Monster Hunter Rise Catch-All

There’s no cross platform online play right?

Nope.

That looks awesome!

So why do some weapons feel like they're so weak (dual blades, great sword) compare to others (Hammer)? I went from running dual blades and jumped over to hammer while playing on Switch for the trial, and I was shocked how fast I was ending hunts and breaking parts with the hammer. Then I gave great sword (or was it lance, or both?) a go on PC and feel it is similarly weak. I jumped into the area to test weapons out and gunlance and charge blade both feel good there, but haven't given them a test on a hunt since it was way too late last night already.

What are the good solo weapons? I looked up gunlance it seems like the tutorial I saw stated it gets better in high rank when gaining access to (more?) ammo types. Again, it was late. I'm pretty happy with the hammer, but if I'm solo, don't I need something to switch to so I can cut tails better?

I main a different weapon each time I start a new game/character. Apprentice of all trades, master of none. So to me, the grass is always greener because I am rather rubbish!

On Switch MHR, I mained Lance and had a good old time. On PC MHR I tried gunlance but couldn't gel with it. Running sword and shield and having a riot so far.

I ran hammer in MH World and that's probably the closest I have ever come to being decent at the game. Ended up having to rely on multiplayer hunts for tail cuts though.

All of them are good solo weapons. If a weapon feels weak to you, you might just not understand how to use it properly yet. You're probably looking at 10 - 15% difference in kill times between the best and worst solo weapons.

However, some weapons are far easier to learn than others, and hammer is definitely on the easier end of the spectrum. Great sword isn't a difficult weapon, but it is extremely unintuitive if you're picking it up for the first time. Using the greatsword properly often means spending more time with your weapon sheathed than unsheathed which can feel incredibly awkward until you get used to it.

I highly suggest checking out a weapon video guide from Arrekz, Gaijinhunter, or someone similar on YouTube for weapons you want to learn. There is far more nuance to weapons in Monster Hunter than most other games, even for the simplest looking weapons.

The correct answer is bow.

It is curious that you would go from dual blades and great sword (two of the best speed running weapons) and go to hammer (one of the worst speed running weapons) and notice an increase in performance! That said, all of the weapon classes and all of the weapons are absolutely viable and if you're good enough you should be able to finish hunts with rank-appropriate gear at something like 15-25 minutes without a great deal of difference. Basically, the largest determinant of how well you do isn't the weapon class - it's you.

One of things I felt about all this is also that as you get more familiar with the game and the monster, various weapon classes will feel easier and do better than others. That is, some weapons will be better for when you have no idea what the monster's moveset is, and other weapons will absolutely allow you to demolish the monster when you can fully exploit its openings.

Basically, choose what you have fun with because that's literally the most important thing. If you're having fun, you do more hunts, you enjoy the grind and therefore you get better with that specific weapon class as well as the game. Once you're comfy with a monster, you can try out other weapon classes to see if you enjoy their mechanics. Killing monsters in record time doesn't matter if you didn't like the hunt. I mean that very literally. Many people have LBGs and Longswords in Rise (including me) because those are two of the weapons that deal the most damage in endgame. We use them to cheese monsters for parts when we just want to get through an annoying grind. But we always go back to our faves.

Is MH Rise on sale?

It is in Steam, don’t know about Switch.

Physical version is on sale in a few places according to deku deals.

If you're going to buy now, I do recommend weighing it against buying the bundle that will be released this June with Sunbreak.

That's the calculus, I suppose. Sale price now plus DLC, or game with DLC included later.

EDIT: Currently the Steam sale puts Rise at CA $52.79 and CA $49.99 for the Sunbreak DLC. Totals 102.78

The Rise + Sunbreak Set I can't find a price for yet on Steam.

I'll probably wait for June.

I bought now since I liked the game when I finally played the trial, it was at a lowest price yet for PC, and I'm unlikely to bother with Sunbreak as I'll probably be done with the game when it comes out, and I'd be hard pressed to drop $40 on DLC regardless of my commitment to the game.

My situation is of course clouded by the fact that I already have the Switch version

If anyone's looking for the PC/Steam version of MH Rise on sale, check Fanatical's Star deal. (45% off)

https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/monster-hunter-rise

nearly 11 hours left for the deal now as of 12AM ET

I've been enjoying the game on PC lately. Hit Village rank 6 and HR6. Come jump in and I could be convinced to play MP. 2 hrs left on the sale.

I'll be getting started on it soon! I caved and double dipped on the Steam version. too bad there's no cross save

Does anyone want to gather for Friday or Thursday night hunts in MH Rise on Steam?

Absolutely!

Edit: My HR is somewhere between 30 and 40. I'm about to get to

Spoiler:

Teostra.

Sure but not the week of May 6th, or night of May 20th. I think it'd be enlightening to bring my sophomoric self along on a hunt with veterans.

Just hit HR7

I'm down. What time are you thinking?

I'll have to spend some time getting to at least HR7 with a new character, but maybe like Fri April 29th? I'm on the east coast time zone so maybe 9PM?

I just realized Thursdays are no good for me, lol. So Friday hunting?

@bobbywatson boom boom time

I’m game for some hunting on Fridays. I hope to see everyone there.

I'll set a reminder for Friday at 9PM ET. Haven't played in a while, so that'll give me time to file the rust off.

For anyone on the fence: The base game is currently 50% off on Steam at the moment.

So at HR8, I went after a Rajang quest in the 7* list (is there another list that shows up after that?) and after barely beating it, I jumped to HR10. Is jumping multiple ranks once you get past 7 each time you finish a hunt how that usually works?

Also, when I have a full health bar, get hit and stunned, and then followed up with another attack that carts me. And this has happened on a few different monsters. Is that typical? Am I expected to have maxed out armor to be able to survive?

Before you reach HR8, your HR is tied to the quest ranking. In the background, each quest is worth a certain amount of XP, and once you're past HR8, those XP points are used to calculate the HR. If I remember correctly, you should now be able to rank up all the way to 20, and then the HR will be locked at 20 again until you complete the next urgent quest.

The snarky answer is that if you don’t get hit, you don’t need armor.

Getting two-shot by specific powerful attacks is the norm in rank-appropriate hunts. In fact, it’s expected that at least one attack will one-shot you. Absolutely do not get hit by that attack. The two-shotters are also supposed to be powerful and serious attacks, but you’re less constrained to avoid them at all costs. The rest of the monster’s attacks are supposed to deal less damage than that.

Monster’s attacks also build up a hidden STUN meter that can stun you regardless of your health bar. If you take too many hits in a row, the meter builds up. So if you get hit by too many attacks quickly, even if they’re not big hitting attacks, concentrate on defense for a while (maybe a minute). You won’t want to get tagged by a two-shotter when your STUN meter is critical.

The downside of getting Rise right now is that you may get it for cheaper as a bundle in two months or less. The upside of getting Rise right now is that there are a bunch of players getting ready for when Sunbreak drops so a lot of people are farming up quests and mats so they hit the ground running in June. You can hitch a ride on that wave of helpers if you buy and play the game right now.
