Playstation 5 Catch-All

Looks like PlayStation has released a Similar "Wrapped" feature. There's a blog here about it, and you can visit it here.

Snagged a PS5 on Target.com this morning thanks to NowInStock.net!

Awesome, congrats.

And Astrobot's Playroom (the pack-in) is one of the best games you can play on it right now.

You now have the best PS4 ever. The PRO Plus.

Notification went out 20 minutes before my alarm went off. Still tried but no luck.

I hit the Checkout button at least 50 times before it went through. I got a bunch of "High demand item, please keep trying" and "This item is sold out in your area" responses and was about to give up when it finally went through. I guess maybe someone had it in their cart locally but let it time out?

Hmm. Good to know. I was trying for a bit. Maybe should have held on a bit longer, but started working. Stupid work.

My advice for anyone who just gets one is to google any PS4 games to see what "PS4 Pro" setting is best for the PS5 because the descriptions on the game usually haven't been updated so hard to tell what is better. For instance, some games say stuff like "Performance - 60FPS; Quality - Higher Res and Improved Visuals" but the framerate has been unlocked and the PS5 is so powerful that Quality runs at 60 anyways.

I finally found the perfect use for the Playstation OS's activity cards - puzzle games! I just finished Manifold Garden, which was mindblowing in every sense, and mindbending and occasionally mindbreaking during the course of the 12 hours it took to play it. On occasion I needed to consult a walkthrough, and in almost every case all I needed to do was hit the PS logo button, and the current activity card would have a video showing just the section I was currently doing, and I could watch for maybe a minute or two until it showed me the one thing I'd missed for the last twenty minutes or so. At which point I could bop back into the game and get back into the puzzle-solving flow.

The PS5 version of Manifold Garden also does some nice subtle things with the DualSense. It's a very...austere, I guess is the word for it, game, with a limited set of interactions and a tremendous amount of navigating gigantic spaces by walking, running, and falling (you control gravity, similar to Gravity Rush). I noticed that I could tell whether I was running up or down stairs simply by feel - going down has just the right pell-mell breakneck just-stopping-yourself-from-falling feel. And not only can you tell the difference between walking on glass and walking on...not-glass, maybe it's concrete, but if you "fall" 500 feet and land on an unbreakable glass window it has exactly the kind of terrifying resonant sound and feel that it should.

I picked Manifold Garden up on the most recent sale for 50% off, but I had such a great time playing it I kind of wish I'd given the developer full price. If you like mindbending puzzle games in the vein of Portal, The Witness, and Antichamber, I highly recommend it!

Another game I played did that. Bugsnax maybe? Had activity cards that showed you little clips what to do. Was pretty handy.

I don't think Bugsnax has them, but I do know Sackboy: A Big Adventure definitely does - that was the game Sony used to showcase this feature.

I actually sent the developer a thank you note, mentioning that I found the activity card implementation really useful when I got completely stumped. A lot of these platform-specific features tend to be pretty quickly abandoned after launch, so it was great to see a small third-party developer take advantage of them in a way that really enhanced the experience.

Maquette did it as well. It was really helpful in that game. Also Manifold Garden is incredible, absolutely worth the asking price as Evan says!

For those who were wondering, I’ve received a confirmation of my registration for a chance to buy a PS5 direct from Sony. Now it’s a waiting game. Horizon FW’s visuals in the latest impressions videos are selling me on moving to next gen.

Good luck, Higgledy

I also received a confirmation this week. I can't even remember when I registered! I suspect it was in November last year!

Thanks! I suspect Sony are particularly well motivated at the moment to communicate with folks who registered and remind them they are trying to get a PS5 into their hands.

Got the upgrade for the PS4 Uncharteds on the store this morning. I just played through them last year shortly after getting my PS5 but I figure I will probably do so again in a few years.

I own but never played Lost Legacy so I’m planning to grab the upgrade for that.

Damn. I had my disc version of Uncharted 4 in the pile of stuff to sell, thinking I could just play the digital PS+ version if I wanted to go back to it. But $10 upgrade doesn't work for that version.

Since I never picked up Lost Legacy I guess it makes sense to keep the disc and pay $10 for that.

Or you could just hold off until the inevitable discount if you want to keep it all digital. The remastered collection of the first 3 has been on sale for about $10 a dozen times. Can't imagine what is basically a re-release of two 5+ year old PS4 games will stay full price for long.

This sounds like me. I paid for the upgrade also and am looking forward to jumping back into that world when I have a second. So fun.

I bought the £10 upgrade last night & it feels utterly great to play Uncharted 4 at 60 fps. I'm just at the prison section (chapter 3).

I still need to find a sweet spot with the aim assist (it's at 6 currently) as it still feels a bit finicky to aim. Even still the instant transition of pulling your gun up to aim & the response to hitting the R2 button pop off shots is a night/day difference.

I always held off playing through the campaign again in the hope of a PS5 upgrade. I still think it's a bit sh*tty to charge £10 for what is essentially a resolution & frame rate bump, with slightly better draw distances & taking advantage of the dual sense.

The only game that would benefit more from a 60fps upgrade would be RDR2, come on Rockstar, get on it. The delay from when you pressed the trigger button to when Arthur actually fired his weapon (on PS4 Pro) was absolutely painful. I'd actually love a full PS3 to PS4, GTA V style upgrade for that game.

I don’t know… I think 10 is a decent price, especially since you get both games as long as you own one of them. Even if you already bought both I figure they need to make back the investment for the additional work somehow.

Have to respectfully disagree on the cost for the upgrade, especially since you get both games as long as you own one of them. The upgrade takes work and that has to cost something.

Yeah in that respect I totally agree 100%, I own both already so that's just from my own perspective.

You can also look at it from what other devs are doing with their upgrades to PS5/XSX. The current gen upgrades for The Witcher 3 & Cyberpunk 2077 will be far more extensive than Uncharted 4 & both of those are free. Still like you say if you own one you get the other free, that's a great deal.

Yeah, the 10 dollar price is kind of insidious; it's cheap enough that it's pretty hard not to fall for it even if you resent it (which is exactly what I did). At least with Ghost of Tsushima Suckerpunch did a fantastic job of issuing free PS5 updates to the PS4 version for quite some time before offering a PS5-native version at the $10 upgrade price.

Seems like most new games have been free with PS4 version, while older ones have cost $10. Most stuff that came out within a few months or right after PS5 launch. Immortals Fenyx Rising, NIOH 2, Marvel Avengers, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, etc. all free.

The exceptions being God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn, which both just got PS5 patches out of the blue for 3-4 year old games. But both of those also have sequels due out in the next year. So incentive for a free patch is there to get people to buy the sequel. And both of those were free even with the PS+ versions.

And of course things like Demon's Souls, from 2 generations ago. There was no cheap upgrade option for PS3 owners. Probably why I still haven't bought it.

I think it also depends on the type of update. God of War and Horizon were free, but they also were basically just the framerate cap removed from the PS4 Pro version. The Uncharted games are actual ports, utilizing the SSD, controller, and providing a higher resolution of the PS5.

I go the other way and would be willing to pay $10 for certain PS4 titles to get at least a bit of an update.

Plague Tale Innocence also added Dualsense features for free.

^ Got me to play the game a second time! (and then quit at the last boss fight, which I somehow managed to scrape through the first time)
