Playstation 5 Catch-All

Although, somewhat annoyingly, I just learned that if you take a screenshot and delete it a minute later because it's served its purpose, the PS app still has it and will continue to have it for two weeks. Right now my PS app Captures are overflowing with The Witness screenshots.

GameStop in person systems Saturday

Has VRR been implemented yet? I got a new TV that supports VRR but it says Off when in game mode. I am a bit confused as it was supposed to be coming to PS5... or are they just super slow to roll it out?

VRR is coming later this year.

Actually, it’s coming this week!

I finally managed to buy a nice big shipping box for my cats, they love it

(There was a cool PS5 in there for me too!)

Tagging myself in the thread because I can finally join the PS5 family! Initial impressions are VERY positive. Astrobot is better than any 3D platformer game in the last 10 years and the controller just brings a whole new element to gaming. Really impressed with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and especially love how different each weapon feels physically with the triggers. Still running a 1080p TV but would likely be playing on performance mode anyway. Smooth 60 with near Pixar-level graphics in real time is just blowing my mind.

Also went ahead and grabbed a cheap copy of Cyberpunk for the free upgrade, and ordered Horizon Forbidden West since it was stupidly pricey in brick n' mortar stores here.

Yay!

Fantastic news. Gratz to you and the cats!

Wow, just tested 40fps fidelity mode on Miles Morales... fantastic, perfect time for me to play it.

VRR seems to work well on my C1.

Is this update only in EU right now or something? I just got a VRR enabled TV last week. Also it appears I asked about it just a few days ago in this very thread, lol.

I don't believe it's out yet, and individual games also have to be patched for it as well.

I have it in Canada.

I am excited to check VRR out on my CX!

Vrr is working great as long as I connect directly through the TV and not through my AVR. Otherwise everything turns pink/orange. Might be a cable issue I suppose. I don't like the Samsung UI but looks like I will need to deal with it.

VRR support appears to have been stealthily added in the last update. If you restart your PS5 it will magically appear in Settings, even without a new update. I learned this from Vincent Teoh's video, and confirmed it on my own PS5.

There's an option to "Turn on VRR in unsupported games". As was true of Boost Mode on the PS4, it may have no effect on those unsupported games, it may work well without issue, or it may cause problems with those games, so you may have to turn it off for particular games.

Quick note that VRR will not work if you’re using your PSVR breakout box.

I was excited to try VRR out then remembered I use it for PSVR about as much as PS5 games, so I’d be unplugging and rearranging cables constantly.

PSVR2 when?

We were grabbing coffee and tea as a moving day (part 2 of ?) morning pick-me-up and saw a long line outside the GameStop that we got ours at last month. Gave them all a cheer as we went by.

Picked up a cheap copy of Cyberpunk and tried the PS5 upgrade. I'm not sure how to feel.

It's fairly pretty, it runs smooth enough. It's mostly a solid 60FPS on performance mode despite a few drops here and there, some weird geometry load in issues but I haven't noticed any actual bugs. Smooth sailing.

But it feels like a game trapped between generations. It's trying to be a sprawling open world, but doesn't present you with, well, that "openness". So far it's been fairly straightforward and feels far more limited than Witcher 3. NPCs just seem weird to me, walking around aimlessly. The city feels so artificial and like they've fundamentally misunderstood what Cyberpunk is.

But I'm curious enough to keep playing. I'm enjoying the techno-babble and main story. I'm not sure how far off the critical path I'll venture, but it seems okay at a discounted price.

If I didn't have expectations set from the Witcher series, I think I'd be fairly happy playing what appears to be a solid 7/10. But knowing what this studio can do, and knowing what they promised has me feeling unsure about this one. Ultimately, I'm having fun right now so I'll leave my thoughts there

That lines up with another opinion I’ve heard lately. It’s not Witcher in a cyberpunk setting, it’s not what CDPR said it would be, but it’s a decent game.

I was thinking about getting a PS5 or xbox X over the summer so i was wondering a couple of things. first, i assume that bc there is a PS5 thread and not a series x thread that PS5 is more popular with GWJ? Secondly, these things have technically been out for 2 years now, is there going to be a PS5 pro that's worth waiting for? I'm leaning towards the X as they are actually going for retail price on ebay right now, but i might change my mind if everyone at GWJ is playing PS5.

There is a Series S/X thread. Plenty of love for both around here.

My own anecdote: my Xbox Series X has been a technical crapshow. It doesn’t get along with my TVs at all, across three brands - my primary LG oled, a Samsung LED, and a Sony LED.

It generally begins to flicker 5 minutes after I turn it on. If I put it in sleep mode and wake it back up it corrects, but it will happen again after 45 minutes or so.

More subjectively, I hate the current Xbox controller with a passion. The face buttons are way too clicky and the plastic feels very cheap compared to the PS5 controller, which I love. Even compared to the Switch Pro controller.

No one has mentioned a PS5 Pro yet. And they really don't need one if the current one is sold out everywhere.

I would look at metacritic for the top games on each system and decide what to get based on which one has the most games you want to play.

Since you're waiting until the summer, you should definitely wait to see what Sony's upcoming subscription services will actually offer. If it's not much more than we know now, Game Pass is a massive plus in the Xbox column.

Yeah, I got a PS5 last year for the same reason I had a PS4: because Sony has more exclusives that I want to play and tends to have more Japanese games.

I didn’t have a reason for an XBox last generation but I may look at one in the future due to some forthcoming exclusives.

Same for PS4 and PS3. Most Xbox stuff ends up on PC.

At least some PS4 games have started come to PC eventually though, like Horizon, God of War, Persona, Disgaea, etc. It's just 2 or more years later in most cases.

Yeah, I typically go with upgrading my PC and going with one console. I've skipped the XBOX twice now because the Sony exclusives are more interesting to me in general and a lot of the MS exclusives also end up showing up on PC anyways.

That said, Sony is starting to make their titles available on PC, the video card market continues to be weird, and the perceived differences in visual quality between PC and console to me have never been lesser. (By that I mean of course PC can perform much better, but it used to be the case where I would get distracted by the amount of aliasing or texture pop-in in the console version, whereas now I'm fine with the level on detail on console and need to watch a comparison video to see what makes the PC better.)

I guess what I'm saying is I'm predicting the next generation could go either way for me: I either get neither console and stick with PC only, or I get both consoles and skip the PC for the first time in a long time.

An early look at some of the offerings coming to the new PS+ programs:

I never expected this service to measure up to Game Pass (and to be clear, I still don't think it does), but it's looking much better than I expected already. Demon's Souls, Returnal, and Miles Morales are there at launch, and the selection of 1st and 3rd party PS4 games is quite good. The selection of classic games is small, but this is only some of the launch offering, so that offering will hopefully be more expansive than what's shown here.

At the least, the extra/Premium tiers certainly look worthy of consideration for those that play exclusively on Playstation consoles. I'm quite pleased that I picked up 2 years of the Premium tier for $60/year while it was available.

One other welcome piece of news from this:

Players who have previously purchased the digital version of games from the original PlayStation and PSP generation will not have to make a separate purchase or sign up to PlayStation Plus to play these titles on PS4 or PS5. When these titles are released for PS4 and PS5, players can head to PlayStation Store and download a version for the consoles at no extra cost if they already own the digital version of the title.

It also sounds like any classic Playstation and PSP games that are offered on the service will also be made available for individual purchase which was not previously an option on the PS4 or PS5.

I hope (but don't really expect) they're doing something to upgrade the streaming experience. Out of curiosity, over the weekend I tried streaming a few PS3 titles, and found the lag to be pretty terrible. It didn't quite break the games, but in something like Arkham Origins it made the combat significantly more difficult to get the timing of melee to work, and it made simply controlling the camera really frustrating.

As it stands, I definitely wouldn't want to actually play any PS3 games via streaming; it's really only good for firing up a game for a few minutes and going "yep, that was a game that existed".

That classic thing is nice. I have several PS1/2 Classic titles I bought on PS3 and some PSP/Vita games I had on PSTV. Hopefully I can still play some of that eventually. I've kept the PS3 plugged in just in case I ever go back to those pile games.
