Monster Hunter Rise Catch-All

So at HR8, I went after a Rajang quest in the 7* list (is there another list that shows up after that?) and after barely beating it, I jumped to HR10.

Congrats on beating Rajang, btw. That's a big milestone for a new hunter.

I'm an old hunter and nowadays I just avoid it when I can.

Yeah Rajang is not the only one with a ridiculous relentless series of attacks. I've actually beaten Rajan a couple times now, and wandered into him a couple times before a quest came available in the Shrine Ruins up high, but he always ran away after a couple face-offs. I think the hardest thing is that stun always seems to come with the same double hit death combo.

Casual hunting tonight at 9PM ET
STEAM version

I just made a new character, focusing on bow right now... first hunt when I didn't know what I was doing, I ran out of time.

/watches a bow tutorial

/rolls an awesome Palico

Hunts are normal now (10 minutes or so)!

Bow is so awesome, I can't wait to unlock the second Switch skills and better bows.

9PM is pretty close to my usual bedtime, but I will do my best to stay awake

I'm going to work on Arena to get that 4th Bow Charge slot unlock...

decided to give Light Bowgun a go. That also means I'm going to jump over to M&K controls, and it's quite the mental hurdle to clear. I watched a video on remapping M&K controls and then did some adjustments that came up thanks to things they pointed out, and so far it's much better than default. If we're low ranks tonight I'll be messing around with with that. If not, one of my stadards - Hammer or Dual Blades.

Would people be interested in doing any Arena stuff tonight? I wouldn't mind getting that feather

Feather? What arena stuff?

Arena is a mode that puts you in a predetermined load out and you hunt a monster (or multiple) in an enclosed arena. You get to it by talking to Master somebody who hangs out on the outdoor dining section by the lake.

By feather I assume he means the mighty bow feather. It’s a headwear you get from doing a bunch of arena quests. It’s only good for bow use, allows for another charge level.

I got it but turns out I kinda suck at bow.

Yes, I meant the Mighty Bow Feather to unlock another charge level. I think you get it from the coins that you gain from doing arena? I'm sure you can use the coins for other things that might help you with different weapons? I actually don't know.

EDIT: And sorry, I shouldn't have answered like I did, I probably didn't need to explain what Arena was, I thought it was a question about that rather than the content of the quest/reward, about which I was being a bit too vague.

UPDATE: Looks like Mighty Bow Feather can wait, for me, as it looks like it's a High Rank piece, so no point getting it right now

I’m on as roxlimn2k.

I’m on as well, and I have created a lobby with passcode 5544.

If you don’t have me on your friendslist, I’m bobbywatson there as well.

No no, I think you did need to explain the Arena. I don't know if I've found that, or realized I had if I did.

Thanks for all the hunts tonight. Made it to HR33 from 7 earlier this week. I'm amazed at the number of monsters still coming at me. It felt like in World there were only a fraction as many (I never got super far) and they were all very similar in their visual style of the scaly / leather dinosaur look. This game feels like it has a ton more variety in the enemies, which makes the handful of locations feel a bit limited.

And here's the PC M&K controls video I watched that got me most of the way to a usable comfortable setup:

MH Rise has 46 large monsters to World's 36. Iceborne took it up to 71. If Sunbreak also roughly doubles the count, we might end up with a total in the low 90s. I'm sure at least some of those will be variants, but sometimes all it takes is new attacks to make a reused model feel like a new monster.

Phemeto has great content for gunners, though I think Tidus69 is the better resource for bow play. In addition to his informative videos, his speedruns are pure art.

For me it was Arekkz, his bow tutorial really helped me.

I went looking on Arekkz's channel and was having issue finding stuff, but didn't look too long. I was mostly focused on finding how to run M&K controls effectively. I think I'm pretty much there. I did a few different things with the palamute controls like mapping right click for jump, middle click for attack (to farm out spiribirds from the flower beds, mostly). I also mapped changed the button combos so Fanning Vault (for light bow gun) was mapped to C as I'm using a Razor Tartarus and V and G are not on the device.

Well, during our Friday session it was mentioned about earning a bunch of in game money quickly, so I finally went and watched a video by gaijinhunter on it and now have over 1.5 million monster-hunter bucks

It's quite easy and not like some games where it's a real science and slog to figure out, which is nice. Plus is it pushed me to find the 2nd camp in the lava caverns map.

It’s interesting how this has evolved. I think in previous MH titles, mining and gathering materials was more of a slog - closer to something like bolting on a Rune Factory on your Monster Hunter on the build side of it. The mining in MH feels more like a traversal challenge - like platforming at speed, but with MH mechanics. It’s surprisingly chill.

Some folks have voiced a desire to have a return of more of a survivalesque aspect to MH - like having Don’t Starve mechanics of some sort in the game.

NPC companions? Yes please!

Is anybody hunting monsters tonight?

Yep, there's an event signup in the Discord monster-hunter channel.

Can’t make it again, unfortunately

I will not be around tomorrow night, but I did beat the Ibushi / Narwa dual fight for HR50 by myself... after 5 fails. Using the light bowgun, I burned a lot of Pierce 2 and demon/armorskin potions. Definitely got combo locked a few times, too. Didn't realize there'd be a cutscene associated with it, too.

Anyone have thoughts on the Sunbreak demo? I haven’t had a chance to do anything but Izuchi and Tetranodon yet. I also can’t remember how to do silkbind attacks

It seems a discussion is happening in the GWJ Discord channel. That's also where weekly PC play sessions are organized.

Is Rise the best entry point to the series?

I'm on PC and am curious about the Monster Hunter series because I enjoyed hunting machines in Horizon Zero Dawn and heard the gameplay was similar.

It's very different, but I enjoy both. Machine fights in Horizon are generally under a minute, whereas hunts in Rise are in the 5-10 minute range.

There's a Sunbreak demo available now where you can try it out. Some of us will be playing tonight if you want to try the demo multiplayer.

Either Rise or World. I think any of the previous games are better as curiosities you can explore if you fall in love with one of the current games.

Also, I think if you’re curious, it’s better to just buy one rather than rely on a demo. It’s nice that they put the demos out but I’ve never felt they do the full experience justice.

This is very good advice.

MH demos have always been very limited in scope, to the detriment of the series. To put it another way, playing a demo wasn't even fun for me until after playing a full title first. Going all in is the way to go.
