Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Catch-All (SPOILERS)

I liked it but it didn’t really feel that different than Discovery, just jokier.
Also if they’re going to just copy a character from The Expanse than they should just copy all the characters and get the actors from the Expanse to play those characters and set it in the universe of The Expanse and continue where the series left off. It would be an infinitely better show.

Well that's certainly a take.

I enjoyed it. It does feel good to have some episodic content. I do LOVE Anson Mount. He is so DREAMY!

I've such a mancrush on him it's silly. I also covet his hair.

I liked it but I could do without the somewhat cliche "captain who has quit pulled back in and finding renewed perpose." It feels like a drum that has been hit too often.

I would agree, except this actually fits this character perfectly. He’s seen his future, and the first time we saw Pike way back in the sixties he was also doubting whether he wanted to continue to be a captain.

My bigger nitpick was why did he beam from the shuttle to the Enterprise?

I took it to show the transporters weren't at 100% given the recent repair work that was still ongoing?

Who can explain why Number One's ship (U.S.S. Kirby iirc) was only manned by three personnel, and they all went down to the surface to conduct first contact? I guess it was just a tiny science vessel on what was supposed to be a routine science mission to analyze the subspace effects from the planet's weapons?

USS Archer - https://memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/...

Even in the future versions of the ship class it was small with a crew of 15.

I believe they were sent to investigate the warp signature coming from the planet - they weren't aware it was a warp bomb. It took the upgraded sensor from the recent drydock where Enterprise's sensors were upgraded to notice the difference.

Right, but why just three crewmembers and why would they all go down to the planet's surface?

The first five minutes of episode 2 gave us more background information on Uhura than the last 55 years combined.

OHhhh can't wait.

And for those who don't have Paramount+ or are on the fence:

If this show keeps going the way it is, it's easily going to be my second-favorite Trek, behind TNG.

There was also another pants joke, so we're 2 for 2.

Not just a pants joke, but a not-wearing-pants joke.

Oh, Uhura's entire family is also dead. Ok. She and La'an can hang. Hey writers, Uhura can be conflicted about being in Starfleet without murdering her loved ones. Ok?

That's the only real criticism I have, though.

There's one line that Ethan Peck said and from the delivery I swore was Nimoy.

Was I the only one who thought it was funny that the Shepherds were flying in a ship that kind of looked like what the Collectors were using in Mass Effect 2?

I agree so strongly that a simple 'like' just wasn't enough

Thirded.

It’s startling how different (and immediately better) this show is than Picard and Discovery

Just watched the second episode. HOLY sh*t THAT WAS SO FUN.

And please more spaceship maneuvering/evasive shots please. OMG that was porn to me. GIMME MORE PLZ.

I wonder if they re-scaled the Enterprise down to her original size from how she was depicted in DSC, because she seems a lot more nimble now.

My younger son (17) is watching it with me. Previously the only ST he's watched is Lower Decks. After episode 2 he said, "I need to find more Star Trek to watch".

Oh, we've been Final Fived.

How does this show keep getting better with each episode?

They hired writers who had actually seen TOS and TNG before?

I think this might be the answer. Three for three this show has been bangin'.

They gonna sell the bed set from Number One's quarters?

"Memento Mori" is rightly getting its due as one of the best action episodes of the franchise like "Balance of Terror" and "Year of Hell," but I can't help but notice that almost no one is mentioning the episode it shares the most DNA with, DS9's "Starship Down."

Holy sh*t this episode is amazing. Absolutely amazing. It's an homage to episodes like Disaster and Starship Down but it did its own stuff as well. LOVE it.

I was so excited to write the above I didn't notice RB called out Starship Down already. Well done!
