The GWJ CRPG Club - Part 1 - Old Thread

Our brave leader seems to be MIA. Should we continue on without him?

Hope GB is okay. I know he was struggling to find time to post in past quarters, so yeah, I would think if we want the CRPG club to continue on, someone else should at least handle the voting for this coming quarter.

If I recall, last time this happened we just chose the second-place game from the previous vote. I personally would be happy to play Skyrim.

He’s been updating his youtube regularly so maybe just not visiting the forums.

Shall we kick things off? If Blitz resurfaces then he can take over - assuming he wants to! - and we’ll follow the usual process, if we accelerate the time frame slightly.

To that I I would suggest that we start nominating. As per usual, you can nominate 1 game, but second as many as you like. I propose we close voting on this by 6pm (GMT) on Tuesday 29th March. 2 and a bit days should be long enough? That should give us time to come up with a result by the end of the week, even if we are moving things forward a lot quicker than we usually do.

I’ll start proceedings with Baldur’s Gate 2 just because.

I’m not sure I can change the thread title to say voting underway though. If we get a clear preference at the list (2nd) stage, I might recommend we forgo the usual final round and just go with the favourite.

How does that sound?

Edit: typed all that before I saw Math’s post above. If people would rather play Skyrim then I’m happy to go with the flow. Blitz has done an amazing job with this club since it’s inception, but if he wants to stand back I’m happy to take it forward - unless someone else wants to?

Let's maybe split the difference?

I'll second Baldur's Gate 2 and nominate Skyrim.

I’ll second Skyrim and nominate Expedition: Vikings.

I'm not opposed to doing the usual nomination/pick6/vote procedure. I'll nominate Dragon Age II because it's been a while since the club played Dragon Age: Origins.

OK Cool. I take we are all happy to move forward then? I'll second Expedition: Vikings. So far we have:

Nominated and Seconded

Baldurs Gate 2
Skyrim
Expeditions: Vikings

Nominated but not Seconded

Dragon Age 2

I’ll second DA2, and nominate Monster Sanctuary. It’s a monster collector meets Metroidvania, with a lot of fun team composition mechanics to play around with.

I nominate Torchlight per the norm.

Continuing the theme of sequels from previous club games, I'll nominate Pillars of Eternity 2.

Thanks for running with this, Sorbicol!

I'll second Pillars 2

Then I'll go with nominating Shadowrun: Hong Kong.

I’ll second Shadowrun: Hong Kong, which I also considered nominating even though I already played it.

OK, so with slightly over 24 hours remaining we have the following Nominations:

Nominated and Seconded

Baldurs Gate 2
Skyrim
Expeditions: Vikings
Dragon Age 2
Shadowrun: Hong Kong
Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire

Nominated but not Seconded

Monster Sanctuary
Torchlight

Note: If we only end up with 6 or 7 nominated and seconded games I might just skip the "pick 6" part and just move straight to ranked choices. Should save us some time. We'll see how we go.

For folks who have already played BG2, did you import a BG1 party, or start anew?

I’ve played through BG2 two or three times in my life with a brand new character. Never finished BG1 or imported.

More or less a 2 hour warning. I’ll be fairly strict (read really very strict!) on the timing with this as we are compressing the voting schedule a bit.

Unless there is a glut of nominations in the next 2 hours I’ll move straight to ‘Ranked Choice’ voting, unless I hear any serious objections.

Seconding Torchlight.

Game 18: Ranked Choice Voting

So, stealing wholesale from how Godzilla Blitz used to do this, we're ready for the next stage. I am going to move straight to Ranked Choice voting given we only have 7 games on our list.

In this round, please rank the following seven games in order of your preference for play. Please vote based on what you'll play with the group. You do not have to rank every game. This round of voting will run until 7pm GMT (12pm CST) on Friday, 1st April (no fools!) While this technically is a day over date it does give us a little more time for voting and sets us up for the Weekend. (More voting details are at the bottom of the post if you're wondering how this works.)

I've updated the candidates with their Steam Listings. There is no sale on at the moment but given it's Easter in a few weeks I would assume there'll be various Spring Sales on in the coming weeks.

Candidates
Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition (79 Hours)
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition (117 hours)
Expeditions: Vikings (35 Hours)
Dragon Age 2 Complete (including all DLC) (37 hours)
Shadowrun: Hong Kong - Extended Edition (43 hours)
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire (61 hours)
Torchlight (21.5 hours)

Quick list of ease of Voting:

Baldur's Gate 2
Skyrim
Expeditions: Vikings
Dragon Age 2
Shadowrun: Hong Kong
Pillar of Eternity II: Deadfire
Torchlight

How to Vote (Or what I copy and pasted from GB's last voting round)

1. Please rank the candidates in your order of preference of play, with the game you want to play the most at the top of your list.

2. You may rank as many games as you’d like. You do not need to rank all the games. However, keep in mind that a game in the bottom half of your ranking could win. Ranking at least all the games you would play is a good idea.

3. If you do not want to rank a particular game, please make sure to delete/omit it from your list. (Don’t simply leave the unranked games at the bottom of your list.)

How We’ll Determine a Winner - Elimination Style

Basically, we’ll keep running through the rankings, eliminating the game with the lowest number of top-preference votes, until we have one game that has gotten a majority of the votes. I could write a bazillion words to explain details, but this one-minute video does it better than that:

*For elimination rounds, if we have ties at the bottom of the voting pile, I'll break them by looking at second place votes, so we only eliminate one game each elimination round.

Knock yourselves out.
