Elden Ring Catch-all

Finally got through it and it seems that the PS5 is the way to go - and if you run the PS4 version on the PS5 you get better frame rates!

Why? The video you linked isn't displaying.

They did a few of the Closed Beta test comparing the different console versions. PS5 can get a more steady framerate than Xbox Series, but Xbox Series technically has the better pixel-perfect look. Both struggle to maintain a steady framerate above 30fps in performance mode and barely hit 60. The PS4 version hits a stable 60fps most likely because it's not running the same higher resolutions that PS5 and Xbox Series is forced to. They didn't get to test and see if the Xbox One version has a similar upgrade on Series.

My big takeaway is that From really needs to work on optimizing their game engine since it struggles to hit 60fps even on current hardware, and there are far prettier games running impressive worlds keeping a steady 60fps on the same hardware, but either way the trade-off between PS5 and Xbox Series versions are minor. PS4 Pro seems to run a bit better than Xbox One X as well, though again, minor trade-offs. The base Xbox One is the version you want to avoid though. That one runs horribly.

Fixed

I’d wait for release comparisons if you are looking for that very best version on console. Going of the network test might not tell the entire story…as well the PC version just by sheer horse power will look and preform the best.

I picked PS4 for DS3 for these reasons and then they released the Xbox One X, but I'm still occasionally returning to PS4 because that's where my "good" save is, even though I double dipped on Xbox once the One X came out.

All this to say, if performance is similar, I'd go with whatever console you prefer to play on.

Elden Ring will have much easier boss run backs

“While it’s not all bosses, it’s certainly the case that we were more mindful of this distance between the Sites of Grace and the Stakes of Marika in each boss fight,” said Kitao. “We wanted to reduce the stress of repeating the trek to the boss room, and we feel like with a much more expansive world in Elden Ring, this would definitely result in stress if we were to have a long run back to the boss every single time. The Stakes of Marika in particular, are placed strategically in order for us to alleviate that stress when exploring in the open and to encourage exploration.”

“Having the checkpoints just before the boss also lets players tune their builds and tune their characters a little bit, or level up a little bit in order to try a different strategy before facing the boss again,” added Kitao.

There are a lot of final previews that went up today based on 6 or 7 hours with the full game. I'm holding steady on my media blackout until launch, but I've seen several comments saying Vaati's video is great at conveying information without spoilers, so here it is for those interested:

Edit: I also read that the Easy Allies video Farley posted above is not good about avoiding spoilers, so viewer beware.

I appreciate everyone posting videos, but other than the original trailer that was released, I've been avoiding absolutely everything - and I intend to stay that way until after I get my hands on it.

I'll vouch for that. I listened to it and there was nothing of the lore or anything too specifically said. At least, nothing beyond what's already been seen in previews from weeks/months past.

Yeah I’ve managed to avoid knowing much at all. I’ve seen a few images but otherwise I know very little.

Same here. I've popped into discussions only rarely to see if the general sentiment remains good.

But really, who am I kidding. I'll buy and play anything Miyazaki and his team release.

I can also vouch for Vaati's Vidya, in particular that he wanted to avoid discussing anything outside the Beta Test zone. He made some comments about how the final build lined up, but he wanted to make sure any other content was left a surprise.

Just two-ish weeks to go everyone.

Starting class info and PC requirements are both out there.

Extremely light spoilers below featuring a class name and two details about stats and a returning mechanic from previous games.

Spoiler:

Personally, I'm planning to start as a Vagabond, because they are currently considered to have the fewest "wasted" points, and I'll eventually re-spec (rumor says that's a thing) and it will KILL me to have wasted points in a build, because I'm an incorrigible min-maxer at times.

Sounds like my kinda video. Thanks all those who recommended it.

Mainly I’m trying to avoid hearing too much about bosses just because I love the ‘What the @&#£ is that thing!’ moment of the boss reveal (Push Square had an article recently that was just ‘One of the bosses is a xxxxxx here’s a picture!’ Gee thanks guys. Really helpful.)

You can preload on Xbox now, and I am.

Barely more than a week to go.

Between this and Warhammer 3, I'm about as uncontrollably excited as that adorable little munchkin myself.

I assume upon release people will start posting about their experiences here, so I'll probably disappear to keep myself in the dark.

Man! It's been almost six years since we got a new Souls game (I don't count the single-player Sekiro, nor does Miyazaki). Long time. You can fit the releases of Dark Souls 1-3 and Bloodborne in that time frame. Add one more year and you can fit in Demon's Souls as well, so this has been every bit as long a drought as it has felt.

If you buy on Xbox use the official Xbox rewards app on your console to get 6000 points for your purchase. There’s an Elden Ring specific reward card right now. That 6000 points can be redeemed for ~$6 for future purchases.

I redeemed $50 worth of reward points to make the purchase then got the ~$6 back.

It’s not quite as nice as some of the PC deals I saw for preordering but I’ll take it.

Done, thanks!

Anyone know when reviews go up?

Love to commit myself to this game. Any chance it is going to be any easier than the other souls games?

It's not going to be easier from a pure difficulty perspective, but it sounds they're expecting more people to progress further and finish it than before because of all the new options available. My comment from earlier in the thread has the director's answer to this question.

Pardon my ignorance, but with the online/multiplayer element for the game, can you play with a chosen friend or is it a random online player kind of thing?

You can play with friends in these games - they tend to have an option to use a password so it’s easy enough to get a group together (and also a blast.)

Assuming the info from the network test on this is correct (I wasn't in it myself and only read this elsewhere) and hasn't changed by release (mechanics of summoning and passwords only, but still spoilered out of max caution):

Spoiler:

There are two passwords this time around: a private password that causes you to only be summoned or summonable by others with the same private password, and a group password that causes summon signs, bloodstains, and messages of other people with the same group password to show up higher priority and differently than normal (a little runic ring appears around them) but without completely blocking those from folks with a different or no group password.

In essence, private passwords are for short term "I want to play with just these specific 1-3 people right now" and group passwords are for longer term "I am part of this larger community and want to be able to identify/be identified by other members of it when they're around but still play with others too."

That's an awesome change!

I have managed to snag a PS5 just in time for this. I can’t wait Demons and Dark Souls are amongst my favourite games ever. Luckily I’m almost totally dark on it too.
