Google Android catch-all

So friends I'm running into the oddest thing, and I thought getting a new phone might fix it but no dice.

For some reason, every Twitter app I try doesn't sync in the background. None of them. I've tried four so far and even though they have access to data and notifications, they still don't sync in the background at all and I just cannot for the life of me figure out why. This is over WiFi and cellular.

Anyone ever run into anything like this and know how to fix it? Google searches are incredibly unhelpful. Thank you!

Probably the dumbest question you'll get, but besides the permissions for accessing data and notifications, are the apps also set to allow data use in the background?

Yeah that's one of the first things I checked, so confusing:

I'll look into this.

Thanks guys.

K I did add it to "Never Sleeping Apps", is that the same thing?

That might help also but if you go to settings -> apps & notifications -> twitter -> batter you should see battery optimization that you can turn off.

It must be in a different place on this Samsung but I think I have it set properly. Interestingly it's not used any memory in the last three hours even though I've used it myself. Curiouser and curiouser.

I think the only gripe I have with my 6 so far is that it does seem like it takes longer to connect to previous Wifi networks.

Google Fu isn't showing me this as a common/known problem with a work around.

But ya pretty sure when I'm entering somewhere that I've saved the network is waiting for it to flip over.

Does anyone know how to mount a Samba share in Android so that other apps and the default file explorer can access them?

ConnectedNAS no longer works and Google retired their own Samba client for reasons.

Using a file manager like FX Explorer or Solid Explorer works, except you can't use these file explorers from within other apps to open files from the SMB share.

So when I add a web page to the home screen I don't get a refresh button or search bar. How do I fix this? This makes my daily wordle harder than it needs to be because I can't refresh the page easily.

I know I can just bookmark the page but there has to be a way to refresh the page if it is pinned to the desktop.

Have you tried swiping Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Volume up, Volume down?

Apparently you can't when the page you're saving has PWA/"Progressive Web App" functionality.

Regular pages you can still just pull down to refresh like you'd expect. But things like Google Drive becomes "apps" and not webpages once you add to Home.

TIL! Weird.

Edit: For pages you've saved to the Home screen that are now apps, try long pressing them, and then selecting "App info" and "Force Stop". When you open it again it seems to refresh.

Don't click disable though. That removes it from Home and it might clear the data (I'm not sure, but based on how other apps work).

wow wow wow

Youtube Vanced has been taken down. If you already have it the app should continue to work. If you don't have it getting a copy might be tricky but you probably be able to figure something out.

Wonder how long it will continue to work before Google blocks it?

Gosh that app has been amazing. Doing all the things that YouTube app should do like playing in background. I'm sad I only found it a few months ago.

Although that reminds me, I can't get YouTube links to auto open in it. I got them to stop opening in YouTube and just open in a chrome tab. But then I have to open Vanced and play from history. I'm missing a setting somewhere but can't find it

Youtube plays in the background, but you have to pay them money to get that functionality. Which is why they're blocking alteratives.

LG V20 problems.

1. Hit with the LG IMS error that was super annoying. (Reset everything a few times. Lost save game data)
2. Random Unsuccessful files in download folder. (Reset everything with the SD card wipe. Lost more data). I finally figured out Chrome was doing it for some reason. Maybe it was too old. Swap to the Beta Version. Works now.

Android you are brilliant when you work and a PC levels of pain when you don't.

Android is definitely more like PC. I tried going back to iPhone after many years on Android, but only lasted about six months. Android is better if you care at all about customizing things.

Pixel 7 thoughts?

I know the 6a just came out but Fi is offering $100 off either 7 to upgrade.

I skipped the 6s due to the issues.
I'm tempted to jump for it, though likely for the Pro.

They removed the option for Google Assistant to be in Car-Mode.

Well, Google did the same thing with Android Auto.

And I don't really like Waze.

I want a music player, with the ability to get a map if needed. Not the other way around.

Any recommandation ?

Can you clarify what you meant by that? Is this without Android Auto?

It is. My car connect only on bluetooth for music. I then use my cell hand-free. I'm suppose to change car soon, but the new one isn't here now.

There's a surfeit of dashtop screens on AliExpress that'll serve up Android Auto or CarPlay UIs for a phone that's connected to them. My experience with running CarPlay on one is that connecting audio by Bluetooth after the UI launches will reroute sound output as expected (found entirely by accident).

Well, I had that directly on my cellphone.

I had 3 sections :
- a map option
- control for my music player (Spotify and others)
- a button for calls

I'm currently trying Waze, but I don't like it so far. The focus is on the map.

I'm still seeing drive mode on my phone. Not sure what's missing. If I say "Hey google, let's drive", it pulls up the map in drive mode. If I give a direction and start playing an audio app, the audio app properly nests below the map, etc.

That's the way it's been for awhile for me. Unless I'm just late on an update being pushed to me.

Yeah, I think that's Google Maps doing that.

Google assistant was the app I had, now it no longer go in drive mode.

Edit : I tried to use Google Maps as well, but is there like a "roaming mode" without setting a direction ?

I'm really torn about upgrading from my S20+ to maybe a S23 Ultra. My phone's battery is getting weaker but I'm still ticked about the removal of the memory card option, so didn't upgrade last year to wait to see what else comes around. LG's no longer a player, and Google's never going to support expanding storage. Not sure about the Chinese brands.

I'm normally a several month after release adopter, but the pre-order stuff that ends today seems worth it. First, you get a storage upgrade for free, so I'd get 512GB. $100 credit for accessories, which I'd probably spend on Galaxy Bud Pro 2's. And a bunch of free service months for several services, including Youtube, where I'd get about $50 worth of value. Plus, Rakuten has a 15% cash back offer on mobile for Samsung.

I have a large SD card in my phone for pics/vids, podcasts, and audiobooks. I like not having to manage that by just sticking a 1TB card in there.

It's an expensive phone, but that's the norm these days and I'm eventually going to need to upgrade. If we still had easily swappable batteries I'd be good for awhile longer

Wow, still rocking the S20! I hate the removal of the SD card too but I just delete finished books and have been OK so far with the 256. I think the 512 would do you just fine.

I don't know about the S23, but the S22 didn't have that stupid curved screen which allowed me to go back to tempered glass. It makes touch and viewing so much better.

I love my ZFold 4. About the same size as my S22 (maybe a little thicker) but opens up to be the size of my Kindle Oasis. I've stopped using my Kindle because of it.

So I broke and ordered it last night after coming home from the movie. Hopefully being a bit bigger than my old phone won't annoy me, but if it does, my wife is a long time Note user that I'm sure would take it. I went green, but it seems that was popular and isn't projected to be here until March 10. Was going to go the Samsung online exclusive gray because it was supposed to ship faster, but it apparently was sold out.

Strangely already got $178 back from Rakuten this morning on the cash back offering. That normally takes a month.

EDIT: And now I see people reporting problems with Android Auto.
