NFL 2022: The draft thread

Arrests is an interesting metric. Is that more reflective of anything to do with the team, or with the cities in which the players live or work?

NO, NOT YOU

Oh you don't have to worry about that.

If the price isn't insane it makes too much sense for the Packers. So it won't happen.

I think an interesting move here would be for the Seahawks to take Jordan Love. The price for DK would obviously be more than just Love, but Seattle getting a QB without burning their first round pick would certainly open up some more roster building possibilities.

But ugh I don't want to think about facing the Packers in the playoffs with DK on the roster. I was very happy to have the Packers be a bit less scary for the time being.

Oh that makes way too much sense for both sides. Didn't even think of the Jordan Love factor balancing out maybe 2/3rd round pick value in the trade.

So ya it totally won't happen and queue some team getting into DKs head with a massive extension promise. Can see him wanting Adams/Hill money and a team happily planting the seed he's already worth that.

Eagles and Saints just shuffled around a lot of draft picks.

The Hot Take Machine (aka Twitter) seems to think the Saints got fleeced because they gave up a third-round pick (2022), a first-round pick (2023) and a second-round pick (2024) for the No. 19 pick in this year's draft. Oh, and by swapping picks with the Eagles the Saints just moved up two spots in the middle of the first round (from 18 to 16).

Eagles still have two firsts (15th and 18th) and the Saints now have two firsts (16th and 19th).

I don't think moving up two spots will be good enough to grab Checkdown Kenny Two Gloves Pickett, however.

So New Orleans basically traded a next-year 1st and a two-years-from-now 2nd in order to get a 1st this year. The rest is just some minor value shuffling.

I don't think that's all that awful a move value-wise, although it is a curious one.

Either there are two players in the middle of the 1st that the Saints are hot to get...

... or this is a move to get more ammunition in this year's draft to trade up further. Trade 16 and 19 to the Jets for 4 or the Giants for 5?

I think the move makes complete sense for the Eagles though. They were overly flush with draft picks (9 picks in the first 5 rounds, thanks to two extra 1sts and two extra 5ths), and it makes sense to spread that value out a bit more. You can only have so many rookies make your roster in any given year, and if you were to hit on all three 1st rounders, having their option and contract years all come up at the same time would be rough.

But what does the Hot Tub Time Machine think?

Saw a report that the Browns are exploring trading for Houston WR Brandin Cooks.

First thought: Cleveland's just gonna become Houston North or something?

Second thought: Geez does every team that gets Brandin Cooks want to trade him away by year 3?

Third thought: Hang on, what player in NFL history has been traded the most times?

Turns out, Cooks is already tied for #2, with 3 trades (Brandon Marshall, Randy Moss). The only player above him is Eric Dickerson, with 4.

Because it's the Saints, I always want to think the worst. Ergo, they got fleeced.

Today's speculation is that maybe NO is amassing a bunch of picks to jump way up the draft to pick a QB (specifically Malik Willis) or maybe an LT (because Terron Armstead left). The latter scenario makes more sense, as Willis is probably a reach no matter where you take him in the first round.

The top six picks are Jags, Lions, Texans, Jets, Giants and Panthers. Assuming the Jags take an edge rusher, the next five teams all need good O-linemen, and two (Lions and Panthers) might end up taking a QB. It's probable that the top three O-linemen prospects will be gone by the sixth pick. A couple of the QBs might be gone, too, because teams are weird about QBs (and for good reason).

Smart play for Carolina would be to trade down and still get the QB they want, assuming there's not much market for Kenny Checkdown Twogloves outside of Charlotte. But I can't see the Saints trading with another NFC South team. Lot of interesting moving parts for sure.

Update: All signs* point to the Saints drafting a QB: They just released future franchise QB Blake Bortles.

* In case you weren't convinced after the Saints signed Andy Dalton last week. That still leaves the Saints with seven QBs (give or take) on the roster, none of them worth a damn.

It would be just terrible if the Panthers, Saints, and Falcons all reached for a QB in the draft.

I have a Jordan Love if they are interested.

Would make room to sign..... Blake Bortles!

Listen, don't screw with the numeric perfection of the NFC South right now; we've got former #1 pick Jameis Winston, former #2 pick Marcus Mariota, and former #3 pick Sam Darnold all as starters. You know with that much correctly-scouted draft capital starting at QB, things are looking great for those teams.

Which means, time for Brady to retire again, and for Tampa to acquire the QB most recently drafted with the 4th overall pick...

My former team has a serial sexual assaulter. Does that count?

Uh yeah I guess. Was there an actual arrest?? Also arrested for what on that list?? If it’s for possession of weed that’s a bullsh*t arrest IMO. We are long overdue to legalize that nationally.

A South Carolina senator has a hot take on the Panthers' owner about what appears to be a failed deal to build a new HQ and practice facility in Rock Hill:

"David Tepper came to Rock Hill promising us Jerry Jones and ever since then he’s given us Dan Snyder.”

Ouch. That's going to leave a mark.

PS: I don't know who's at fault; Rock Hill was supposed to issue bonds to pay for its share of construction costs and apparently changed their minds about that particular financing vehicle. But the fault is mostly Tepper's. What did he expect trying to do business in the Lesser of the Two Carolinas?

Wait, there is a lesser of the Carolinas? I thought both of them were pretty bad.

I'll take the one with Charlotte, but as places to visit, Charleston and Columbia are both very nice.

Spoiler:

And if we want to get P&C, don't blame the people (especially POC) for centuries of slavery, apartheid, and forced ignorance because of the unchecked power of rich, white (former) enslavers and their descendants.

:)

That depends upon whether you prefer mustard sauce or vinegar sauce.

I have no personal quibble with our southern neighbor. I honeymooned in Folly Beach, and my dinner at Magnolia's is one of the best meals of my life. However, North Carolina state law requires me to refer to the constituent political entity to the south (but not its people) as "lesser," "less than" "not suitable to carry our jockstrap if a state wore a jockstrap" or simply "a cesspool." Violation of this law is a misdemeanor punishable by having to watch highlights of successful USCe football seasons, which mercifully runs for only 3 minutes.

North Carolina law (for now) is neutral on the issue of how to refer to the state that has blessed us all with Florida Man.

Truly a culinary abomination. It's the sauce for people who use barbecue as a verb and think HEY DARNOLD might get it together in his second season in Charlotte.

Only one Carolina school won an NCAA championship in basketball this year...

Bortles may be out of a job, but the Bucs refused to let Gabbert get away. He re-signed with Tampa today.

I don't wish injury on anyone, but if Brady could find reason to exit football in the middle of a season, it would be much appreciated.

Mac Jones has been holding workouts with some of his receivers in the Tampa area.

DeVante Parker linked up with them after getting traded to the team.

Not present at those workouts? N'Keal Harry. Which probably confirms the suspicion that he won't be a Patriot this year. The fact that the team hasn't cut him, though, indicates he's probably going to be on the draft weekend trade block.

Hey jowner! I found a receiver for you...

Not only N'Keal wasn't there, but Bourne also posted this on his IG at one point (and then deleted it):

Jordan Love and a 7th!

That might be overpaying actually.

I just want to see Jordan Love play football. He's from Bakersfield, so yet another Central Valley QB that should have been recruited to Fresno State by that fool Tim DeRuyter, but wasn't, and instead went to the only FBS offer they got.

Fresno should have had Josh Allen and Jordan Love. I will go to my grave cursing Tim DeRuyter.
