Horror movies and TV series

I’ve only ever seen bits and pieces of the Silent Hill movie. I’ve never played a Silent Hill game. I feel like they are too old and clunky to enjoy now.

I watched The Night House. It has an admirably different feel from most movies of that ilk and is doing different things but it wasn’t entirely sucessful.

Finished season 2 of Castle Rock. It was very good. Glad I’ve seen it. I have no desire to go back to season 1.

I really liked both The Night House and Silent Hill, which I haven't seen in a while. Also, I'm glad you enjoyed the second season of Castle Rock. A lot more enjoyable than the first one for sure!

Watched Last House on The Left 1972 and didn't care for it. Two ladies run into four killers that just escaped prison. The killers rape and kill the ladies. The killers then go to one of girl's parents house and things happen. Parents vs Killers.

So there were some moments that were suppose to be funny I guess. The funny scenes just felt out of place. One of the scenes was kind of racist also. Ha ha black lady with no teeth what a knee slapper. The music was just weird. They had this happy go lucky wacky sack music going on.

Was there some good points. I liked when the little fella got taken out. The texas chainsaw scene was pretty good.

Then I learned what happen to the actress during and after the film that kind of made me like it less. Now that I think about it I have to call this almost complete trash.

I watched The US remake of The Ring recently. It was very interesting to see how the story was changed. It didn’t have the same impact as the original but I couldn’t really have expected it to. A lot of the enjoyment/fear came from not knowing what you were dealing with as the protagonists desperately tried to find clues to the origins of the tape and the images on it.

Interestingly the script in the remake seemed very tight and came up with answers and explanations for the smallest things. Ultimately I think it was to it’s detriment. I liked that, by the end of the original, you still didn’t have all the answers and the past was still a murky and nightmarish place (It could be that the original was much more forthcoming with explanations and I’m just not remembering it. It’s a while ago.) It was worth a watch anyway.

I also watched MOTHER/ANDROID on Netflix. Bewilderingly unheplful and irrelevant title aside, it is possibly my favourite original Netflix film of the moment. It’s basically zombies, only they’re androids and an end of the world scenario. With drama on a human scale. It doesn’t, likely out of necessity, build to a crescendo of large scale cgi and special effects and is all the more effective for that. Not sure it’s strictly a horror film despite having horror elements but I do recommend it.

I've seen that movie exactly once like 15 or so years ago. The goofy song that introduces the bad guys still randomly pops into my head from time to time.

It is a really trashy movie but it's somehow responsible for probably the two most famous horror franchises. It launched Wes Craven's career leading to the Nightmare on Elm St series and the producer directed Friday the 13th.

Yeah I didn't care for that one either. Back at one of my first jobs had a buddy who was big in to horror films. He was like 20 years older than me so grew up with the 60-70s horror films. So recommended a lot of those I might have missed. I hadn't seen this one at the time and he was basically saying its a must see. It was considered a cult classic even in the 90s but did not do anything for me - not big on the rape and revenge ones.

This is probably my favorite remake. I found it generally scary with some great acting, and thought the story unfolded a lot better than the Japanese original. The movie is only pg-13 and generally surprised what they were able to get away with.

The sequel is not so great. It's been awhile since I've seen it.

This one is on Hulu here in the states. I thought it started out well but then got kinda crappy. The main character was really a jackass to the father of the child. He was doing all he could to be a father and she was just so cold towards him.

I did want to know more about what was going on in the world with the android rebellion. They really only give you little bits and pieces of that. So in the end wanted a bit larger scale movie.

It was watchable but I think I'd still give it a moderate thumbs down if I had to choose.

Binged Archive 81 on netflix the other week. Pretty good! Monster was a bit...eldritch horror slenderman...but the rest was a very cool cosmic horror / secret cult / weird time anomaly mystery. Ends on a cliffhanger of sorts, with no word of another season yet though.

I’m up to the finale, also enjoyed it a lot. Didn’t really need almost a whole episode devoted to historical events, I thought that could have been better summarized through the main characters own discoveries. So it lost a bit of momentum in ep 7.

Started watching ‘All of Us Are Dead’ which is a new Korean series on Netflix. The characters are well realised. There are some very dark and disturbing scenes of bullying in the first episode.

The second episode has possibly the best ‘try to stay alive whilst everyone around you is being attacked’ sequence I’ve ever seen. Also the point, that happens in every zombie movie, where the survivors have to face the fact that they are dealing with zombies is beautifully handled with the line:

Spoiler:

“Guys. It’s Train to Busan.”

Dang. Saw the trailer for this a few days ago and it did look good. Then, yesterday, read your post about it and managed to hold myself back from subbing up again to Netflix during my lunch break. But gave in this morning. Watched the first episode and its very good.

Will hold off until tonight when its dark to start watching the other episodes. Looks like it's going to be a fun, and well crafted show.

Another round of kudos for All of Us Are Dead.

edit* While it was great, I do regret binging it. 12 episodes in a row can leave you really depressed. I wish I'd spread it out a little.

It is very intense. I think I’ll try to space the episodes out. I’m at the end of episode 3.

Watched Come True on shudder - REALLY liked it with the exception of the last, like, minute, which is EXTREMELY clunky and just plain doesn't work. That aside though, you could cut it's atmosphere with a knife and the soundtrack is *chefs kiss* so i still recommend it.

It does include a scene with an older (I guess mid 20's?) scientist sleeping with a vulnerable eighteen year old, so...that's something folks might want to know up front.

Watched Night of the Living Dead 1990 Remaster and really liked it. Baby Candyman was good. New short hair Barbara was good and easy on the eyes. The changes to the ending were cool. I was shocked by the ending yet it still had the same feel as the original movie.

I would give this five candymans out of five but wouldn't say it a mirror. That dude has a thing for shorted haired white women.

If you have HBO Max you need to check out A Thousand Fangs, the channel's first Columbian production.

The story revolves around a special forces team who are choppered deep into the jungle to find and kill man. This mission, however, quickly goes off the rails and the team finds themselves fighting for their lives against something in (and under) the jungle.

The show is hard to describe, but I'd say it's as if the shows creator put the scripts of Predator, The Descent, Aliens, Apocalypto, X-Files, The Lost City of Z, the early seasons of Lost, and Apocalypse Now into a blender, added some eldritch horror, and got a pretty fantastic and unique series with the relentless pacing and ratcheting up of tension of Uncut Gems.

The acting is great and the jungle (as well as other settings) really helps sell the terror and confusion. It's a tight seven episodes and you'll know if you're in for the ride or not after the first one.

Yeah I recall liking the remake quite a bit as well. Been awhile since I've seen it. What service was that on?

I had somewhat recently watched Return of the Living Dead 3, the Uncut version. Guess there were a bunch of gore effects and what not cut out of the original version. Been forever since I've seen that one too so I wouldn't be able to pick out what was new.

I recalled it being both awful and not awful. On re-watching it was actually kinda fun. Not scary at all but pretty goofy and a stomach churning with the self mutilation. But for a small budget B-movie they really maximized what they could do with scope and special effects. So by the end I guess I actually liked it. Could wait another 30 years to see it again but I liked it.

Just caught up on this thread. Love a horror film/show, so does my dad. What we've been watching has always been something we chat about every time we catch up. It's like...

"Family, family, health, news, horror horror, horror, see you soon, bye"

Last time we spoke he was wholeheartedly recommending All of us are Dead and telling me about The Quiet Place sequel, and I bounced back with my viewing opening few episodes of both Squid Game and Kingdom.

It's that subject we can always fall back on when family news is slow in a good way.

Also it's been a while but yeah... Critters beats Ghoulies!

(If 30+ year old memories are solid)

.

My friend Black Beard loaned it to me.

Also just watched Wrong Turn 2021 and this wasn't the movie I thought it was. Apparently there this is a remake of a 2003 movie and there are 6 other movies in the series. Six!

Anyway I liked the movie but there were some dumb moments.

Spoiler:

At one point all their phones are stolen. It is never explained how this was done. Also this breaks a plot point of the film. The bad guys weren't really trying to kill them at first. Well if that is true why did they steal their phones?

A tree trap is setoff and instead of running sideways they run straight to try to outrun the rolling tree.

One friend has his eyes burnt out. He is still alive but instead of trying to save him they shoot him in his head because they think he is better off dead.

I think the good outweighed the bad. I thought they would cut away from all the violence but they only do that for a few kills. The twist was cool and the ending was cool.

I remember the original being ok, especially by the standards of sh*tty early aughts horror movies.

That’s brilliant Bubblefuzz. It’s great to have my mate Karen to share horror movies with. Her family, including her kids, are completely bewildered by her taste for horror movies.

Recently we watched It Follows which was much more tense than the first time I watched it and HOST. There are a few Host/Hosts movies. This is the zoom call seance movie filmed during covid. It’s superb. I don’t believe in ghost or demons so once that kind of movie is over I’m fine but Karen is religious and they do seem to freak her out a bit. She still loves them.

Those are a couple of my favorites from the past few years. I have heard from some that It Follows did nothing for them, but to me it was incredibly effective and creepy.

This movie sounds interesting. I’ll have to track it down.

Ha ha I just watched Hellbender on shudder. It is one of those movies you might not want to know anything about before watching. However, from the go it is clear the movie deals with witches. I liked the movie, it rocks.

Oh fantastic. Great to hear.

Watched the new Scream (2022) movie (Paramount). Was pretty good. Been awhile since I've seen the others but can say this one is likely the best one since the original. Some very brutal moments in the film. They didn't hold back on the violence and particularly the stabbing. As usual the franchise self-awareness is key. There's some funny moments where they're basically mocking the movie your watching. It had a stratifying ending.

So I give the movie 4 stabs.

Also watched Sadako vs. Kayako (Shudder). This is the Japanese version of Freddy vs Jason. Except you have The Ringu series spirit vs The Curse series spirit. I may have just been in the right mood but I enjoyed it up until near the end. They introduced two characters that exorcise demons. Both characters look and behave like they were pulled from some Anime series I'm not familiar with. Way over the top and didn't fit what I was watching.

So I give it 2 1/2 days to die.

And watched Noroi: The Curse (Shudder). Which is another Japanese horror film with spirits. This one a guy that researches paranormal activity stumbles upon a bunch of cases that look separate incidents but turn out to be connected. It kept me interested but like Sadako vs Kayako has a character in it that doesn't fit at all. There's a crazy guy who is an "expert" on paranormal activity that is just over the top awful. He's stereotypical crazy where he wears a tinfoil hat and has his house covered in tinfoil. He can barely get words out and screams a lot. Just annoying. And I'm not exactly sure what transpired at the end of the movie. It seemed like they tried to wrap it up in the final 2 minutes where a bunch of stuff happened all at once. So I wasn't even clear on what happened. The credits started to roll and I was just left dumbfounded.

I can't recommend it. 1 tin foil hat.

Watched Maniac Cop 3 which was terrible. First two movies are good to watch.

The Maid is 2020 Thai horror movie. Starts as a standard haunted house flick but takes a sharp left turn in the back third of the movie. I enjoyed it.

I keep hearing about that one. Might have to give it a go.
