Star Wars Misc. Catch-All

Whoa.

Interesting Kenobi episode. Had a force unleashed moment that looked bad but was still cool. Didn't expect either of those fights. Liked both for different reasons. Droids, one was used good and the other was kind of silly. Just thought of something.

Spoiler:

Are they using a droid/human love scene for a star trek type situation to say something about LGBTQ relationships but using a droid instead of a alien. Maybe I'm reading to much into it.

Anyway this was my favorite episode so far. People go up and down ranks fast in the Empire.

Star Wars has a long history of droids and their companions having a deep connection.

The Third Sister vs. Vader fight definitely shot up to number 2 in my ranking of lightsaber battles behind Rey and Kylo Ren vs. Snoke's red guard.

So you never saw the finale of Clone Wars?

Or Rebels Obi Wan duel.

Yeah, it was another example of droids being more "human" than they're typically given credit for. It's been a kind of an unspoken theme in Star Wars from the start, but only Solo has really touched on it. In the Star Wars universe, Droids weren't viewed as sentient by most people and they had no rights. The Republic & the Empire both considered them nothing more than property and regular memory wipes were recommended to keep them from developing independent thoughts. Most of the droid characters we've seen though have had owners who deliberately didn't wipe their memories, which led to them developing personalities far beyond their programming. It's an interesting ethical issue: droids don't start out as a true artificial intelligence, they start with a personality matrix that would probably be best described as a kind of Chinese room. However, all but the most simplistic of droids possess the capability to develop into one if left alone long enough. This is widely known, but disregarded or dismissed as quirks rather than viewed as what it actually is. And in order to keep from having to start treating their robot slaves as people, most of the galaxy just wipes their memories at the first sign of it happening.

Did anybody think Darth Vader was going to "Dooku" Third Sister/Reva when he approached her with the two light sabers?

Yes.

On another note, Stormtroopers are really bad at shooting.

No, they are great at shooting, they are bad at aiming.

I found this amusing.

I still remember playing the original Dark Forces game demo. First time I killed a storm trooper and picked up his gun my immediate reaction was "oh, that explains a LOT."

Blasters are projectiles, not light like lasers. So they can have some kick and inaccuracies in them.

Why did I have to learn through Michael Stackpole's Twitter that there's a character in Obi-Wan named this?

Oh damn.

My favorite standalone Legacy book is "I, Jedi"

I wonder if this is a tease for Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron film. Stackpole also said she contacted him after the movie was announced.

He was introduced in the Xwing series which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I know, that's why I specified standalone.

Thrawn Trilogy, X-Wing Series, Thrawn Duology, there's a lot of great old books that sort of don't count anymore.

I think I read the X-Wing Series of novels more than my college textbooks freshman year.

I knew you knew

They count if you want them too. IMO, all the Disney stuff is the legends. Expanded Universe is still the Expanded Universe.

Well I appreciate Dave Filoni getting Thrawn in with Rebels. Seems like he'll keep working good stuff in as he can.

I actually find post-Episode III/pre-Episode IV Vader to be an interesting character and am looking forward to seeing Obi-Wan explore more of him. I haven't read the comics, but apparently they have really explored that time period.

... say what now?

I'm struggling to detect an 'intermediate' Vader in this series. By the time Obi-Wan starts, he's been Vader for around 8 years (based on my guess at Leia's age). I've little to convince me that he isn't already the Vader that we will see in 10 or so year's time in 'A New Hope'.

More problematic for me is the inconsistency in Vader's 'force-sniffing' powers.

Spoiler:

He can sense Obi-Wan's presence (both in this series and in Episode IV). He can detect Reva's attempted deception. But he can't 'smell' his own daughter?

I'm not convinced.

I recognise the challenge for Disney here. They're effectively having to fill in some narrative gaps and provide more colour to the story told in the Original Trilogy and the Prequels. But they are horribly constrained by a need to colour 'within the lines' of those existing stories.

Are they? Why is this what they "have" to do? Why does every 5-minute span in the lives of the same six characters need to be exhaustively explored?

The sequel movies sucked, but they paid for Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. They don't "have" to do anything.

Spoiler:

He doesn't know his daughter even exists so how would he recognize her "scent" as being that of his daughter? She might not have a detectable scent at all as she has never even accessed the force so far as we know.

Just another stupid thing the prequels gave us that George Lucas didn't think through that makes everyone in the stories look like morons.

Anakin Skywalker can't find Luke Skywalker, hiding in plain sight with his only living relatives? At least Leia having a different last name makes her hiding somewhat believable.

Being able to sense other specific force users in ones immediate area is from A New Hope.
