Random thing you loathe right now.

They didn't hit me until my mid-20's. And now in my late '50's, they are starting to back off. Claritin and remember to drink lots of water.

I’ve had the worst sinusitis in years. Never been sick this long in a while too.

Get some steam-distilled water - essential, don't use tap water - and a good nasal flush kit, squeeze bottles are the best. Use one packet of saline to the bottle initially, then go to the recommended amount when you no longer have a flinch reaction to it. Clears those right up and if you get them early, prevents it flipping over into an infection in the first place.

I used to have nearly continuous sinus infections until I found this stuff when a friend had nasal surgery and his doctor recommended it for recovery. Now I go five years or more between them. Can't remember the last one I had...

Or if you're lazy like me, Simply Saline is great.

Just ate a fortune cookie. The fortune, you ask? "If money talks, then Bitcoin sings." Ugh...

I use that too, Chairman, but if you want to get the bacteria hiding out in your sinuses and kill them with salt, a good squeeze-bottle wash is the way to go. After that it's just maintenance and preventing drying out.

My sister was given a package of fortune cookies from a neighbor who’s in real estate. Every fortune seemed primed to convince prospective customers that buying a home was a good idea. Stuff like “In order to enjoy opportunity, you must first say yes” or “The path you’re on is the path that’s meant to be.”

Does there really have to be a high pitched sound coming from the neighbours at 11pm. I can't even imagine what that f*cked up noise is.

Do they have a vuvuzuela or something?

Came back home yesterday after being away for two and a half weeks, and the power has been out for almost three days (and counting). This means:
1. I can't work from home (I'm currently in my brother's apartment while he's away)
2. Everything in my fridge and freezer has gone bad (I guess the fact that I usually don't have a huge stock of anything is a blessing in this case)

I have no doubt that Hydro Ottawa is working around the clock to fix the issues ASAP, but still...

I tried hooking up my modem/router to the battery I can use to jump start my car in winter, but that only gave me wi-fi, no internet.

If you're on a cable provider, the signal is probably down because the power supplies that run the amplifiers on the mains are also out. Part of my job used to be to go toss generators down to get our signal up during power outages, but if the outage is large enough no system is going to have enough generators for everyone.

Good to know!

Everything came back to normal in the middle of the afternoon. I've never been happier to do laundry!

Tipping for coffee and tipping for fast food, specifically sub sandwiches. Went to Scooter's today and got coffee. Normally I make it myself at work but wanted a bit more kick. Kid asked if I wanted to add a gratuity to my order. I said yes even though the answer is unequivocally no. Tipping in general is stupid and tipping for something like coffee just makes me angry, especially when someone has to ask for it.

Because the kid is earning a living wage already? We've set up a system whereby these workers can often make less than minimum wage in salary, when you look at the hours worked versus pay. They *depend* on tips. It's not just "to insure proper service". It's to f*cking help them survive...

And yes, it's at the point where some fast food franchisees are cheaping out on labor costs to the degree that its necessary. If there's a tip jar, or a request, it's not because they are padding their wallets. It's because they are deeply underpaid (and many of these jobs won't pay for after hours work, like cleaning up).

In the US, tipping is survival for many people. Help them out.

I was trying to find an eloquent way to say basically what Robear said way better than I could.

Lots of people need tips to survive. Be angry at the system that's set up to allow that, not the victims of it.

I just hate the catch-22 it creates for consumers. I don't agree with tipping either, but if I boycott doing it I'm hurting someone that doesn't have any input in the system. These companies are using financially vulnerable people as human shields in a hostage situation with our wallets, while they walk away with a secure and comfortable income.

You saw the story on Subway on Last Week Tonight didn't you?
I've never tipped at Subway and haven't eaten there in a long time. The former will change for sure when I get around to doing the latter more.

I tipped. I said I tipped. I waited tables for $2.85 an hour for years. I know how tipping works and why it's important. I don't need to get jumped on because I don't like the system.

Jump Jump
Criss Cross will make ya
Jump Jump
Daddy Mac will make ya

Might as well jump
Jump
Go ahead and jump

Jump around
Jump around
Jump up jump up and get down

Dude... You said your answer would normally be "unequivocably no". From, that I'm supposed to get to "Oh, he's actually okay with tipping"?

Also, very confused by "I'm good with tipping, but not with the tipping system, but I tipped, although normally I would never tip". Sorry, that's how it reads... Your loathe was "I had to tip someone even though I didn't want to."

No. That is not what I said. First, I never said normally. You are putting words in that were not there.
Exactly what I said was:

I said yes even though the answer is unequivocally no.

That doesn't speak whatsoever to whether I tip on a normal basis or not despite your assumption that I don't tip. It says two things.
1. I tipped this time.
2. The answer to if I want to tip is no, I don't want to tip.

Neither of those speak to whether I tip in general or not.

Could I have been more clear? Yes. Could you have asked for clarification before going off and on a condescending lecture and swearing at me about how I'm a terrible person? Also yes.

So I'll be very clear.
1. Tipping sucks. I don't want to tip.
2. I tip regularly and tip well despite 1.
3. Tipping as a regular practice being adopted by more and more businesses it something I loathe.

Clarity is good. Your loathe really, really read like you loathed tipping, for no reason given. And I was not the only one that read it that way. That's where my reaction came from.

Yeah I too read it like you loathe tipping and the people you have to tip.

We all need to give a little grace to one another... Maybe just assume the best from a fellow GWJer who is well established in the community before engaging in a lengthy riposte, and ask for clarity first?

My initial reaction was based on shock.

Dunno what y'all are smoking, but I read Homer's comment in exactly the way I think he intended, which was, "Pay your f*cking workers. They deserve it." Not, "I do not want minimum wage people to get more money."

Yikes.

I 100% agree with this! I was watching this thread devolve into something I would expect to see on reddit (or other parts of the internet), but definitely not here.

I then made sure I was on the same GWJ forum that I have come to love over the past 15 years. I'm just going to pretend everyone is still on covid-edge and this was blown out of proportion for no reason other than that.

Speaking of Covid and things to loathe. I never go anywhere and the one time I go to my 2 year old niece's birthday(or really probably the as station later that night on the way home for the 1.5 hour drive), I got Covid.

Second loathe, my clinic apparently doesn't trust an at home test and want me to come in to test(to expose others?) to potentially prescribed the antiviral.

Our medical system in the US is F***ed.

There's also the fact that the system still creates issues because of where and when tipping is seen as "acceptable". The person working at your local grocery store probably gets the same garbage wages as the person getting your latte, but only one of those people is getting their income supplemented.
