Humble Monthly Gamble Discussion Thread

Oh great now more people can be disappointed by Squadrons, but at a discount.

Can you maybe not with your Space Sim Hot Takes here? I don't see how this is productive comment.

Hey I feel I'm doing a public service by lowering people's expectations for Squadrons so maybe, just maybe, they'll be low enough that someone might actually enjoy it.

Gamedec is on my wishlist, but I dont think I can justify the month just for that.

I submitted a ticket to Humble Bundle support, but are the Steam keys from the June bundle giving anyone else trouble?

Every single one came up as invalid, for me.

Hah, I own it but didn't play too much of it. It just didn't draw me in but a lot of time has passed since I played TIE Fighter so I couldn't really pin down what wasn't doing it for me. I might just be getting jaded.

I guess this is a skipper month for me. Last one was too but I think I missed the email then forgot.

I'm kind of with Veloxi on this one. It's an amazingly beautiful game that not many people really wanted. X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, the Rogue Squadron games, and even Starfighter all did reasonably well to very well. All of these games show there is a healthy market for single player Star Wars flight games.

I just mentioned in another thread a few days ago that I'd love to see Squadrons remade as either a more robust flight sim (similar to Freespace2) or even something arcade-y like Freelancer, because those fall much more in line with games that have done well in the past, but there's too little demand for a competitive space shooter.

That being said, they released it for free on Prime Gaming in October and that didn't even improve the number of active players much. I played it a little but while I tend to love Star Wars games in general, and loved the look of it, it had nothing to really keep me interested in it. This feels like a last ditch effort to inject new players into a game that's already on life support.

Edit: I got to thinking about it, and a very similar game would be the Close Quarters Combat (CQC) mode within Elite: Dangerous. There are die-hard E:D fans out there that have been playing since beta, and even at the height of concurrent players playing the main game, they were never able to sustain enough people to have even reasonable queues in CQC. Because there is healthy player interest in pretty much anything you can do in E:D... except joining the competitive team-based space shooter mode.

Squadrons was fun in VR for a few hours. Unless Humble gives me the $8 deal, I'll be skipping this month.

How's Phoenix Point? I'm always up for more turn-based XCOM-ish goodness, if this scratches the itch.

It's..... Okay...

I believe it is still a part of Gamepass which is where I tried it.

That's about all I have to say about it, which doesn't help, but YMMV.

I bounced off of Phoenix Point over a year ago on Gamepass. It was like Xcom in many ways but very obtuse and not all that fun. I think it has changed a lot since then though and I probably should try it again.

"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"

They're running a deal with Humble Choice for $6 a month for the next 3 months of Choice.

I figured what the hell, as I was interested in two of the games this month. But I know I'm probably wasting money as I only play about 25% of the games I get from there for any serious length of time. The rest I'll either play for an hour or less and uninstall or just not ever get to.

Same…same.

Eh, I guess I will pay that for Gamedec.
How does it work, you just resume, or do you have to register something for the deal to take effect?

This month looks pretty good. Headliner is Deep Rock Galactic, which the conference call has heaped glowing praise upon.

Also has:

Necromunda: Hired Gun, Legion TD 2, Legend of Keepers, Lawn Mowing Simulator, Banners of Ruin, Yes Your Grace, and Atom RPG: Trudograd

That knocks a couple things off my wishlist. Seems like a nice line-up this time out.

Not really intereted in any of these games. Maybe Atom RPG: Trudograd, but the text makes it sound like you really should play Atom RPG first, making the sequel a weird game to get

Still not sure how you get the 3 months for $6 per month though. Just sign up for 3 months and hope you actually get the price cut afterward?

I got offered the 3/$6 plan once while jumping through the hoops to pause a month and twice just out of the blue in email. I thought it was once, but a gmail search happened to find the second offer in my 'promotions' tab from mid-June. It expired at 9:59 PT today.

Yeah, got offered it last month, and re-subbed last month. Oh well, tried to throw them a support ticket now.

I got the offer email but when I try to use it it says I'm not eligible...

If you are a perpetual pauser, then you can't use it once the new month's games are announced. If you pause again, they may give you the same offer just before next month's games are announced. The offer basically expires the day before the following months games are announced.

It looks like they sent me the email on the 4th and I tried to use it same day. It would actually go up to the point where It would allow me to pick payment but would cancel out when processing.

Not a big deal, they just won't be getting money from me unless something really nice pops up. Already have Deep Rock Galactic on Gamepass anyways.

This was a total slam dunk for me, surprisingly. It's been a while since I've been excited.

Deep Rock Galactic is on Gamepass, but IIRC it lacks crossplay so having it on Steam is nice.

Big 40k guy so Hired Gun is exciting!

Love me some Tower Defense, but Legion TD was always a little too pricey for me to gamble on it (not sure about the online stuff)

Banners of Ruin, more deckbuilding goodness!

August 2022 games:

The Ascent
HOT WHEELS UNLEASHED ™
A Plague Tale: Innocence
Gas Station Simulator
In Sound Mind
Mind Scanners
Emily is Away <3
Omno

The Ascent is totally worth it at that price, jumping in for the rest as I own none of them.

It's a pause for me this month as I've played The Ascent on Game Pass (great fun especially in co-op) and I'm currently playing A Plague Tale: Innocence, which I got free from Epic. Mind Scanners is also on my GP list to try out.

Of the others; Hot Wheels Unleashed looks fun, but this month I think I'll just get Inscryption which is in the sale and I'm eager to play.

Not a bad month. Wanted Hot Wheels Unleashed for a bit. The Ascent looks good. Was always curious about Emily is Away. If I already didn't have A Plague Tale on Epic this would be almost a perfect month of selections.

September 2022:

Crusader Kings III
Just Cause 4: Complete Edition
The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos
Forgive Me Father
Crown Trick
Descenders
INDUSTRIA
shapez
shapez - Puzzle DLC

Good mix. Descenders is especially great.

That seems like a nice bundle, definitely getting this month.

The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos

I absolutely loved this game. Had I not bought it quite a while back and played through it, that might have been enough to tempt me this month. If you like turn-based tactical games like XCOM2, it's definitely worth getting into.

Ripper of a bundle, I'm very impressed.

Crown Trick, Forgive Me Father, Shapez and INDUSTRIA were all on my wishlist. I've heard great things about Descenders, too.

I have no idea if I'll enjoy Crusader Kings. I tried pretty hard to get into Stellaris, but always felt like I was missing crucial understandings of the game. The cool theme kept me playing. I have very little interest in Medieval politics, but have always heard how good this game is so I'm thinking I'll at least give it a shot when I have a lot of spare time (lol, when?)
