Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

I didn't mean WTF in a bad way... it just didn't look at all like the other Kirby games I've seen.

Gotcha. I was weirded out by that first trailer too, but not really in a good way. This new one has me excited though. It's looking good.

13 minute gameplay preview for Arceus:

If you're a fan of Ryan North (fantastic writer), you may be interested in To Be Or Not To Be (based on his Choose Your Own Adventure-style book of the same name). For $6.99, I'll fast track it.

SMTV is already on sale. Hmmmm

Now that they're showing actual gameplay, we have a better feel for what this game is going to be. I'm actually really interested to see if the Strong/Agile system will find it's way to the mainline games. That could be the sort of battle system shakeup that the games need. It's sort of reminiscent of the Bravely Default games, although definitely like a quarter step in that direction.

I'm still probably waiting for reviews first, though.

At 293 pages, I am a filthy skimmer. Apologies if I'm about to ask questions whose answers have been answered many times previously. Feel free to "go check page nnn" on me.

With the PS5 still being elusive and a bunch of Amazon points burning a hole in my computer screen, I bought a Switch OLED last night. Ah, the joys of Amazoning while drunk...

Along with the Switch I'm getting a Pro controller, a 256Gb microSDXC memory card and a tempered glass screen protector. Any other "must get" accessories?

Is it better to buy games on a SD card or download?

As for games, I'm thinking:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Tetris Effect: Connected
Hades (played it on PC but I think the form factor is better suited for the switch)
Fez
SteamWorld Heist
Kentucky Route Zero

and maybe a metrovania style game, but there are so many to choose from. The ones that look interesting are:

Ori,
Hollow Knight
Dead Cells

So, give me your wisdom Collective Hive Mind!

If your household will ever have a second Switch then physical is the way to go.

If you play a lot of handheld, digital is the way to go. It's a preference, either way.

Some games, like Hades, definitely buy digital, because it's cheaper. Limited print things get much more expensive physical copies.

I believe Ori and Dead Cells are on sale for a few more days. Check Deku Deals to find best prices and all-time sale prices to decide if you want something now.

I would recommend the Fixture S1. But I'm not sure there's an OLED version yet. It's the only way I play handheld anymore. Joycons suck. Pro controller is better.

Hollow Knight is my favorite of those, but all three of them are great games.

A couple considerations:
Dead Cells shares similarities with Metroidvanias, but it is a roguelite, while HK and Ori have more traditional Metroidvania structures.

If you want something fast and digestible, Ori is the way to go. It's 10-12 hours to mainline, plus another 5ish for side content. Meanwhile, HK is 25-30 hours to mainline, plus 20-30 hours of optional content. It's massive. Since Dead Cells is a roguelite, it could take you anywhere from 8-80 hours.

All of the above advice is good. On the Metroidvania front there’s also Metroid itself, which is awesome.

There are too many great games to recommend. I personally have really enjoyed finally playing a bunch of 3D Mario games portably. Above all else, though, definitely give time to Breath of the Wild.

Digital is more convenient, but physical is often cheaper and you can resell them.

For accessories the Satisfye grip is good, much more comfortable if you use handheld mode a lot. They have a case as well that fits the Switch with the grip for throwing it in a bag. Make sure you get the newest one that works with the OLED.

I used to use Satisfy grip (kickstartered it) but eventually moved on to using HORI Split Pad Pro. Much better for me. I play handheld but never outside my house so having it fit a travel case or a pocket was not a bigger priority than having full size controls. Not sure it there are better alternatives these days.

I did like the split pad pro, but my shoulder button broke after only 3-4 months. So then I switched to Fixture.

+1 for the Fixture if you have a pro controller.

Worth reiterating that current Fixture S1 does not support the OLED model.

This is super important. As a long time PC player, I was surprised by the price of full Nintendo games and with my kids’ attention span, I very quickly went for physical so I could trade them in when they ultimately lost interest.

How and where do you all resell cartridges?

Usually here, Ars Technica, or Amazon.

Anyone with an OLED switch, I’m trying to see if I’m having a bug/issue or what—with the built-in bluetooth audio on my original switch, my headphones would automatically connect when both were on, but the same headset on my OLED switch and I have to manually reconnect every time in the settings. I even tried a different headphones pair and had the same issue and even confirmed it by pairing that set to the original switch again.

Is it an OLED issue generally, or do I just potentially have a bug/bad device? I just haven’t been able to find anything about this kind of issue online.

I also swear it wasn’t the case before—I accidentally left my headphones at work and was connecting a new pair for the weekend.

Never mind—finally got it working after following a troubleshooting guide for a different issue and powering off -before- forgetting the connection and the powering off -again- after forgetting. And only then pairing the headphones. Weird. Almost don’t want to go through the hassle to switch back to my original pair.

Amazon and local fame store for me.

Do they remember your name?

Is there any way to easily use more than 2 joycons? Our Switch doesn't get regular use, I mostly game on my PC. But our girls like to occasionally play some Just Dance 2022, and every time it's a real hassle to connect a 3rd or 4th Joycon to the Switch. Well it feels like a hassle at least as my 2 ladies are not especially patient while daddy fumbles to get everything working

Yesterday I had to click the 2 unused Joycons to the Switch while it was in the docking station to get them to connect again, and then remove them so we could play together. I'm curious whether there's an easier way to get them to connect.

The battery also runs low fairly quickly, maybe I should get some charging station to keep them full as only 2 Joycons can stick to the Switch itself for charging of course.

I have a charging station I can plug multiple JoyCons into to charge at the same time. I don’t think there’s anyway around the - attach them to the side of the Switch and then remove them - dance, though. The dock we have looks something like this. I don’t remember the brand.

Thanks DS, I ordered a similar charging station that got some good reviews on a local webshop I had some coupons for.

If the attach/de-attach dance is what it takes, so be it. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Nintendo has such a weird tradition of mixing super user friendly hardware with annoying and avoidable stuff like this.

The controller menu right there bottom of the home screen is the other option (screenshots in this article). I usually find it annoying because it disconnects controllers you already have connected and you have to readd everything. But probably easier than sliding multiple joycons on and off.

The switch came yesterday evening. Plugged in, signed up, and games loaded just in time for dinner.

Loaded up Fez and Breath of the Wild. I didn't get much past the opening scenes in either - got 4 of the first 8 cubes in Fez and got a stick in Zelda.

Thoughts:

I like the screen and form-factor much better than my PSP. That the range games available is so much better also helps.

Looks like my main use will be while hanging out with Mrs Moggy. I'll play the Switch while she watches her shows and sews. So handheld. Using the Joycons in the mode is fine, but boy would I like a Fixture S1 for my oled. I hope they (or someone) will come out with something. A secondary use will be docked into my PC monitor, so the Pro controller should get some use.

That’s a fun way to play it. I use it around 90% if the time in handheld mode. To such an extent that eventually I purchased a Lite and now my original Switch sits docked all the time.

I have a dock that I can charge four joycons and two pro controller that I like. I will try to dig up the Amazon line later when I have a minute.

Is there anyone in the UK that wants to try Metroid Dread? I've got the cartridge, have long since completed it & I know Nintendo games rarely ever come down in price so here's your chance Goodjers.

Definitely interested. I’m in Cambridge until noon Friday, in a hotel near London-Heathrow Friday evening, and fly back to the US Saturday morn. I should be back to the UK sometime around the end of February or early March as I accepted a job offer in Lincoln. Let me know if any of that would work for you.
