Welcome folks, and happy “163rd anniversary of Big Ben ringing for the first time” week! After the Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire in 1834, the 320-foot-high tower and accompanying bell became the highlight of the planned reconstruction. While “Big Ben” originally referred to just the bell itself, over time it began to include the clock, as well. To help achieve the formidable goal of perfect time-keeping accuracy for such a large clock, Big Ben was checked twice each day against the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Remarkably, it continued to function even when a German Blitz bombing run destroyed the attached House of Commons chamber. You may all celebrate by playing an old game where the sequel holds up better than the original.

It’s a slow week for new releases, but we can’t lay the blame squarely on E3 this year; instead, it’s the shadow of E3, by way of replacement showcases, that looms large over the release schedule. With so many devs and gamers looking to the future, the volume of releases this week feels a little like a hotel’s complimentary breakfast of pre-packaged pastries and tube dispensers of off-brand cereal rather than a full-on buffet.

Wonder Boy Collection packages 4 of the original games together for re-release on Switch and PS4. I never played them back in the day, but I did enjoy my time with the recent Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom that borrowed heavily from the series. I won’t be picking this up, but I’m always glad to see these bits of game preservation, even with a price tag attached.

Gravitar: Recharged is the latest of the Atari Recharged games and offers a fresh look for the original Asteroids-thrust-controls-meets-gravity gameplay. This time, you can even play co-op, which tethers two ships together to require even greater coordination between players.

SILT is an underwater puzzle-adventure game with a striking art style. The shadowy, greyscale palette highlights the exploration of a mysterious world filled with a creepy aesthetic from surrealist artist (and studio art director) Mr Mead. You solve puzzles by possessing the bodies of nearby sea creatures to bite through chains, smash through debris, and so on. Everyone ready for another rousing round of Game vs. Art?

Souldiers is a 16-bit, hack-n-slash platformer with three classic combat classes to choose from: basically, an archer, a mage, and a sword-n-board soldier. RPG-lite upgrade trees accompany each class, though it appears like you’re locked into whichever class you choose at the outset. Screenshots don’t quite do justice to the gorgeous retro-styled animations on display, but you don’t have to hunt for a trailer to check it out since there’s already a demo available on Steam. Now that’s confidence!

SnowRunner may just be the prettiest game this week. It’s been out for two years, but makes the jump to modern consoles with support for 4k resolution at 60fps. That alone may be reason enough for many to double dip, as the graphics of the Spintires franchise has always been top-notch. But I also hear great things about the off-road, heavy-vehicle simulation.

Super Perils of Baking is a great title attached to a so-so looking platformer. Apparently, it’s a remake of the devs’ very first game, originally released all the way back in 2018. I’m not so sure 4 years is long enough to start releasing nostalgia remakes, but the update of the overall game design looks significant based on the preview trailers. And kudos to Lillymo Games for that.

The competition isn’t fierce this week. Originally, I wasn’t even planning to wishlist anything, but after a couple of trailers and only a few minutes with the demo, Souldiers gets my GOTW and very likely an upcoming purchase. Unless it sneaks onto GamePass, I’ll have to favor the Switch release because it just feels like it fits nicely there. Besides, somehow it’s already waiting for me at the top of my eShop wishlist.
