General VR Catch-All

I wish Ultrawings 2 was cross buy. I want the portability of the Quest version but the PC version just looks so much better.

Bought the Humble Bundle.
Started up Pistol Whip. Hubris made me choose normal difficulty. I wasn't expecting to end up on my knees, twisting and contorting to avoid bullets. After laying there panting I realized that someone had mentioned something about 'beat' and 'music' or something. Backing down to easy, turning up the music, and getting my groove on made the next few rounds much more satisfying. Then I discovered that I could just select dual wielding from a menu and then I was having fun. 90/100 Would murder again.

There's a knack with Pistol Whip that I'm going to spoiler in case people enjoy figuring it out for themselves and/or feel like it's kind of a cheese that breaks that game

Spoiler:

The bullets that are shot at you move very slowly. So if you're constantly moving your head (which is the hitbox) through a large circle, by the time the enemy bullet gets to where you where when it was fired, you're already out of the way.

I do a "stand left, squat left, squat right, stand right, repeat" kind of circle so I've got 4 "positions" I'm cycling through. Not particularly quickly either, you don't want to get back to a position to meet a bullet there.

Once that becomes second nature, I can largely ignore the hail of bullets on Hard and concentrate on firing on the beat.

Definitely gonna feel like Leg Day tho.

I have no idea what I just watched but I clicked 'like' afterwards.

Letterkenny is so good

Unofficial mod. I’d welcome more HL Alyx. Would be nice to see new full conversion content built on top of the Alyx base one day.

AirLink for Quest doesn’t pass through a Bluetooth Xbox controller connected to the headset. This sucks when I want to stream a non-VR game from my PC to the headset so I can play from anywhere in my house. I have to use a controller connected to the PC which greatly limits how far from the PC I can be. I’ve heard that Virtual Desktop does pass through the controller. Anyone here have experience with how well that works?

I tried ages ago but it worked fairly well then (and this was from my headset at my parents house streaming from my PC at my house). Virtual Desktop is really fantastic.

Thanks. I think I’ll give it a try.

When you were connecting remotely were you logging into the computer (Windows login screen) through the stream or did you leave your PC unlocked? Air Link doesn’t seem to let you unlock a PC over the stream so I have to log into the machine physically first.

I believe virtual desktop lets you unlock your computer. If that does t work, you could setup Google remote desktop and do it from a phone. Can't remember which I used.

I’m only using it locally but it does let me unlock the computer directly. No other app needed.

Controller works great so far with 2 minor issues. I have to unplug the controller connected directly to the PC or it treats the Oculus connected Xbone controller as a second controller and some games I tried don’t handle that well. Also, if I accidentally press the big Xbox button in the middle of the controller it hides Virtual Desktop and sends me back to the Oculus dashboard. Neither is really much of a problem.

The input latency is not bad for streaming but still noticeable. No surprise there. It’s roughly the same as I get using Steam Link or similar. Just means I’m unable to play a few types of games similar to when using other streaming services. Works great for slower games and desktop use so far. Unsurprisingly Rocket League is impossible over this.

The main diff I noticed compared to other non-VR streaming is that fast turning cameras in games now cause some motion sickness. Halo Infinite was pretty rough. Elden Ring a bit rough as well.

I tried using a Bluetooth mouse connected to the headset and while it did move the remote cursor I couldn’t see the cursor. Gotta figure out if there’s a fix for that. The Oculus controllers are mostly good as a mouse replacement as long as I don’t need precise clicking.

I can’t stream my Xbox Series X directly to the Oculus but I can stream it to the PC inside virtual desktop. Definitely added latency and video artifacts but it will work well for some stuff. This is where not being able to use the Xbox button on the controller is a little annoying but I can still use the mouse to trigger that with a click.

I still get terrible motion sickness from BONEWORKS unfortunately so I don't see myself getting the new BONELAB one any time soon

Looks cool tho

Fanatical has a “build your own bundle” of Oculus Quest games on now:

Only game on there I’ve played is Accounting+ so I have no idea if they are any good

I can recommend A Fisherman's Tale (really neat puzzle game with a recursive space mechanic), and Carly & The Reaperman (as long as you've got someone else to play co-op with, one person in VR, the other with a controller on the monitor - note that you can do it over Steam's Remote Play Together feature, so the person with the controller can be at their own computer in their own house).

Unplugged: Air Guitar for Quest is 40% off at Fanatical. This game depends on hand tracking which makes me lean towards not getting it since so far my experience with hand tracking (on Quest 2) has not been good. Apparently they did just push a hand tracking improvement update to Quest tho so I should try it again.

Pretty good pick your own bundle over on Fanatical. I picked up 6 games I wanted (Doom VFR, The Invisible Hours, Unplugged: Air Guitar, Soundself: A Technodelic, The Morrigan, Stargaze) and then chucked in OhShape, Racket: Nx, Yupitergrad, and Zero Caliber because why not. $5 a VR game is a good deal!

Oh man, OH MAN. Resident Evil 4 VR added mercenaries mode and it's SO much fun. It's just a little time attack/arcade high-score deal, set in a small arena.

I still can't cope with long VR sessions so this is absolutely perfect. I'm having a blast trying to beat my high scores and unlock everything!

On the Quest? Is there any co-op?

I actually just uninstalled HLA because I realised I was getting motion sick in it due to framedrops. Even on low settings, my PC stutters a bit too much to make it playable for me (R5 2600, 16gb RAM, 1070ti). It appears fine at first, and the frame smoothing helps, but eventually all the little slowdowns do something to my head and make me queezy.

On one hand, I'm happy to know my VR motion sickness isn't as bad as I thought, but on the other, I really wish I could play these amazing HLA mods!

Is that the same voice actor for the narrator fellow? If not, it sounds very similar. If so, I wonder how they recruited him!

Also, speaking of beautiful VR games that barely run on my hardware.

This demo absolutely blew me away. Stunning. This is what VR was made for.

I used a new PC and the opportunity of a clean install of Skyrim VR to finally give Wabbajack a try for a mod collection. I chose the FUS collection and used the full profile 'FUS RO DAH'. Roughly 200 mods and enhancements, it was very simple install and setup and very well documented. This is the way. And boy does it look and play fantastic. FUS even includes PLANCK now. Amazing stuff these modders have done to turn this into a true VR gem.

Skyrim is likely my favorite game of all time if you go by hours played, all versions. I dipped into the VR version for 120 hours before, this will no doubt hook me for yet another long run through.

Do yourself a favor and purchase Walkabout Mini Golf (and the DLC) during the Steam VR sale. Best $17 you will spend on VR content (plus multiplayer)!

Walkabout is great fun and is cross platform with Quest. I'd be happy to play with any GWJers who might be interested.

COMPOUND just reached 1.0 yesterday, and IMO is the best game in the VR sale even though it's 0% off.

I picked up Walkabout as well during last sale, only played one round so far but liked it enough to grab the DLC this sale.

Oh, there's a demo. These days games with "hardcore" and "tough as nails" in the description are a nope for me, but it looks good so maybe I will be surprised.

Yeah, I wouldn't categorize COMPOUND as "tough as nails". I mean, like any roguelike, the difficulty ramps up the deeper you go. But it has different difficulty levels (with different content IIRC), and on the middle difficulty, the early levels are still very easy IMO.
