al. follow Elie Mystal's suggested changes to the SCOTUS membership.

Holy sh*tsnacks, that intro is amazing!

Fun to read, even though it (as you know) is discussing our really messed up situation in this country. It reads just like he speaks, if you've ever had the chance.

The audiobook version is read by him, and is amazing

And there goes abortion access to roughly half the country. Don’t think for a second the filibuster is safe to allow a national abortion ban the second republicans are in charge again.

How can a country be so cruel?

And Thomas just put crosshairs on access to contraception, gay sex, and same sex marriage.

It's not the country. It's the f*cking Christian Nationalists.

...but says nothing about Loving, for some reason...

Canada has indicated that we don't really care what the US states say. If you want to come up for an abortion, our borders are open.

And of course, like predicted earlier in the thread, they did it on Friday...

I'm half tempted to say we should bring a suit to make interracial marriage illegal first.
Let Thomas chew on that before they sweep away, contraception and gay marriage with a snap.

Ugh. I am so sorry.

Has there been any talk about creating funds for supporting women who needed to journey to Canada, as well as US states still allowing basic human rights, for abortion?
There was some talk about that here when Poland restricted abortion rights. Not sure how it ended, but it seemed like a good idea at least.

In regard to states allowing for abortion, does any of this reduce their right or ability to continue allowing it? I heard a journalist earlier in this whole process talk about how abolishing Rode vs. Wade might result in a nation-wide ban on abortion. But that shouldnt be the case?
Would a senate majority be able to abolishing abortion?

The fact that we've allowed Thomas to rule on anything when his wife played a major role in trying to overthrow our entire government just amazes me.

Again, republicans will drop the filibuster the second they have a majority in both houses and the presidency for a national acorn ban. Then all the other crazy social sh*t they want will come through too, and this court will back them up.

There are some grass-roots campaigns offering inter-state and international camping trips, but nothing official. There are also some companies that are offering financial support, as well as the opportunity to move to states that do not restrict abortion.

Some states, like Taxes, plan on prosecuting people who travel elsewhere to get abortions. They also plan on financially rewarding snitches.

Any of you out there that use (or who have kids that use) period-tracking apps? Ditch that sh*t right now. 100% guarantee that info will be sold to people who will use it to tack your period, and to track when you are no longer having a period, and thus might be pregnant.
