Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

Nintendo bought some land to build a new R&D building to expand capabilities, but not planned to be ready until 2028. Seems like maybe they could have been working on that already since they've had troubles getting out games even through the Wii U lifetime. Hopefully they'll be building up staff to fill the building at opening, or soon after.

That's the blandest, most boring office building I've ever seen. It's like the Nintendo Wii of office buildings.

They took the top of the Xbox Series X and made it their building walls.

That's because it matches the existing buildings around it. Boring and easy to sell to anyone on the outside, all the fun and creativity on the inside. Here's the the google maps location. Street view confirms both buildings are pretty much exactly like that rendering.

New My Nintendo reward. You can get a Kirby shopping bag for 600 Platinum points... and $6.99 shipping. Bah!

For those not paying attention to individual threads and news, we got 2 upcoming big Nintendo release dates announced this week. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 got a surprise early release date of July 29th instead of the 'September' we were given previously. Splatoon 3 got a release date of September 9th, which I was thinking was going to be June or July. Links are to the respective GWJ threads.

.

I honestly think they switched places due to Splatoon needing some more finishing touches, and once BotW 2 was delayed to next year, Xenoblade got some extra staff to wrap it up. Certainly a lot of dates shifting from expectations.

EDIT: Now that I'm thinking about it, why in the world did they not just do a Direct for all of this? All of these announcements and a few others would have been great material for a Direct of some sort.

Also, maybe I'm talking to myself, having posted the last 3 posts here...

Need em both. But not sure if day 1...

Saw some speculation about this and liked their thoughts

Digital Foundry Reiterates That, No, Breath Of The Wild 2 Is "Not Too Big For Switch"

Yearly financials dropped earlier today. Here's the PDF.
Metroid: Dread is the best selling Metroid title, Mario Kart 8 sold 9.95 M units, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land sold 2.1 M in it's first 2 weeks, outpacing Star Allies. Hardware sales didn't meet lowered projections due to limited semiconductor supply, but software exceeded raised expectations.

Also, an Indie World Showcase tomorrow at 10:00AM Eastern.

Just had to google "star allies". I'm wondering whether Lego Palpatine Saga was included in that timeline, as it seems to be selling where on all platforms so I imagine also on Switch where I got it.

Nobody's talking about this?

There's actually a few interesting looking titles. Every trailer below was also accompanied by dev comments and some gameplay.

ElecHead looks like a really intuitive and satisfying platform puzzler with some nice retro chiptunes. I just wish the aesthetic was a bit nicer.

Gunbrella surprised me in that initially when I saw it I thought it'd be a pass, but as the trailer went on it looked better.

Another Crab's Treasure looks like a nice change of pace and environment to the soulslike formula. Not so sure they will nail the mechanics, though.

And there was plenty more I think others would find really interesting, like Ooblets, some card games, narrative based games, and even a management sim.

I didn't see anything that I really cared about but I happy you see some interesting stuff.

I always enjoy watching to see what surprise games release today.

But I swear they are usually at lunch or end of day. This was too early for me

That Crab-souls game looks interesting, and so does Opus, but for some reason this one direct felt a little meh in general.

I thought Gunbrella was the standout, and I'm sure a lot of people will be excited for Ooblets?

I bought this controller because...well I like toys and I have to say it is the best controller I have had for the Switch. Or at least tied with the official pro controller.

GuliKit (No Stick Drift) KingKong 2 Pro Wireless Controller

It feels wonderful. It also has rumble, gyro and can wake the Switch up from sleep

Is there any known source that has looked at those Gulikit controllers and provided a review / impressions? I'm in the market for another pro-style controller and was thinking an 8BitDo Pro 2, formerly the SN30 Pro+

The 8BitDo still doesn't wake the Switch, but they added some functionality, including an app with button remapping on the fly, a button for switching profiles, added back paddles and some other stuff, all for the same price. In fact, my Amazon wishlisted SN30 Pro+ changed to the Pro2, so it seems that's just the new version.

Me! I am a source!

I have been using it all the time and love it. I was playing Breath of the Wild and discovered when I pulled back the bow that it even had gyro aiming! All it all it is the best thing I have tried - or at least tied with the official Pro Controller.

Thanks for the video, Kurrelgyre. I appreciate the discussion of the stick and button style, shape, texture and such. That's more of what I was looking for beyond the 'I'm using it and it is great' comments, which still hold a good deal of weight from regulars around here (except with those I've noted over the years that my opinions do not line up with, which is ok to have some like that )

For that price, why buy it over the pro controller? Is it mainly the macro cheat button? Or better hand feel? Genuinely wondering since I am not clear what the advantage is.

According to the marketing, the advantage is the new tech they're using for the analog sticks that eliminate drift without the need for a dead zone. That sounds like a long-term advantage though, and not something that's going to factor heavily into folks' initial impressions.

Honestly there is no logical reason - it is personal preference on the feel. I like the way this one feels slightly more than the Pro.

Since we are a household that holds onto and returns to playing systems long term, it is kinda a big factor. I've actually looked into fixing up my old N64 controllers, which is pretty much an exercise in cleaning and prepping them to last as long as possible.

8-BitDo has an interesting new controller coming soon.

It lays flat on a desk with a no-slip back and all the triggers are buttons on the face. They say it was designed for accessibility, which is awesome, but I think it looks interesting just in general.

Newish Switch owner here and I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a portable solution for a dock. Would like to to something small and easy to pack as one of the big reasons I got the Switch was to have a simple to pack gaming solution for vacations and work trips. I am already packing a 4 port 63 watt charger that can charge the Switch and my phone and laptop (everything else) so I am looking for something that is basically just USB-C input for power and HDMI output (cable integrated would be nice but not required).

I have been considering this one or this one. Anyone out there use either of them?

On the controller question/discussion:

When I first got my Switch I was making use of the 8BitDo Pro 2 with it and it was fine. I like it a lot for playing the NES/SNES/Genesis games where the digital D-Pad is your primary input, but I found I didn't like it so much for modern games where you use the left analog stick more. I mostly play games with an Xbox controller so I am more comfortable with that layout (and having the AB/XY buttons switched is still messing me up after a month of owning the Switch). I picked up the official Pro controller and like it, but I kind of wish I had seen that Gulikit controller before I bought it.

The Genki covert dock is the portable dock I’ve used and would recommend. You can also get it through Amazon I believe. It was built designed and tested specifically for the Switch and works flawlessly for me. I’ve considered using it as my dedicated home dock so I can keep my switch inside my grip when I dock, but I also like the feel of sliding it into the official dock. So the Genki goes in my bag.

This is one thing that surprised me about the Switch. I thought the Dock would be finicky and tough to line up correctly (especially after I switched out the Joycons for the Hori Split Pad Pro and because I have it hidden behind my TV because my TV is about the same width as the stand it is on), but it is surprisingly smooth and simple.
