Elden Ring Catch-all

Vaati posted a video called "Watch this before you play Elden Ring" but I'm trying to go in blind. I didn't watch his last one, and I'm afraid to watch this one. Can anyone comment on the type of spoilers contained within either video?

I don't think I even want to know about the different kinds of multiplayer interactions, believe it or not.

A great article over on the PS Blog has various Sony first party devs pick their favourite From Software boss fights ever. It's a great read.

I’m hoping the side quests in Elden Ring are more clear than in previous games. In other Souls games I’d never finish an NPC quest if I didn’t check a guide. Sometimes I luck into getting the steps in the right order because I search everywhere but in a bigger open world game I expect to miss a lot more things.

I didn’t watch the prior one but this one is just him speculating on lore based on item descriptions from stuff he found in the network test area. Given the nature of From’s storytelling I don’t think it’s all that spoilery, though the video itself also features footage he recorded in the network test area that shows some spell effects, items, npcs and enemies. It’s not really anything new and a lot of it is just variations on stuff from earlier Souls games but whether someone would consider it a spoiler or not is probably subjective.

Personally, I hope they don't go too far in the direction of spelling out quests, etc. I made peace with the need to look up quest info (as well as meta info, like weapon build stats), and somehow it never affected my enjoyment.

Watching lots of non-spoiler videos now.

I am sure everyone will have their own opinion but what should I start as (assuming I stink and this is my first Souls game - even thought I played an hour or two of most of the rest)

Avoid whatever class is closest to naked.

Spoilered for max caution, but just discusses the starting class info presented on the Elden Ring official website and in its Twitter account tweets:

Spoiler:

My votes would be:

1st: Confessor, assuming it starts with a heal spell. Decent melee gear + healing magic is always a solid, safe(r) start.
Runner Up: Samurai. Heavy melee with a longbow for softening up targets should be pretty friendly.
Brave/Interesting: Astrologer. Pure magic classes can usually nuke down early threats easily while they have the power available, but when they run out their starting weapons and armor are usually not much of a plan B.

Tagging thread because I have fallen down the persona and pokemon holes and won't get to this game for a while but want to keep an eye on it.

I don't know what the classes are yet, but I think aiming for a pure melee strength build is usually the safest for a first playthrough. Equip the biggest two-handed weapon you can find, or use a greatshield.

Magic/pyro/miracles can sometimes be OP, but that depends on fully understanding all the stats and being able to find the necessary spells and equipment - which is going to be difficult if you're playing blind on Day One. Just hit things with a tree instead.

I have to be a Dance Dad this weekend, so soonest I can fire this up is Sunday night

(To be clear, I am normally happy to serve, but it's bad timing!)

What system? It's been too long!

I feel ya. I have a pesky wedding to attend on Saturday that I had already RSVP'd to, so my gaming schedule for Elden Ring is the wee hours transitioning from Thursday to Friday, then sleep... Some... And back up to do more Elden Ring. Saturday, wedding. Sunday, back to Elden'ing dat Ring.

Good thing the wedding reception is Brazilian-themed and food will be served Rodizio style. All that meat should assuage my possible Elden Ring withdrawal.

I'll be on PC. I pretty much mostly stick to that and my Switch these days.

PC releases several hours before console for some reason - I assume they're doing a worldwide release time for PC.

But I just gotta be Xbox.

No cross platform multiplayer

Maybe one day we can all join in jolly cooperation.

I saw a reddit comment saying that Xbox users can can change their time zone to New Zealand in the settings and start the game as soon as it unlocks there if you have it preloaded. I don't think this will work on PS.

Edit:

I'd be scared to mess with my timezone.

Sorry not sorry for spamming this thread.

Since the difficulty vs. accessibility discussions are inevitably going to come back strong with Elden Ring, I thought this was a good read on the topic ahead of the game's release: Accessibility Isn't Easy: What 'Easy Mode' Debates Miss About Bringing Games to Everyone

Right there with ya. They've never failed to deliver; just gotta have some patience.

Awww that stinks. Hope to see more cross-platform multiplayer in the coming years!

I’ll be on PlayStation - anyone playing there should feel free to friend me up for coop!

Preordered and preloaded on Xbox. I was vacillating over platforms, then remembered I could get the game free on Xbox by trading in Microsoft Rewards points.

I am intrigued to see how the Souls formula translates to open world. The fact that you can explore far and wide and come back to difficult areas later is a great thing and means (presumably) that there will be less of a sense of progress being gated behind tough bosses that must be beaten before you can move on. Then again, one of things I found most compelling about Dark Souls (especially the first one) is the linearity of the levels and the feeling that you were always pushing forward and making progress, inch by inch, toward the next bonfire. Probably not going to get that same feeling in open world.

Elden Ring - Official Launch Trailer

GreenMan Gaming just sent an email that keys will be available tomorrow!

To ensure a consistent experience for all of our customers, keys will be distributed on Wednesday, February 23rd. You will be notified directly via email as soon as the key is available in your account. This will allow you a minimum of 24 hours to pre-load your game ahead of launch, or longer in some cases depending on your location.

Hooray!!

I haven't really looked at this game a lot because I had to stop playing DS3 because my heart was pounding so hard I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I fought bosses. For some reason it's only been DS3 that's done this to me. I haven't played blood borne (no playstation here), but this seems like a nice mix between dark souls (which I finished) and witcher 3. I think what I am really liking is that checkpoints before bosses are so close to them that even if I die repeatedly at them it's not that big of a deal. I am kinda excited about diving into it.

My most anticipated game of 2022. Dying Light 2 didn't live up to my expectations even though it was still good. Don't let me down Elden Ring!
