Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

Though I have two of them and find teenagers unbearable, I thought Ms Marvel Episode 1 was really good. I like how they're really emphasizing her race and culture rather than trying to downplay it, and the cast is great.

Yup. So far, the interaction between Kamala and her brother seem 100% accurate for sibling behaviour.

Is the cultural setting accurate? I would love to see a breakdown of the cultural influences we are seeing.

Like why beta? What does that mean?

Edit to add

Spoiler:

As a dad of two teenage girls, the interaction between Kamala and her father at around the 22 minute mark is so accurate it hurts.

Also, MID CREDIT SCENE!!

Is it the first TV show to have one?

Happy with the episode. Didn’t blow me away but it had a very strong character and flavor which I appreciate.

Wanda Vision had one.

Guy is in Spider Man No Way Home. Department of Damage Control. Right at the beginning.

My wife and I after watching Ms Marvel started watching No Way Home. Otherwise I personally wouldn't have recognized him.

A friend of mine and I spoke about it this morning. He is muslim and said that the muslim family dynamic was very authentic.

Also, regarding beta: beta is Urdu for son but grown ups use this term affectionately for males and females significantly younger than them.

Thanks!

Ms Marvel so far is exactly what I was hoping for regarding translating the feel of the comic into a show. I'm still not sold on having her powers come from an outside source like the bracelet, but I get them not wanting to bring Inhumans & Terrigen Mist into it. The comic had accepting yourself for who you are as one of its big themes, and that's a bit harder to do when she can just take a bracelet off and go back to having no powers.

Thor Imax tickets acquired. Excited.

If you haven’t seen the documentary that goes along with Ms. Marvel, it’s pretty cool. Iman Villani is….well, even in a world where Patrick Stewart —> Professor X, and Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, and Samuel L Jackson —> Fury…Iman Villani might be the best casting choice in Marvel’s history.

It's already out? Don't they usually wait until the show is over before releasing those?

It’s different from the other documentaries - it’s A Fan Guide to Ms Marvel (it auto played for me after I watched the first episode) and whew - Villani kind of is Kamala Khan. A real life Avengers superfan who gets to be a superhero. It’s nice to see some truly earnest storylines being told.

Heck between this first episode and how much I liked Moon Knight, I may go back and give Hawkeye a chance despite my thick distaste for Renner.

I also don't really don't like Jeremy Renner.

Hawkeye is 100% worth it. It's fun. Renner does a solid job actually, and I haven't said that for... a while. But even if he hadn't, it'd be worth it for kinda everything else. It's just a good time.

Also +1 to everything said about Iman Villani. Perfect casting for the character so far.

Thoroughly enjoyed the second episode of Ms Marvel, and mildly surprised it went to some of the places it did considering Disney's general aversion to upsetting anyone at all.

For context Mrs Sorb's best Friend is Muslim and she's astonished just how well the family dynamic is played - she says it pretty much matches up her friends experiences growing up here in the UK, which Mrs Sorb had plenty of exposure to as well.

Much like Hawkeye it feels like its got the balance of 'fun' and comic down really well, it takes itself just seriously enough.

I loved the discussion in the bathroom with her friend. But not nearly as much as her friend's discussion with KK's father.

That and "It's not Snap, it's Insta!!"

This, all of this. Her friend is amaaaaaaazing.

Nakia is great! Angry lady LEO is an obnoxious trope, but otherwise loving the show.

If the hijab-wearing Stan girl doesn't have a name, I suggest Stamala, Staman, or Stakia.

I just hope the Vulture is a part of this team and that he isn't forever lost to SPUMC...

Watched Doctor Strange multiverse and was put off a bit by American Chavez. In the comic she dark skinned Afro Latina. Hollywood has a thing of using light skinned women anytime they cast dark skinned woman in a big role. Strom is a dark skinned in the comics but light skin Halle Barry played her and then another light skin girl played the younger version of her. Ms. Marvel same thing but I do love the actress they used. It would be nice if a main female character can be dark skinned especially if it is one where I own the comics have a dark skinned doll of her.

That is what I think of when thinking of Chavez. And while I'm at it they took the green color out of the witch also. Every lady has to be lite skin. Colorism is a thing. Despite that I did like the movie.

Baron was talking about a specific character and even posted images to illustrate, which you might’ve noticed if you actually read his post instead of minimizing it with your passive aggressive image.

Plus the actress that portrays Shuri is hardly a good example of someone others should look up to.

I don't know if I would count black panther actors. Are the ladies main characters even Shuri? Even if they are could they have used non dark skinned actors without making the movie look kind of silly given the history and location of Wakanda? And if you still want to count it well that is one you got 50 more? How about 10? 5? One movie doesn't really satisfy me.

White people are nervous around anyone darker than Bryant Gumble.

Wait, if Phasmophobia has taught me anything, then the best way to deal with Jinn is to shut off the circuit breaker to cut them off from their special abilities.

And one blue arm ties the origin of Kamala's powers back into the Kree (at least a little bit). I continue to be extremely pleased with how they've brought the feel comic into the show.

Watched Dr Strange 2 since it finally hit D+. I really enjoyed it, but can absolutely see how some people would dislike it. It was a lot of horror movie stuff to handle if you went in expecting to see a wizard battle movie. Some of the more "Sam Raimi" bits (like the spirits of the dead sequence) were still a bit jarring/unexpected to see in an MCU feature film. Not that they don't belong in a Dr Strange story, I just didn't expect them to so readily get into some of the weirder aspects of Dr Strange's stories in one of their blockbuster movies. They definitely fit though, particularly with the Dr Strange run from Marvel's All New All Different period that started in 2015.

Spoiler:

I would have liked to see Strange freak out a bit more about 838's Strange figuring out a way to defeat Thanos without requiring the Blip, at least until he found out what that way actually cost (an entire other universe destroyed and Strange's corruption), and it requiring much more advanced warning about Thanos's invasion and a whole other roster of heroes to work with (plus Star Lord not being there to screw up the plan of removing the gauntlet).

The biggest negative I seen on Strange was that for a movie called multiverse of madness they didn't hit on the multiverse very hard. I can see their point but didn't mind that nor would have thought about it if someone else didn't bring it up. I thought have different Stranges and different versions of characters was enough.

If anyone wants to see a true multiverse of madness movie watch Everything Everywhere all at Once which I think might be my best movie of the year so far. The hit on a bunch of different universes, have different versions of people, and stuff that it is bat S insane that makes a weird sense. Also Short Round is in it and does a very good job. To bad he wasn't given a chance to do more acting.

I agree with all of this - especially that more people should see Everything Everywhere All at Once. Hands down my favorite movie of the year. Also, what a great Love Letter to Michelle Yeoh and that she should do WAY MORE movies.

But back to Strange 2. I also think Chavez is too young. So I wonder if they're aging her down so they can have her feel more normal with the Young Avengers (assuming they do a movie or D+ series), and then have it led by Kate Bishop. Obviously, that's a lot of speculation, but I don't recall Chavez feeling this young in the comics.
