Tunic Fox All

Pages

Tunic is finally out! I've been waiting for this Zelda/Souls/Fox thing forever, and it is gorgeous. Actually runs really well in 4K on my old 1080 thankfully since it's not out on PS5, and I can't get a 3080. Very excited to dig into this game as a big Zelda/FEZ fan. I didn't realize Lifeformed did the soundtrack too, which is tickling me to death. He did the soundtrack to the Double Fine documentary and Dustforce along with some other stuff. Haven't heard anything from him in years.

It's so good! Loving it so far.

Going to put this here to hopefully garner some more attention, because this game deserves it.

I tried it out last night after reading a review and gosh do I adore it. Zelda mixed with dark souls? Yes please!!

Got the soundtrack on at lunch. So good!

Edit: It's got some real Final Fantasy XIII or just general FF vibes on a few songs which is surprising me.

I love the way you find pages of the game manual scattered around the world, slowly revealing bits of the game's mechanics and secrets. They're so well done!

Anyone find the shield yet?

I played this a bit last night and bounced right off. I'm not a fan of Souls games anyway, so maybe that's not surprising. When you hit enemies, they flash orange. When they're about to attack, they flash purple. I could never see the purple flashes in the middle of all the orange flashing. Whenever I did see it and hit the roll button, at least half the time I was locked into an animation, so didn't roll.

I died probably a dozen times before I got the sword, then another five or six after I got it. Decided if I was dying that much at the very beginning, it didn't bode well for how the rest of the game would go.

It's very cute though.

Played some more just now. Haven't got the shield yet. Got to some areas where the dodge isn't quite good enough to get by without the shield. Loving everything so far! Just need more time and energy to play...

You’ll find the shield later than you than you think you should.

Almost finished the Waypoint interview with the main creator, Andrew Shouldice... really fun listen.

I just got it now. It's not particularly far in and in the main starting area. You have to figure out how to beat or get around a harder enemy who's:

Spoiler:

guarding a key

Many similar games have you hoarding consumables. That’s not the way to get ahead in this game…

I love how it shows where you are on the drawn maps with a little fox icon. That manual is amazing. I'm finding tons of cool stuff now. I adore everything about this game. I can't believe how it keeps surprising me.

Rang the west bell. Good boss!

Same! Just got passed him today and I discovered what happens if you hold A on the flat platforms! Need to find where to go next. I love how the manual makes sense after you start trying things and it's actually pretty descriptive in the images. Adoring every little thing in this game. Oh, got the shield as well!

Probably not a big deal to anyone, but you miiiight want to spoiler a little bit of that... Was a wonderful:

Spoiler:

Ah hah! moment. I just loved my feeling of "you devilish developer bastards... that option was probably there the whole time!" I really like the effect when the monoliths activate/deactivate or whatever. The audio almost sounds like screaming at the end. It's really cool but kinda creepy.

I can't wait to get into some more secrets. I do hope none of the bosses are all that much harder than the west bell boss. That was about as high a difficulty as I like. Took me about 4 tries I think. I know there are a bunch of closed doors throughout that will probably be available at some point.

Speaking of audio - some of the sound effects (one in particular) sounds a lot like something from Fez. Anyone else get that vibe? Of course, the whole "made-up language" also feels quite Fez-like, too.

I started playing this afternoon, and before ya know it, I had rang both east and west bells, and I feel like I'm nearing the end of the next section. Very satisfying gameplay. I've died a lot. A. Lot. And I still have no idea what 75% of the items do.

I prob get equal parts FEZ, LttP, and Souls I think.

I just discovered the coolest thing! So, I'm a little past ringing the East Bell.

Spoiler:

If you do the hold down A thing for 3 seconds by the "Here Lies the Hero" graves, it warps you! I just did it, so I don't know what you get. I remember at least one other spot I can go do this.

So far, this game has surprising depth that I was not expecting.

WTF. I tried that, but it kept activating the message instead of doing the thing.

Heheh, gotta back up just a smidge.

Played this for a little bit, have managed to get just a little past ringing the first bell. I'm really loving this game! I've read comparisons to Death's Door. I think of the Zelda/Dark Souls influence, Tunic is more Zelda, Death's Door is more Dark Souls, if that makes sense. Which is probably why I'm enjoying Tunic a lot more.

Also, finding pages of the manual is a mix of both brilliance and nostalgia.

Yeah, the in-game manual pages is amazing. I love scouring through each page as I get them, looking for tidbits.

My favorite manual tidbit is the note scribble with an arrow pointing at your house.

Mostly working on other stuff today, but I managed to get the the library. So cool.

Reached the library as well last night. The

Spoiler:

boss is crazy hard

so I think I'll leave that alone for now and see if I can get into another zone for now.

Spoiler:

I didn't even see the boss (The Librarian), so I'm not sure how that goes. I just figured out the portalling and left. Looks pretty manacing in the manual.

I also left trying to best the East Forest guardian. I forget what that robot was called. I tried a couple times and my damage was so low that I figured I'd just wait. There's a lot you can upgrade and get without progressing on bosses, so I figure I'll upgrade as much as I can before doing boss stuff.

I just reached that one tonight and hooboy, thats a doozy. Gonna leave that alone for now and head to quarry.

Spoiler:

The librarian

seemed managable but i think id rather have some upgrades before tackling it again.

Still havent figured out the coins. I know you are supposed to

Spoiler:

toss them down the wells

but i dont know what happens.

Also, the little

Spoiler:

square cards

are still a mystery to me. They dont seem to make a difference when i equip them.

Spoiler:

Oh, from the manual, you find that tossing coins allows you to equip more cards. Toss them in any well. Cards to have buffs and there is a page that sorta explains some. I currently have a fun one that makes enemies you defeat drop health sometimes.

I did the first part of the quarry. Cool place.

Gonna need to experiment more with them. Love this game.
