Coronavirus Tales

My sister in law's sister in law now has it and surprise, not vaxxed. The kicker is, my sister in law and brother in law are livid because they are both essential workers and have a 2 year old that she has helped watch and spent lots of time at their house on play dates with her and their kids.

They did not know she wasn't vaxxed and as mentioned are completely beside themselves.

Got my booster yesterday. I woke up this morning with muscle aches all over my whole body. I figured it would go away pretty quickly - it did not. At all. I'm still aching now, something around 36 hours later. I wasn't sure if the sweats I was having was due to the vaccine or just because it's too damn hot here. I think it was confirmed as the vaccine when my eldest said "Dada! Why is your back so wet?!"

Imagine how bad the real deal would be?! I'd rather not!

I had AZ for the first two, then Pfizer for the booster, for anyone interested. Funnily enough, the other people in my office who are in the same position had no side effects at all! I guess I'm one of those minority figures.

Just tell yourself that it's clear your immune system is working and you're getting good protection from the booster.

That's what I told myself after my initial shot flattened me for three days. I had a good immune response and I'm super protected now.

So please take care of yourselves GWJers!

My wife's cousin also has a 2 year old and her partner and baby daddy has tested positive and he isn't vaccinated. (she works for Wallgreens among other things giving vaccines)

They were with my wife and her 85 yo grandma last Sunday. So my wife wants to get tested. I do too but I am under the impression that due to demand for tests, they are not recommending the asymptomatic get tested.

Former co-worker of my mom died a couple days ago. They worked together for 20 years. But she didn't get vaccinated, guess she watched too much Fox News.

I really did feel bad for everyone in 2020 and early 2021. But damn since like April you could just walk in and get a vaccine. I have no sympathy left for morons.

Apparently her daughter is expecting a second baby this month. Won't ever meet her. It's terribly sad yet so easily avoidable.

Daughter (5) got it from daycare.

She needs to quarantine through Saturday. What have you all done with a similar aged child that needs to be away from the rest of the family without resorting to just watching TV all day?

We go back to distance learning starting Wednesday due to staffing from so many people being sick.

My wife got her booster last week.

Today, I went with my 21yo and 18yo to get ours. We are all triple-Pfizer. My arm and shoulder are very unhappy with me right now, more than they were with shots #1 and #2 IIRC.

My daughter got an email from her university on Jan 1 saying that a booster would be required to return to camps for the spring semester.

I don't think you can really isolate a five year old for days, it just isn't possible at least with my five year old who always wants to be around people. Are you somewhere that you could spend time outside with her? TV for a couple of days isn't going to hurt her, will just take a day or two to adjust after. Activity books?

She is feeling better this am (so far) and sat quietly in her bed to drink fluids and read her princess book. She's watching a bit of TV now and I am going to take her for a walk around the neighborhood (we're in suburbia so we're not going to be around anyone else) later this morning since she seems up for it. She loves to color so I'll set her up w/some of that too.

Yeah unless he is bedridden there would be no way to isolate our 6 year old. He's a tornado.

So all anti-vax in my home province are alcoholics and pot heads?

That checks out.

Probably the last vestiges of the "couldn't be bothered" crowd who were never philosophically or politically against the vaccine, but thought the risk covid posed to them specifically was overblown and not worth actively seeking out the vaccine for.

My sister texted that she tested positive so she is on a vacation for awhile. She is a teacher so extra burden on the school but she is vaxxed so hopefully it will be mild.

Looks like my state is full force giving in to Omicron now—the governor just suspended all schoolwide “test to stay” events, and just “urging” parents to keep sick kids home and “relying” on them to make the best decisions for their family and community. All this alongside the state law passed last spring prohibiting school mask mandates of any kind.

I hate being an intrinsically caring person in a fundamentally uncaring community. It’s agonizing and so taxing. Every day is simply exhausting.

Aaaaaand, my wife just tested positive and is symptomatic despite being boosted and having Covid in October…

Probably only a matter of days for the kids and days after that for me to catch it. Welp, there goes my years and years of stockpiling sick days

Got my booster shot yesterday, feeling a bit woozy but okay. Our 6 year old is getting her first shot next Wednesday, my wife her booster next Thursday.

I get boosted tomorrow. Moderna style.

With the explosion of cases in Greece, even vaccinated students, teachers, and staff are being required to self-test three times per week. And yet...nobody checked my papers at my school on Tuesday, nor today. So, I guess just my family knows I tested. Pandemic fatigue is going to cause more cases here than anything...people just don't feel like being vigilant any more. At least unvaccinated people have to get a rapid test (which means the pharmacy opens the self-testing kit and uses it on them, and then signs a form that their result was negative. So "rapid test" means "no cheating self-test" in Greece. Same testing kit.) We have plentiful testing kits from China in Greece. Hope they work.

I've been a bit of a prick in my classroom. I told my students that if they don't have a properly fitted mask, there will be no warnings, they will be going to the school doctor to take care of that. And getting an absence. I seem to have 2-3 students in every class who just don't give a crap if their mask falls halfway off every minute or two. They have been warned. They are...just terrified enough of me. While yes, you need to be inspiring and supportive as a teacher, you also need to have SCARE THEM sh*tLESS in your bag of tools.

I say "(student name), mask!", every 2-3 minutes in a 1 hour lesson.

Wowza, yeah, Delta doesn't do much to stop symptomatic from Omicron, but Delta in October + boosted and still symptomatic? Wow.

How bad are her symptoms?

Bad enough to be in bed most of the time and off work this whole week, she’s been sick about 7 days now, but not bad enough for a doctor or hospital.

Got 2 calls from daughter's (9yo, 4th grade) school yesterday. First one was that she'd been a 'close contact' to someone who was last in class Monday and subsequently tested positive. Because of that positive test, any unvaccinated student was sent home and has to quarantine then test to come back. Vaccinated students are allowed to stay. Turns out half her damn class was unvaccinated, and one of those kids tested positive yesterday afternoon, necessitating the second call.

She's fine so far, but I cannot even describe how annoyed I am about so few of her classmates being vaccinated.

Wow, that's awful. Wonder if she picked up two viruses.

Anyway, stay well! That's clearly the most important thing here.

Of the two people I know who've caught omicron, one only felt bad for about 30 hours, and is waiting for their five days to be up. The other has been almost bedridden by it due to exhaustion and fatigue for the past 7 days. Both were fully vaccinated and boosted.

Only 17% of US kids under 12 vaxxed.

8 in 10 parents haven't gotten their kids vaxxed!!!

My wife's boss's family has had Covid all week. Father was double vaxxed (and probably boosted, but not sure) and was sick for two days.

Wife was negative all week until today and isn't very sick atm. Double vaxxed, also not sure on the booster front.

Less than year old baby was obviously unvaxxed and was SUPER snotty cold for days until he developed an ear infection. Five+ days in he's recovering now. Pretty much all resolving now.

11 yr old daughter (vaxxed) and 4 yr old son (unvaxxed) were so far negative.

Now Covid is sweeping through my 11 yr old friend's house.

I mean, we really shouldn't need any more evidence that it is nothing to trifle with.
I hope everything stays as mild as possible for you and yours and everyone around them Garion

It's almost funny. I couldn't believe that number since most of the parents I know have gotten their kids vax'd. Then I of course realized the others aren't announcing that they aren't.
